  1. *Insert ss2k5 making a joke about Burr shooting Hamilton to get called up first*

  4. Stupid. There was no rush to move Avilan and he's the type of pitcher who should get you a prospect more in the mold of Charlie Tilson.

  7. He’s playing against high schoolers. It really doesn’t matter. If he was any good he’d be in the states by now

  8. I wouldn't expect Shields going anywhere at this point. Garfien had a new Kopech podcast and said the Sox had Shields pick him up at the airport and show him the ropes around the stadium (including a game of catch) for 3 hours on Monday. The Sox also have Kopech's locker strategically in-between both Shields and Giolito. They clearly want Shields to be the go-to guy for advice. And before everyone jumps all over this with the "Shields sucks" posts - James Shields had an extremely successful pitching career. His time with the Sox may have been mediocre and disappointing, but he still has plenty of pitching knowledge that the younger guys can learn from. It's not the end of the world if he sticks through the rest of the season, and I honestly feel comfortable knowing the Sox have a guy that can eat up innings while the younger guys take their lumps and bruises as they all approach career highs in IP.

  9. I have no problem picking 6th if it means our pitchers and Moncada have all stepped up.

  10. yes, he has a daily notes feature that he'll write him up most likely

  12. Worth noting: Jake Peter has turned into Kodi Medeiros, Wilber Perez, and Felix Paulino. Just have to hope one of them becomes useful.

  13. You know I love him. Amazing that best hitter and pitcher in terms of performance this year for Sox were both in Q trade

  14. 10 game hitting streak for Bryce Bush.

  15. I saw an article by Fegan that said partly Burr (and Hamilton when he eventually gets here) will start pitching in non high leverage situations to start so probably won't see him till a game is like 8-1, 10-0, etc.

  16. Jesus! If anyone wants to talk about the Sox baseball IQ, this Twins team is AWFUL.

  17. I agree with this, but have to admit I was on the other side of the argument earlier. I though Ricky was good for this situation but after seeing all the bunting, bad managing, etc...I think it is time to get a real manager and Girardi would be perfect. Not so sure he would want to come or if the Sox even have that on their radar but I think Joe is one of the best out there and can’t believe he doesn’t have a job.

  18. Best thing that can happen for this kid now is to get lost in the Kopech hype and then get lost in the Eloy hype when it happens. Ricky installing him as the leadoff hitter was a mistake in hindsight, a big one. Kid's had a bullseye on his back all year and he's obviously not mature enough to handle it yet. That's something the manager, especially one annointed a "latin whisperer" should recognize IMO. It's the same BS we saw when Robin anointed Eaton. Stop crowning these guys in spring fucking training. The managers we've had in Chicago since Ozzie left have been absolute dog shit and it's not doing the players any favors. We need a fire and brimstone type imo. Girardi would be perfect for a guy like Yoan imo. Has the gravitas to make him work and not in a father figure role but as his boss and leader.

  19. I'd probably be ok with that. At this point, they're both interesting/good enough hitters to warrant another full season of ABs in my eyes. Delmonico could also spell Abreu at 1B on occasion, I suppose.

  22. I'm not against the move, but I am a little surprised that there was apparently such little interest in Avilan. He's a quality lefty reliever, with another full year of control, and guys like that tend to at least be in some demand.

  23. This. I don't know how anyone doesn't get it. Bummer, Fry, and Frare can all replicate or do better than Avilan for cheaper and obviously the Sox have more control over.

  24. There have been several, and I still really disagree with this. I'm not worried about needing roster spots for the Adam Engels and Hector Santiagos of the world. There are plenty of spots for the 8-9 players who will need protection.

  25. They saved $500k. While that sounds like a ton of money to me, it's basically nothing. They theoretically could have told the Phillies to pound sand if they didn't provide a better offer and then try to move Avilan in November before the Rule 5 deadline and maybe done a little better, perhaps find a more interesting guy that a team wasn't going to be able to protect. But you never know. The fact that Paulino is Rule 5 eligible and would need to be added anyway is a bit telling. Not a huge deal either way, but still a tad curious IMO.

  26. It's crazy how the slow drip allows folks to move the goal posts. I remember when the very idea that Russia was behind the hacking of dnc and podesta emails was sour grapes of dems. Now anything short of the president himself ordering the hacking is beside the point. I also remember when it was expected that the president not bring into the executive branch people that have committed crimes, and especially concerning when they were happening while in office. And when those activities benefited the president him/herself? It would be a very big deal! Now, again, unless the president personally took funds and put them in a burlap sack to pay off to another lawyer, it is apparently very tiresome for "the electorate" to have to hear about. I get that it can be tiresome to constantly have to deal with the steady stream misdeeds of the trump administration, from very minor to very severe. But the idea that pointing out the misdeeds is something more punishable than this onslaught of daily corruption is really a tough sell to me. It's probably an extension of the idea that the only punishment can happen through elections, and any criminal actions performed by government officials should just be decided by them being voted out or voted in.

  34. Seems like a pretty uninspiring return. With Avilan controlled next season, surprised we didn't see Hahn hold onto him in hopes of getting a better offer this winter. Paulino reads like he is minor league filler.

  35. Burr is rule 5 eligible this year.

  36. Hamilton doesn't need to be added to the 40 man until next season. Ie: we're unlikely to see him until next season, as the Sox will likely want as many 40 man spots as possible to protect guys from the rule 5.

  42. I've always believed that universal health care provides a basic health care package. It helps prevents the bankruptcy cases and over usage of emergency rooms, etc. But if you want better healthcare, lower deductibles, etc then you pay for a private or public plan that sits on top of your basic plan, like a tiered system or something.

  44. Was Madrigal the best player available? Try trading him for Gorman or Kelenic right now.

  45. Yep. Moncada is no longer the #1 2B prospect though. He has been leapfrogged by guys like Albies and Torres. Collins stock as a catcher is down from 2016 as well. The kid was an absolute reach at #10 overall if he can't stick at catcher. High OBP first baseman are a dime a dozen these days, especially ones with terrible splits. The Sox took another one of those in the second round last year.
