  1. When a thread starts with "Bruce Levine said," you know you're in for a ride.

  2. What a fresh take. I am interested in hearing more of your thoughts. What do you think of the Tatis/Shields trade? Was it a good deal for the Sox?

  8. I agree with you that it is way too early to pass judgment on Eloy for the obvious reasons. However, I think some Sox fans are not realistic when they think a prospect will come up to the major leagues and immediately become a star. There are two painful parts to a rebuild: It takes time, and you never know how long it will take for any young player to develop. This team is at least two more years before becoming a real contender.

  12. This was talked about earlier today, but at this point, there is no reason to not start to break it up and see what else is out there. I'm not sure why Mendick is not given a chance at this point. What is the point of keeping him down in AAA any longer? If he can't cut it, there is nothing hurt by playing him for the rest of the season. If he can, he is still 25 years old, maybe a late bloomer. Palka and Collins both should be here as opposed to Castillo and Alonso. It drives me nuts that the only people held accountable, in the entire organization (on-field and front office) are the young relief pitchers (and Ervin Santana).

  13. He didn’t miss because he’s too far off the plate. Come on. He missed because he got fooled and didn’t stay closed. And sure they change. Anderson made adjustments. So did Moncada. Other guys have too, but they just aren’t that good so it doesn’t really matter. You can’t tweak your stance and become more talented.

  15. Nerd/obsessed fan moment: I was friends with Adam Eaton on facebook. I posted a picture of a fish that I caught. He literally commented on it and asked me how big it was. I will always admire him for taking the time to do that. Made my day lol. And this happened like 2 years ago.

  16. Billy Pierce is also my all time favorite White Sox player. I got a chance to meet him in 1999 at the ball park. He was intelligent, witty and a gentleman in every way. After our meeting I almost floated back to my seat. I never saw a left handed pitcher with such perfect mechanics, the way he would rock back and get every ounce of leg and arm motion that his small frame would allow, maximum effort with minimum strain. I doubt that the White Sox ever had a player more beloved than Minnie Minoso. I remember as a kid buying a pack of baseball cards at the drug store in my neighborhood. As I turned the corner and looked over my new cards I noticed that Minnie Minoso was in the bunch. "I got Minnie Minoso!" I yelled loud enough for the whole neighborhood to hear. The way both players were treated by HOF voters was both a sham and a shame. Imagine pitchers like Harvey Haddix or Don Larsen getting more votes than Billy Pierce. Or Alvin Dark, Phil Cavaretta and Mickey Vernon out polling Minnie who was getting all of 1.8% of the vote in 1969. What a joke baseball HOF voting can be at times. If you are slavish in your devotion to WAR, SABER, Analytics and the whole new stats thing, as the vast majority of fans on sites like this seem to be then I would suggest taking a much closer look at more than just the raw numbers. Minnie accumulated his 50.5 WAR in just 6579 ABs. Billy Pierce was in the top ten for so many categories for many years. 5 times in the top 10 WAR for all players, 7 times for pitchers including twice at number 1. At or near the top in such stat geek loving categories as WPA and WPA/LI for many years. The lords of analytics were passing out WAR points stingily for 1950s players. If you love WAR you also need to look at how many years a player is in the top 5 or 10 percent of his peers. The stars of Billy and Minnie will shine much brighter if you do that. If Catfish Hunter is worthy of the HOF then dammit so is Billy. If Heinie Manush is enshrined then why not Minnie? I could give more examples but this is already too long.

  17. This is great news. Like most good Sox players, Stone gets taken for granted here. He's the best baseball color announcer in the game (name one better) and is one of the rare first class things about our organization. He probably could be a GM if he wanted to take that path earlier in his career. Stone is a blessing.

  21. There is no such rumor. Stone even tweeted the other day that he wants to be in Chicago for years @stevestone 10:57 AM - 13 May 19 via Twitter for iPad I am working with the best young broadcaster in sports. Jason has the innate ability to know when to speak for the game and when the game speaks for itself. I love this beautiful game and I love Chicago. I'll be here for awhile because I'm having a blast

  22. Before reading your post I wasn't sure which of Alonso or Castillo I wanted gone more, but your point here is really sound. Castillo does still serve a purpose as the C v Lefties. And if Collins were called up he very well could take away any unnecessary Castillo starts vs Righties if or when McCann needs a day off. Alonso definitely needs to go more than Castillo.

  23. This is so interesting to me. It seems like this might be the international path that so many want to see happen in basketball. If MLB players are getting paid very little for their best years, maybe some of the HS guys decide to forgo college and just go straight to Japan, make real money for 5 or 6 years, and then come over to MLB when they reach international free agency at 25. Or maybe they have an agreement to post him in a few years when he is still under the bonus pool rules but is closer to the majors so he doesn't have to spend as much time in the shitty living conditions of the minors while still getting the same amount of money he wanted from the draft.

  28. It won't be long before the Sox look like what Houston does now. Win 2 out of 3 games and be near impossible to beat at home. Wish we would get Robert, Collins, Madrigal and Cease up to big club asap. In the long run players will develop better and faster by playing against better players IMO.

  31. I think the Sale trade provides the most value, but we also gave up our best chip in the process. To me, the best trade right now is the Quintana trade but it’s entirely possible that Eaton deal looks like a complete steal in a couple years if Giolito keeps this up. Not to go negative here and derail the thread, but the returns of these trades make it that much more frustrating that we haven’t been able to supplement all these pieces via the draft. This rebuild would be looking pretty good if we were even semi competent with our drafting.

  36. What has gone the wrong way though? Is a marginal increase in K-rate over a 3 week span really that big of a deal? If you ask me, the biggest difference between April and May is that his BABIP dropped from .370 in April (slightly above career average) to .326 for May (slightly below career average). His overall numbers, as a result, seem like a decent indicator of what he'll be moving forward to me.

  37. So you want to play Palka, a 27 year old that's garbage, or rush some prospects that aren't ready? You need to field a team during a rebuild and part of that is playing garbage vets.

  42. It's like 6 at this point. It's pocket change in the grand scheme of things. The hold up is likely Hahn trying to save face in the next meeting with JR. Of course I'd imagine even at his age JR can read a slash line and ask his GM why Yonder is on the roster.

  46. Glad the poll is in their favor big time. I think they are amazing. I've said this before, but try to listen to other team's crews. Like the Royals. Except for the amazing Denny Mathews and the very good Ryan Lefevre, the Royals broadcast is one big commercial for the team. At least Bennetti and Stone don't go that way. They are cheerleaders of course, but it's not sickening. And they use their real voices, don't try to talk like stereotypical announcers.
