  1. I'm getting ads to buy a sofa...but that's because I've been searching online to buy a sofa.

  2. My goodness. This is almost as dumb as when Sox fans got enraged that they didnt protect Josh Phegley or that 2nd baseman the dodgers claimed who amounted to nothing - Jake Peter?

  4. Moncada wasn't the worst starting position player in baseball.

  6. Fuck it just sign Strasburg and Rendon and you're at around $130M payroll .Stick Moncada in RF , If that happens I care a lot less about balance in the lineup OBP or LH power. Go with Stras, Gio, Cease, Kopech, and Lopez in the rotation. Stick Collins at DH and find another cheap catcher like Avila or Castro. Save some money for 2021 which is going to be the real contention year anyway. Weather or not this should be in green i have no idea. Every thread it's the same conversations over and over and the season isn't even over yet. I think I've heard everyone's ideas and not a lot is going to change much until a week after the World Series ends when we find out who opts out and to a lesser extent on Dec.2nd when we find out who is non tendered, See y'all in 10 days or so.

  7. 29 year old Cole not 31 year old Cole.

  8. This is certainly correct if you think Machado is only a 3 win player going forward and that Moncada's breakout was the result of the position change. I, personally, don't think either is true, but I can't prove it either way so it isn't worth arguing. If Machado now projects as a 4-5 win player going forward instead of a 5-6 win player, and Moncada still takes the strides he takes to become a 4-5 win guy himself as a second basemen, I'd argue the team is in a much better position and still has room to add significant pieces without cracking into top payroll range. But the real problem I have is this: even IF Machado turns into a bust, there was no way to know that at the time. At the time, it represented one of the biggest opportunities in history to get safe, elite production for an entire competitive window. And the money was NOT spent then. Sure, it didn't go away, but I have to wonder now how much of it was ever really there in the first place. And whatever opportunities exist to spend it now are nearly always going to be lesser opportunities. Like, Cole now is the prize. But a 31-year old Cole is absolutely a worse buy than a 26-year old Machado was. The upside is similar but the floor is SO much lower. Injury could make him near replacement level at any moment. Every likes to shit on Machado's down year but it was still worth 3.5 wins. But, all that said: you're right. What I'm proposing is risky. I just think it's the only way this team, given its restraints, can every really get over the top. At least, without a tremendous amount of luck.

  9. I just don't understand the Moustakas thing. We have a 3B and 2B. He's played 4 games his entire career at first. There is no reason to pay 10+ million to a sub when we have Leury and probably Mendick to fill holes on rest days. If you want him for DH I'd much rather get JDM and trade for a LH RF and do the whole Grandal mish mash with Abreu/JDM/McCann/Collins/Grandal moving all over.

  10. This is a good post. Moustakas is a fine back up option / plan D for a year. You could do a lot worse. But he’s not a great fit as the primary DH.

  11. He and all of the players, coaches, and staff have been saying they expect big things next season and playoffs. The only folks doubting things are is fans. I will still believe it when I see it.

  12. If your criteria for free agent pitching is no Tommy John’s in their past you’ve just cut the list substantially. No idea why doing that makes any sense.

  14. I wonder if JR is ignoring this because he believes a draft will be in place sooner rather than later. As one of the league’s primary driving forces in colluding to drive player earnings down, he would certainly be in a position to know.

  15. You guys have to understand that when a team does this, it’s because they’re not making ends meet. “Should have stuck with” isn’t really a great option, because it wasn’t working. Granted, the name isn’t what made them fail in the first place, but short a new ballpark, there aren’t really any better ways to sell a bunch of new merchandise and get your brand to the forefront of the local news cycle for a while.

  16. No one is “relying” on Collins, but you need to give your players a chance to play if they’re ever going to contribute. If you aren’t willing to do that, then you shouldn’t rebuild. Unfortunately, if the Sox are going to continue to operate like a small market team, the window is going to be small. If you only have one or two shots, you better choose very wisely when to take them. This team has too many holes to warrant blowing “the money” on average role players that take opportunities away from prospects. This time next year, we’re still going to have Moncada/Giolito/Eloy/etc., but we’ll also have Robert/Madrigal/Vaughn either contributing or on the cusp of contributing. It’ll be a stronger base from which to build, and better place to take your one shot. 2022 might be even better. And that may be all we get. I don’t like that fact either, but it is what it is — so for chrissakes I hope they at least do it right.

  17. I’m sure there are tons of posts suggesting things I wouldn’t do, but I am not on the board as much as I used to be, so I miss them. I’ve seen moustakas pop up a lot, so I snagged that one. Yeah, generally, I think the Sox need to make their prospects into contributors instead of signing stopgaps, at this stage. Given what’s currently available in this year’s market, I think that means signing pitching and foregoing position players. If there were superstar position players available, I would likely feel different. A year or two from now, if they’ve failed and are seeing the core pieces on the cusp of free agency, they’ll have to decide whether or not to get more desperate with role players or tear it down again. But with 3 more years of moncada/giolito/etc., this isn’t the year to push all-in with guys like Moustakas.

  19. Not sure why you are already carving out AB’s for Vaughn though. You can only kick the can down the road for so long. We can worry about the potential problem of having too many hitters in 2020. And sure, getting TOR SP’s is obviously important. But what happens if/when that fails on free agency. The plan is do nothing and hope for the best with what we have in the lineup?

  21. 1. Context is important. Look past the homers. That’s why we use WAR. His defense is mediocre and his OBP is Leury Garcia bad. His ability to play multiple positions doesn’t help if you already have guys in those positions who are better. Dude isn’t gonna be happy as a multi-position backup to a bunch of rookies. If he would play DH for the White Sox, then he’s a DH for the White Sox. The thing he does best (hit homers) has literally never been easier to come by. This is reflected in his linear weights stats. 2. There’s literally no reason to use bWAR over fWAR for position players, unless you’re prepared to argue that DRS is a superior system to UZR. Fangraphs uses wRC+, which is objectively better than OPS+, even if they don’t differ much. In practice, people use bWAR when they want to make a player look better and it turns out that DRS favored the guy that year. 3. Even if he was worth 3 WAR this year, he’ll project around 2 WAR based on his career numbers and aging curve, and even less if he spends half his time at DH, and what he does going forward is the only thing matters to the White Sox.

  22. If you are in a dome or have a really good kicker, then maybe you can just kneel down and kick the field goal. I feel like the Bears had a chance to do something there and with the recent problems it might have been worth it get some yards. Straight up run, designed qb run, play action fake, try and take a shot. Even just a pass play and tell Trubisky if the read isn't there, throw it out of bounds.

  23. As an outsider looking in this franchise is a mess. Pace probably has to go after this season. Book is out on Nagy with whatever that offense is supposed to be. Mitch is probably out of the league in 2 years. Feels good. Nagy is also a moron. I see some people defending the kneel but that is just inexcusable. He had 40+ seconds left, a TO, and a fresh set of downs. HOW you don't run the ball a couple times and then quadruple down to the media is AMAZING. Not sure what the percentages are but even 2 or 3 % on a couple yard gain would have probably been the difference. Healthy Aaron Rodgers thanks Matt, Mitch, and Pace for the collapse.

  24. Ouch no thanks. Not giving up Cease just to have Betts here one season. That kind of move would kill the rebuild.

  25. Cowboys fans make me laugh at Prescott for numerous reasons. Can't wait to see the mistake money he's going to be making. Goff was so bad in the Super Bowl, I honestly couldn't laugh (though he and his team shouldn't of been there in the first place).

  26. I do think Ace's point does remain...a lot of QB's (even ones who are considered top 10ish in this league) play can fluctuate relatively dramatically week to week. Only the truly great ones deliver almost every single game. Young players play will fluctuate even greater (because in general their tends to be more variability / inconsistency, imo), that said, it happens with veteran QB's too. No different than a basketball player...sometimes they have great nights shooting the rock, sometimes not so good nights. Football and QB works the same way.

  27. Yes, which is why he won't win and shouldn't have even been nominated. He was never good before this year he isn't coming back from anything.

  28. Why did we have to see Goins and Skole as much as we did with Mendick here and Yermin waiting?

  29. He shouldn't be nominated. He doesnt fit the definition at all. Dont think soler fits either. Pence should run away with it.

  30. I don't think he should even be in this. What is he coming back from? He had a breakout year which would be "most improved" but not a comeback.

  32. sure, he could miss a 20 yard chip shot too I guess you'd need to dive down into win probabilities to see the risk/reward of getting say 3 yards closer and centering the ball (or putting it exactly wherever the kicker wants it) vs. the chance of losing yards or even a fumble. still don't think the kneel-down is the right call or defensible though but also, they lost because their kicker missed two FG's including one as time expired

  33. I thought Rogue One was actually really good. The rest has been total trash. The cast of characters in the ST is so lifeless that I have absolutely no investment in their story. Star Wars has lost all it's mystique. Retconning Palpatine is one of the most desperate things I recall in any series. I say this as a person whose office is almost completely decorated in OT memorabilia. The Mandalorian looks fantastic. I can't wait for that.
