  1. Imagine stealing signs from the 2017 White Sox.

  2. This is nothing new really; this culture has been building and intensifying since Luhnow took over. I loved Stras calling them out in the World Series - he said he was "tipping" but in reality he was calling the Astros on what a lot of baseball feels. Stealing signs legally is fine and a part of the game - using home field electronics is trashy and cheating. Period.

  3. I'm not at all a huge fan of Hahn & Co. and the drafting they've done, but at the end of the day they're 2nd round picks in baseball. How many teams actually make a killing drafting in the 2nd round? Here are a few examples of some teams that everyone considers to have exceptional scouting, especially compared to the Sox: Astros Last 10 2nd Rd Picks: 2012: Nolan Fotana 2013: Andrew Thurman 2014: A.J. Reed 2015: Tom Eshelman 2016: Ronnie Dawson 2017: Joe Perez/Corbin Martin/J.J. Matijevic 2018: Jayson Shroeder 2019: Grae Kessinger Rays Last 10 2nd Rd Picks: 2013: Riley Unroe 2014: Brent Honeywell Jr./Cameron Varga 2015: Chris Betts 2016: Jake Fraley /Ryan Boldt 2017: Michael Mercado 2018: Tanner Dodson/Tyler Frank 2019: John Doxakis Twins Last 10 2nd Rd Picks: 2012: J.T. Chargois/Mason Meoltakis 2013: Ryan Eades 2014: Nick Burdi 2015: Kyle Cody 2016: Akil Baddoo/Jose Miranda/Joe Rortvedt 2017: Landon Leach 2018: Ryan Jeffers 2019: Matt Canterino A's Last 10 2nd Rd Picks: 2012: Nolan Sanburn/Bruce Maxwell 2013: Chad Pinder/Dillon Overton 2014: Daniel Gossett 2015: Mikey White 2016: Logan Shore 2017: Greg Deichmann 2018: Jeremy Eierman/Jameson Hannah 2019: Tyler Baum Dodgers Last 10 2nd Rd Picks: 2011: Alex Santana 2012: Paco Rodriguez 2013: Tom Windle 2014: Alex Verdugo 2015: Josh Sborz/Mitchell Hansen 2016: Mitchell White 2017: Morgan Cooper 2018: Michael Grove 2019: Jimmy Lewis

  5. I mean their OPS was worse at home than on the road, so while it's shitty, I don't think there's a need to go that scorched earth

  6. There is nothing wrong with "stealing" signs from 2B or picking up something from the 3B coach. Having a CF camera focused on the opposing teams catcher, watching the feed in the tunnel and then relaying the signs is hilariously bad.

  7. That's wild. They should have to give us Alex Bregman now. It's only fair.

  8. If you review that season and find consistent proof of this cheating both during the regular season and throughout the playoffs, their championship should be vacated, imo. If I'm a team with a strong roster and we can pick up 10-15 home wins by literally filming signs and relaying to hitters, and the only punishment is losing a few draft picks, sign me up!

  9. Proud of them for not attacking the people who reported it this time at least.

  10. Posted to Ken Rosenthal's twitter a half hour ago, the Astros released a statement that follows: "Regarding the story posted by The Athletic earlier today, the Houston Astros organization has begun an investigation in cooperation with Major League Baseball. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time." I can imagine the Astros will release a statement saying "We have investigated ourselves and determined that we have done nothing wrong."

  11. One of the many reasons why I was rooting for the Nationals in that World Series. And yea Farquhar is a fucking gem. Outstanding job by the Sox bringing him back to the organization.

  12. He's awesome. Really glad he was hired.

  13. We know Nightengale can get chatter from agents and other teams too right? It all doesn't come from the White Sox.

  14. I would also say using electronics to notice pitch tipping in game is cheating. I wouldn't be shocked if the Astros were doing this with all their access to technology.

  15. Farquhar is a super smart dude, and the Astros are really outing themselves as an uber gross organization.

  16. It depends on which of his two teams you are referring to. He gets an A for helping to build the Padres and a C- for his overall work with the White Sox.

  17. Giolito lived up in the zone with his four seamer - as did Reylo. The Sox certainly are not sinker driven, lesser velocity, believers. That plan seemed to he individualized for Sale, and rightfully so as his arm hasnt held up since his full on drive towards maximizing velocity in boston.

  20. In the spirit of extreme optimism, let's address the issue of where to play Moncada, if the Sox can acquire Rendon. Some have vehemently resisted the idea of moving him to a new position, yet again. If it's true that Moncada has already stated his willingness to play the OF, I really don't see the problem. Not only would it make room for both Rendon at third and Madrigal at second, but it would fill the hole in RF. Yoan has the speed and athleticism to become an outstanding defensive right fielder. He also has a good enough arm for the position. I have heard some concerns about his past issues with hamstrings, but I'm not qualified to comment on that factor. If the Sox could acquire Rendon, that would only leave one more regular position to fill. Signing either Moose, or Grandal to rotate between first, DH and catcher, would fill the need for a left handed bat and complete the roster, for position players. Therefore, I don't agree with the suggestion of moving Moncada back to second. Madrigal will likely be a Gold Glove caliber defender, as soon as he joins the team and even if he were to start slowly, as a hitter, the Sox could easily hide his bat, with all of that thunder in the line up. That would leave the rotation, as the only remaining need for at least one more addition.

  21. I will not fall into the trap again and be disappointed when the team falls woefully short. Rendon won't be a White Sox.

  22. Perhaps you’re not familiar with the word “seemingly”?

  23. I would rather pay a great player like Rendon than get cute and force someone like Castellenos or someone else as a DH. I hate moving Moncada but reality is I want more elite players and Rendon is that.

  25. I’m certain they plan to be aggressive and I’m optimistic that everyone after the big three should be attainable despite Jerry’s limited risk tolerance. That being said, you just never with this guy and last offseason was an example of that. They said they were serious and ultimately made a large but half-assed offer for Machado. This year they simply need to get shit done...the time for excuses is over.

  26. How much of an effect do you think that signing Rendon would have on other free agents becoming intrigued with the idea of joining this emerging contender? If they could ink him to a deal, early in the off season, might some other big names think that they'd like to jump on the Sox train?

  27. These rumors are going to keep swirling for at least another month without anything happening and it is going to be miserable

  28. I'm under the impression that they will do absolutely anything to win baseball games and it's basically a certainty that they are cheating in many other ways.

  29. I'd like to address the point of view, often expressed here, that it is better not to allow oneself to be hopeful that the front office will spend the money to acquire a high priced free agent, because it sets one up for major disappointment. I have a different perspective. My satisfaction, or disappointment, is more a function of whether, or not, the front office does what I think would be the best thing. If I believe that this is the time to spend big on a free agent, then I will be disappointed, if they don't, even if I didn't expect them to. Whether, or not, I had high hopes is far less important. Theoretically, I could be of the opinion that it would be a mistake to commit too much to one, or more players, and in that instance, I could conceivably be disappointed that they did. In other words, I would be disappointed if they make what I consider to be a bad decision. My expectations are far less important than my judgement, regarding the wisdom of making any particular player acquisitions. To me, the notion that one shouldn't get their hopes up, for fear of disappointment, seems more like superstition. I hope that helps some of you who would like to be hopeful, but are afraid to do so. If you want Rendon, go ahead and be hopeful. Would you really be any less disappointed, if they don't sign him, just because you didn't expect it? The anticipation is half of the fun. I'm having a great time, just thinking about it. LOL

  31. 1. I know, again, that people on this site love the Astros. That feeling is not exactly shared by the players and the union. 2. Income tax difference over the life of the contract would be roughly; 2.35 million. That doesn't cancel out the 15 million in extra dollars by any means. So my answer is, wheeler would sign the bigger offer as would most every free agent.

  33. If Ryu goes for anything close to the 2/$32M projection from FG, the Sox should be all over it. I'd honestly prefer that to 5/$100M for Wheeler.

  34. Bumgarner is being dangerously overrated at this point.

  35. Nightengale said on the podcast that the Sox will be major players for every marquee free agent; take that for what it's worth.

  36. The fact that Rendon seems more interested in a shorter contract, could be a significant advantage here. We often talk about player opt outs, and how they can actually be advantageous, for management, as well as the player. Offering Rendon 5 years $200 million, is comparable to giving a player a longer contract, with an opt out, after 5 years. Such contracts are usually front end loaded, and $40 Million per year, is a number that would be commensurate with such a contract, for a Super Star. It might actually be better to pay him $200 Million for 5 years, than to give him a bigger and longer deal, with an opt out after 5 years. Such a contract would provide cost certainty and avoid the potential for having to pay for years of declining production. $200 Million seems preferable to the $300 Million given to Machado.

  37. You uh, said he would thrive. But I suppose that may mean just his personal health and not the results of the team. Also I just pointed out that two teams that spent less than Hahn in a rebuilding year where he wasn't trying to compete made the playoffs. I could have brought up that both teams that won his division sported payrolls less than Hahn has had during his "competing" years. And I'm sure instead of hiring personnel from the teams that can operate well on smaller budgets, one of 29 other teams will approach hahn to hire him, recognizing that he is just one of those execs that can't operate on a smaller budget but will thrive on a bigger one, but still wouldn't be the best GM in baseball. It's a pretty compelling case to hire him.

  38. Does he want to play 2B? Otherwise it’s a non starter for me, and likely the Sox. They aren’t going to jerk Moncada around again. Moncada is an elite defensive 3B. Leave him alone.

  40. But they cant spend too much future money cause they have to lock up current player at some point lol

  41. Let’s just sign Jose to a three-year contract already at $45M, $50M, whatever the hell it turns out to be, have a little love fest with the guy to start the offseason off on a positive note, and move on. Neither the length of, nor the money in, this contract is going to cripple this team in any way, shape, or form in either the near or long term future. Period. He’ll transition to DH at that time when appropriate, and that will be that. The clubhouse maintains its leader, and the organization keeps the face of the franchise. Win win all the way around.
