I hate to be that guy, but i wonder if his "baseball IQ" was overrated because he is a short, white, grindy player... His speed and defense as well. I'm not going to definitively say his baseball IQ is overrated after this small sample size, but i do wonder.

Madrigal is EXACTLY the kind of guy who can hit playoff pitching well. Not all of our free swingers are suited for October but Nick certainly is!

He's not going to hit .380, but I don't think .330-.345 for the majority of his prime is out of the question. I'd be surprised if he ever gets to double digits in HR in a season. He might max out at 6-8, with most seasons in the 3-5 range.

He’s been better than I expected. He’s not getting the bat knocked out of his hands by big time fastballs. And yes, he’s the perfect 9th hitter on this team (especially once RF is upgraded). I knew the base running and defense was overrated, but it’s not like he’s bad on defense. Also, I do think anyone hoping for 12-15 homers should see it’s not going to happen. He has Juan Pierre type power, not Pedroia.

He had a legitimate argument though. The pitch 2 before was a strike 4 inches inside. There is no way both of those pitches could be strikes. He was correct on that.

Part of it is that he didn't spend much time at the lower levels. He really hasn't learned what the capabilities of professional players are. This is the disadvantage of the player advancing so quickly. He'll figure it out with time.

There is literally zero excuse for his decision making outside of this season is weird and he's not thinking right. He ran to third on a ball hit right in front of him; you don't do that in little league. He tried to extend a double into a triple with ZERO outs. That is another thing not even a little leaguer does. He blew threw a stop sign and was hosed easily with the heart of the order coming up. Last night he argued an obvious strike with the umpire; the second time he's done that. That's another thing you just don't do and you look like a moron when you do it. I have no doubt 5'8 Madrigal is a smart baseball player, but so far he's played nothing like one.

Thru his first 40 major league at bats he’s hitting .400 and is .500 over his last 7 games... after being out of action for a month with an injured shoulder. However, according to some... he sucks and was a wasted 4th pick because his BABIP is high, slugging is low, his arm is weak, and his speed is overrated. I love this kid.

Second basemen are a dime a dozen. If he can be a supurb fielder and hit .280 with 0 homers and 47 RBIs in a regular season that will be fine. Now if he sucks fielding and does that, he gone. He doesn't ever figure to make big bucks as you say. If he can get one of those 6 year deals right now that teams sometimes give can't miss prospects he'd be smart to do so. Six years, 36 million. He should take it.

I have been one of the biggest Madrigal supporters on this forum; relentless in my crusade against Harold and his hatred of Nick. That doesn't mean he should be absolved of criticism on elementary mistakes. Again, SS2k called it hyperbole and it absolutely is not... there are many smart players who will never ever run into an out at 3rd base with the ball hit right in front of them to the SS. They will go their entire careers without doing it. Because it's stupid and inexplicable.

Nah. You can see he understands the game. I think he is still in a stage where he is trying to impress people and make an impression on fans. I don't think it is because he isn't a smart baseball player. He just needs to understand he can't take advantage of MLB players the way he did NCAA ones. I think he could have learned some of those lessons in the minors if he had more ABs and situations to learn them in. He FLEW through the minors. He will figure it out quickly.

He plays with a chip on his shoulder and I like it. That said, he needs to play within himself.

I would like to see a thread named for every player like this one devoted solely to Nick Madrigal. My opinion of Madrigal has evolved since I have seen him play in competitive games at the major league level. I like the fact that he tried pushing the envelope on the bases, that he runs out every grounder like it is a World Series game, and that he grinds out every at-bat hitting for a high average, even after two strikes. I also changed my mind that he is a small player. He isn't He has the upper body, arms and hands of a player that is a half a foot taller and the heart of a giant. When Nick runs the bases, his larger torso with small legs churning below remind me of the mascot races around the outfield. Seriously, Nick is a gamer and a great guy to have as one of our Chicago White Sox for years to come.

Good topic Ray Ray. I would explore 2 years $32 million for Michael Brantley. Lefty hitter, high on base %, does not strike out, still good defensively in RF, no known negative baggage and 32 years old. He would be a near perfect fit. 2 years for $32 mil. is exactly what he accepted two years ago. We should have signed him then, instead of chasing Machado & Harper.

I'm sorry but it should be expected that the White Sox spend significantly this off-season. I'm not expecting a $150 million payroll or anything but they have close to $45 million coming off the books. They should replace that at a minimum and they'd still be a medium sized payroll. They need at least 1 starting pitcher, right field and bullpen help. It should be doable even with the "catastrophic losses".

Because the concept of a bubble has evolved and these kids are probably starting to understand that if they risk themselves, they risk everyone and everything they are working for.

Ding ding ding. Let's be real, dude probably feels like he's had to earn his place on the diamond all his life. He might have the best bat-to-ball skills in the majors, but because people are expecting him to be a seasoned 5 year veteran, we're ripping a dude hitting .380. If he hadn't missed a month, he'd probably be #3 in the ROY discussion based solely on his absurd batting average. To him, that might seem unfair so maybe internally he tries to stretch hits into doubles or triples to even it out. I don't know because I'm not a sports psychologist.
