  1. I'm actually ok with them going for defense with Simmons or Iglesias at 2B in the 9-spot if it means they signed Conforto as well. If the only 3 moves after the lockout (not counting minor league depth signings) are trading Kimbrel and clearing that whole salary, signing Conforto, and signing Simmons/Iglesias to play 2nd and bat 9th, I would be completely ok with that. Hold on to the prospects and young MLB players (Crochet, Vaughn, Sheets, etc) and just spend.

  2. Here’s the problem - a very young roster shouldn’t be bumping up against the luxury tax with several glaring holes.

  3. Hard pass on Vaughn + Montgomery + “2 or 3 other pieces” for Marte.

  4. Of all of the young SP, there is no one I am holding on tighter to than Vera. He has true ace potential.

  5. Coby White is 0-9 from 3 tonight and the refs have been garbage yet we are only down 3 late in the 4th quarter.

  6. If you told me the game would be tied w/3 minutes left in 3rd quarter and Bulls had missed 18 straight 3's at one point, I would have said you were crazy.

  7. That was what got me more angry. He didn't go over and see if Caruso was okay (or if he did he did it way after the fact) and than he was laughing. Dude could have ruined Caruso's season with that play. If that happened on the playground, Grayson isn't walking off the court without a black eye.

  8. What a punk - even his reaction afterwards was punk.

  9. Please let Caruso be okay - that was a hard foul. That is a Flagrant 2 - that was totally excessive and Grayson has a history of this.

  10. Grayson Allen needs to be suspended. That was horrendous and dirty foul. I am going off first reaction (vs. replay). But total trash foul. The other hand winding up and taking him down was extremely DIRTY.

  11. This is so dumb. It’s not like there is anything better to do. Announce this shit already.

  12. Eloy is absolutely a question mark when he has major issues staying healthy and those injuries affect his offensive performance.

  14. Just for grins: 2 - Yaz is average as a catcher (framing taken into account), and well above average at the plate. But how often can he be counted on to catch? 3 - Abreu is likely, in at least some degree, in decline. High GDP and lowering BA indicate as much. The numbers don't show a lot in his field play, but the eyeball test says he improved as a fielder last year. Leadership and attitude keep his rank high - but superstar? Not unless he re-surges at the plate. 4 - We don't have a 4. 6. - TA brings a lot to the table. Great leadership and attitude with first class athletic ability but he's an average MLB SS and just doesn't like walks which drags his OBP down. A very high above-average player but not quite a superstar at this point. 5 - Moncada is an above average fielder that makes some super plays with good OBP at the plate, but hasn't produced as much SLG power as most of us would like to see. Above average. 7 - Eloy is still a question mark. For all the superstar plate potential he has, we don't really know what he is at this point. 8 - I honestly think Robert can put up near Trout numbers at the plate and exceed Trout in the field -------- if he doesn't get hurt. An 'if' that inconveniently gets in the way of superstar status. 9 - We don't have a 9. Depth - is at least interesting. Engel and Leury are IMO first class depth guys. i.e. Assuming Engel can play most of a season. Vaughn and Sheets are still question marks - and for all practical purposes still prospects. I won't go into the 1's in much detail, but will say that we're not as strong in starters as we were last year. Replacing Rodon's first half performance will be challenging. Lynn needs to get in shape. Can Keuch rebound? Can Kopech 'stretch' into a starter role? Lot of uncertainty there. I still think the Sox need another reliever. Tepera is still on the market. Too many holes and question marks for me to call this team loaded. Good thing we're in the AL Central.

  15. There is basically no scenario short of acquiring a top 5 3B in the league that will make moving Moncada to 2B anything but message board fodder. He's a great defensive 3B. He was not a great defensive 2B. Why are we downgrading 2 positions? Continues to make zero sense everytime someone suggests this. As the roster sits today, the best 2B options are Leury and Romy. Even if the Sox go cheap at 2B, they're certain to at least add a veteran utility player that can platoon with Leury. Depending on who we get for RF, Leury also isn't likely to just lose his OF glove either.

  16. Engel was also hurt. Vaughn may have been up as our DH without those injuries but it definitely forced their hand. By the time Sheets was needed our 4 top OFs to start year were gone (eaton dfa), leury had to be more often at 2b, and brian goodwin was our CF. So it was injury fueled for sure. If Robert is there, Vaughn/Goodwin/Robert would have been enough to keep Sheets down.

  17. Even if you take ONLY the roster of the Sox TODAY for the team. The best combo is Leury at 2B and Moncada at 3B.

  20. From Athletic.com headline... "We are just 26 days from the start of spring training and 70 from Opening Day, two dates that feel as artificial as ever. It’s possible we don’t see much of spring training, and as each day passes, the likelihood of missing games soars — something our Ken Rosenthal says will be a stain on MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s entire career. Ken articulates something that’s largely been missing from the overall narrative: how lopsided this negotiation really is in favor of owners. There is a tendency for all of us, media included, to both-sides a dispute like this, when it’s far from even. Here’s Ken: “The players actually occupy something of a high ground in this dispute, perhaps even in the view of certain fans who continue to view them as spoiled and overpaid. Many fans historically side with owners, who earn far more money than players, stay in the game longer and make their financial records public only when legally required, as is the case with the publicly traded companies that own the Braves and Blue Jays.” Manfred, who made his name negotiating collective bargaining agreements, will only face more pressure as the days dwindle. The league took 43 days to offer any proposal after locking the players out. If baseball has a shortened season, fans will turn away. For now, Manfred must somehow satisfy both large-market and small-market owners without, oh, tanking the entire sport. The players, meanwhile, just want to recoup some of what they lost in the last CBA. Good luck, commissioner.

  21. For some reason it doesn’t seem right trading two first round draft choices for a second baseman.
    1 point
  22. That may be true currently, but he’s also the best choice for 3B.

  23. And a way better option at 3rd base.

  24. As Whataboutisms go, We did it before, so why not keep doing it the same way is a pretty awful one. There is nothing wrong with learning from what you know today and adjusting your thinking to match. As for Curt, I always kind of felt his peak didn't last long enough, or wasn't great enough to overcome the rest of his career. He didn't hit any of the big key numbers. He never won a Cy Young. Close, but not quite for me.

  25. I mean...Schilling's opinions that definitely doomed him are Islamophobia, transphobia, and saying lynching journalists is awesome (doesn't sit well with the BBWAA, I imagine). We don't even need to delve into his political views after those three. As for shit people in the Hall, yeah, Cap Anson would probably have a hard time getting in now, but he didn't while baseball was still segregated. Him being in is a bigger insult than Pete Rose or Shoeless Joe would be.

  26. Schilling used to come in a local AZ radio show weekly when he played here, and he is undoubtedly one of the best athletes I’ve ever heard on the radio. He never shied away from giving his opinion on anything. I’m not a fan of his politics, and I don’t think I ever really liked him as a person, but to be held out because of your beliefs seems unfair. We want athletes to have opinions and be interesting- as long as we agree with them, I guess.

  27. And politics has nothing to do with sporting achievement which is what the HoF should be about. There are plenty of unpleasant characters who were great players in the HoF.

  28. Especially if Schilling doesn't. Schilling is an ass and I hate almost everything he says politically, but his politics didn't give him an unfair advantage on the field.

  30. I mean, Ortiz getting in on HOF #1 just kind of blows up the argument that this was ever about steroids. The same test that nabbed Sosa nabbed him...so, might as well let in A-Rod, Manny, Bonds, Sosa and Clemens if steroids are the reason their being held out. If they want to hold them out due to character, whatever, fine. But stop lying to fans and saying its steroids when Minnesota Twins first baseman David Ortiz Scott Rolen should just be in, but you have voters like Nick Canepa who should clearly have their voting rights revoked: The reason it's so vitriolic and politicized is because MLB and the BBWAA have made it such, especially with all of the rules and hoops they've made to deny (or allow) players. The Basketball Hall of Fame "lets" voters look at players' entire careers, but it took Manfred recognizing the Negro Leagues as major leagues for baseball voters to be "allowed" to do that for some players.

  32. I was told it was going to be easy to replace Madrigal because second base is an easy position to find a player at.

  33. If Madrigal gets elected to Hall of Fame 20 years from now, will he go in wearing a White Sox cap, or Cubs?

  34. How about Tadahito Iguchi? He turns 47 today. He may still be young enough.

  35. I think it is safe to say they will not be trading for Nick Madrigal.

  36. I can just picture the OF defense lol Unless we play him at DH and run out Sheets/Vaughn in the OF? (Still not ideal for OF D). Just throwing that out there as I dont see us signing him.
