    Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers

How is that different than someone signing a 4 year deal for 54 mil. Then after 2 or 3 years they either suck, or are riddled with injuries and get released? They get their 54 mil still, whether it happened after 1 year, 3 years or they played out their contract. The reality is, he would have to become near useless to not have that 4th year picked up. But that could happen. Those are the risks of a middle aged relief pitcher.

I don't see the Sox moving Eloy to DH. But if they do and he is ok with it, then fine I guess.

I don't see where Benintendi fits on the Sox? I'd rather keep Lopez for relief. He might be really good in that role.

Any player with a guaranteed contract could get the total amount with less years played. The bottom line is, it's a 4yr/54 mil contract, but they have the option of creatively paying the final year off if the contract goes south.
  5. I was at the clinching game in 83, but not any playoff games. Great childhood memories

My God, he's only played 29 games. You act like he's given us years of bad defense.

I think goes back to the food guys saying the Sox have been shopping Madrigal, and let's face it - the food guys have been accurate on just about everything lately. I like Madrigal a lot. But if the Sox move him for a young pitcher, and it leads to a loaded rotation, we'll all live and the chances of the Sox going all the way will be increased.

Hmm, seems odd that Milwaukee would shop Burnes. Not sure I buy that.
  9. Awesome! Now get us a starter!

Yeah, I replied the poster who replied about this as a Sox need, not to your post.

Yeah, this ship sailed when Eaton was signed.

I think it might be consequential potentially, especially if injuries come up. But if ever there is a time to take on a bit more of a risk than they normally would, it's now. Even if you give him 4 years @ 50 mil. In a normal time, that might not be a great signing. But I think right now it would be a great signing. I keep thinking back to 2016, how Andrew Miller was the ALCS MVP, and Chapman dominated for the Cubs. A shutdown bullpen can take a team really far.

It might be a bad idea. But does anyone else get the feeling the Sox are viewing this as a strict 3 year window to go all out (all out as far as Jerry's wallet will allow at least). And if something blows up in their face, then it does. If you fast forward 3 years, Lynn will likely be gone, Keuchel will be gone, Giolito will be a free agent (barring an extension at some point), La Russa and Reinsdorf are obviously a bit long in the tooth. The next 3 years seems like the prime window, and if they are unwilling to take risks, then they hurt their chances of converting on a World Series trophy.

    Dodgers sign Bauer (3/102, opt-outs, 40-45-17)

If the Sox pulled off this miracle, then suddenly their roster is as good as anyone's on paper.

To each his own. I just like that me and my friends talk baseball all winter, which the offseason dragging on allows. The Blackhawks start in less than 2 weeks, and we're talking as much about the Sox as the Hawks at my work. I like not having to shut baseball off ever, like we generally do with other sports.

The Lance Lynn trade wasn't even a month ago.

I enjoy baseball's offseason dragging on. If we had one week of free agency, then 3 months of silence, that would suck IMO.

Aaron is a credible Bears insider.

Just asking - is anyone concerned that some NL Central pitchers' numbers are fluffed up because these pitchers faced garbage offenses most nights?

I don't know. One wouldn't think so. But on the other hand, the whole NL Central seems to be moving backwards. I would include Kopech for Woodruff. Not Vaughn or Crochet though.

We don't know if Q would even sign here. I mean, even if he does well, if there's no injuries and Kopech comes up at some point, he would be squeezed out to the pen. He might rather find a spot with a more secure spot in the rotation.

I think the Woodruff stuff comes from the Not Steve Cishek dude on twitter, who probably has been right more often than most of the other Sox 'insiders'. People probably figure if they considered it last season, they still might?

Gray scares me after how he sucked in New York. Could he be one of those guys that is better off on low pressure teams and towns? But I like that the Sox still seem to be aggressive and going for it. Sounds like they're just waiting for something to pop.

    Joe Musgrove Thread

I'm not so sure they wouldn't move either of them. I think Crochet is less likely to be moved than Kopech and Cease at this point. But if you're going for it and you trade for a good starting pitcher, you're going to have to give up something that stings a bit. I've said this name before...what about Kyle Hendricks? Who knows if the Cubs would move him with where they're at now. He's World Series tested. He's as consistent as any starter in baseball. He's on a nice contract, with 3 years and 42 mil left, plus an option year (not sure of the terms). He would probably fit in as our #2 behind Giolito, and ahead of Lynn and Keuchel.

I wonder if the Sox would consider calling the Cubs up about Zach Davies? He could fill in nicely for that extra starter they need, and they're only on the hook for this coming season, if Jerry is worried about longterm commitments. He makes 8.5 mil in 2021 it looks like.
