Here's an admittedly controversial idea...sign Didi and trade TA to Miami for Sandy Alcantara (young All-Star RH SP) and JJ Bleday, RF of the future.

I can't imagine the Marlins wanting to do that trade.

Fwiw, Paddy and KW were much more heavily involved in talking to Tatis’ father and bringing him on board than Hahn.

The more likely answer is Hahn knew very little about Tatis before the trade, and/or Paddy didn’t push back hard enough, since he was the most involved.

Or they both simply acquiesced because JR was more concerned with the money coming over from SD than the talent going out.

I was more getting at acquiring a has-been after his prime (Shields) as KW did over and over during his tenure as GM.

Those are the pitchers between Tier 1A and third tier.

Hamels, Pomeranz...that’s basically it.   Roark, Pineda and Gibson are basically interchangeable...and you could just as easily argue for Hill, Wood, Wacha, Porcello or even Teheran.

Basically, you’re a serious/legit suitor on the top group or you’re just nibbling around the edges and picking over the scraps or leftovers.

If you miss the good free agent pitchers, you don't just settle for garbage. You go to plan B and explore the trade market.

Again, there's going to be more competition for Wheeler than Cole or Strasburg.

I'd be shocked if they landed Wheeler. I think he's everyone's #1 target actually.

I've been saying for a while that Wheeler will be the most sought after free agent this winter. They're going to be competing with teams like the Yankees and Astros. The Sox need to bring a big offer early.

Love the peripherals but does anyone else have concerns about Wheeler as a TOR guy? I know about his injuries in the past and his velo and 3 pitch arsenal but he's been pretty ordinary when healthy. I'd imagine Mets would figure out a way to sign him if he was that valuable.

Well there's only 2 guys in free agency that really are TOR. So, if you can't sign Cole or Strasburg, Wheeler is probably the next best get. If the Sox signed Wheeler, I'd probably look at him as our #2 behind Giolito, until proven otherwise.

  6. It's hard to know what is his fault or not his fault. It felt before the rebuild started that Hahn was restricted, or like his hands were tied. For instance, the Tatis Jr. trade smells like a KW move now, just like it did then. Ultimately we're not in the front office and who knows what the truth is.

I will say I've liked the trades that launched the rebuild, so I'm willing to let this rebuild play out and see how Hahn does. This winter is incredibly important. The free agent market has it's limitations, but that doesn't mean he can't swing some trades if things aren't there to sign. I'm expecting the Sox to look like a playoff caliber team by February/March, and if they aren't, that will largely be on Rick Hahn.

I’d be incredibly disappointed if our offseason was signing two of that second group.

I would be incredibly disappointed if Keuchel is the best SP they landed this off-season. They need to not screw this winter up (again).

There are things people say that help you understand how they view baseball.  Errors are very high on that list.

Right. Giving 4th outs to the other team is usually a good idea *rolls eyes*

  9. Personally I'd leave Moncada alone. He is blossoming in to an elite player - there's no need to mess with him. The idea of moving TA was just as much to get away from his errors at shortstop as it was to fill the hole in the Sox lineup.

I don't hate this really but it's hard to imagine Tim just being fine with moving to RF.  He basically said Machado can fuck himself if he thought he was going to walk in and be the SS in 2019.

If we are playing MLB the Show here, why not move Yo to RF and give Rendon a fat bag?

Yeah Tim did say that. And the he went on to lead MLB in errors, despite missing almost 40 games. To me it should be an easy decision to move him. You can't keep allowing that many errors to come from your shortstop.

  11. Nothing would improve this team as much as signing Gerrit Cole, but I'll do this assuming the Sox wont spend the cash needed for Cole or Strasburg:

    * Sign Zack Wheeler (or Madbum as 2nd choice after Wheeler) - 5 years 100 mil

    * Sign Didi Gregorius to play SS - 2 years 18 mil

    * Move Tim Anderson to RF

    * Sign Nick Castellanos to DH - 4 year - 65 mil

    * Sign any backend risk/reward type of starter you can get for a one year prove-it deal. You mostly only need this guy until Kopech comes back. Rotation would be full with Wheeler, Giolito, Cease, Kopech and Lopez. And Dunning could be coming soon as well.

    * Fill out pen with an arm or two

Obviously Tim would have to be ok with moving to RF. You'd have spring training to get him used to it. He has the arm and athleticism to excel out there, and it could allow Robert to cheat slightly towards LF to cover more ground for Eloy. It's a double win, because you get rid of the crazy amount of errors he makes at SS. Tim's WAR could go through the roof with this move, and he would probably be a far better solution in RF than any free agent the Sox could sign to play out there.

For DH - Castellanos might refuse to sign as a DH. Potentially trading for JDM could work just as well. I don't think the Sox would have to give up much of anything to get JDM, given Boston's need to move him and the likelihood they would have few suitors for him.

I have to wonder if it really makes sense to spend that kind of money on a guy that is out there every 5 days. Cole wont win the division for this team.  As bad as the staff was last year I don't have any confidence in Cooper.

Not that I expect them to sign Cole. But if they did, they absolutely could win this division. Because they're not going to spend a fortune to sign sign Cole and then leave all the other holes wide open. This team has the potential to get ridiculous and fast.

Not that I think they'd do it, but I'd do JDM, Sale and Benintendi for Madrigal+fringe prospects.

I'd probably do Madrigal for Benintendi straight up

Gross. Madigral is going to be a good one. If they ever made a stupid trade like that, I'd immediately and forever be on the fire Rick Hahn bandwagon.

I suggested Vaughn but maybe that's too much. Don't know, I was just thinking..

I'm not totally against moving Vaughn. I think he's our one big prospect that isn't essential to the rebuild succeeding.

That said, I would not move him for Benintendi. That would be a major overpayment IMO.

5 to 6 for each I agree with, I thought you were suggesting a good 18 teams would be after each one of them.  I still think we should easily be able to afford all three guys, whether or not Hahn can actually execute that plan is another story.

Wheeler will be the tough one. If I had to bet, I'd say he will be the free agent with the most teams interested in him. Everyone needs pitching and most cant afford Cole or Strasburg. He's the next prize.

So the Sox are supposed to trade for JDM give up assets and free up Boston to solve their pitching woes when we need pitching more than we need JDM ?

Probably a similar need, given the Sox had the worst DH numbers in the AL.

Well he is probably learning about his market right now and seeing if it is worth it to opt out. He he doesn't we go to plan B. I'd try to get Stras and Grandal

I'd love that. I'd just be shocked if Strasburg actually leaves the Nats. I don't think we should look at that as anything but highly unlikely (like less than a 1% chance).

  18. My gut says he doesn't opt out. He has until tomorrow. I think if he was opting out, he would of done it already (as some Boras guys already have like Strasburg). Boras and JD might worry that he doesn't even get the $62.5 mil he is owed out on the free agent market. That or maybe he doesn't want to play for the teams that likely would offer him a good contract (like the Sox?).

  19. 45 minutes ago, Dick Allen said:

No sign and trades in MLB.

I think he worded that wrong. The only way the Sox would trade for JD is if he doesn't opt out - in which case, he's already signed. And as we discussed before, the Sox might prefer something like this. It would probably be a lesser dollar commitment required that signing him if he opts out. Just don't give up any of our top 7 or 8 prospects for him and I'm fine.

There is zero chance the Cubs decline Quintana's option.

For sure. But there's definitely a chance they don't want him back. Would Theo swallow his pride and trade him back to the Sox? Or does that stir up too much bs for him?

Quintana straight up for Jonathan Stiever.

    Who says no?

For the OP - most of the prices seem about right. I thought Puig's was actually too high. I'm going to be annoyed if the Sox sign Puig.
