Why can we not make such a comparison? The Sox have been interested in both outfielders for the past two years. We have seen both names linked to the Sox in the media! Where have you been? A lefty corner outfielder was one of Hahn’s targets this entire offseason. Guess what? We can compare both of them to Kole Calhoun as well if we want to! There’s no doubt that Hahn and company discussed all three players and more.
The fact is, Joc is a better player than Mazara. Mazara has one more year of control before free agency but that doesn’t mean much unless he breaks out.
If the price is as low as it initially looks for the Angels getting Joc and a starter out of this deal, yeah it would suck.
Mazara has far more faults than Joc so it really isn’t a good argument — can’t hit lefties, doesn’t walk much, can’t play defense well, and couldn’t put up big power numbers at a hitter’s haven (only hit 20 HR each year).
Someone didn’t look at Mazara’s splits against lefties before making this post. 😉
Overall, Mazara has been a worse hitter than Joc while playing his home games at a hitter’s haven of a ballpark.
I guess you could look at this two ways. The Twins are now better for the next 3 years or so so the Sox will need every win they can get next season. Or, the Sox will be better served gaining an additional year of control over Madrigal years from now when the Twins may be in decline or possibly rebuilding by then.
I honestly think it has zero impact and the Sox will stick to their plan of keeping Madrigal down regardless.
I would hope that Hahn and the Sox aren’t that narrow-minded when a better player becomes available. And I don’t think they are. For example, they signed Grandal because they know McCann is fool’s gold.
I’m not sure what you are arguing here. I was happy with all of the offseason moves except for Mazara and I stated as much.
The Angels gave up a much lesser prospect for one year of a better outfielder than the Sox gave up for two years of a worse outfielder. Do you disagree with this?
But your argument makes no sense. The Angels are just another team like the White Sox, and they gave up jack squat for Joc. What was stopping the Sox from making a crappy offer for Joc?
Why not? Offer more for Joc than the Angels did. Mazara could’ve been moved again.
As it stands now, the Sox gave up a better prospect for 2 years of Mazara than the Angels gave up for 1 year of a much better outfielder.
