    Worst off-season ever?!?

I like your grades except I would swap the ones for Alonso and McCann. McCann is bad but he’s only $2.5 million of bad. Alonso is $9 million of mediocrity and Hahn helped free up money for a division rival. Also, Hahn’s family and friends plan wasn’t even necessary as Machado went to the highest bidder, as all free agents will.

    Sox in on Denard Span

Hahn: “Well Kenny, we missed out on Manny. What’s next?” Kenny: “Don’t worry... have you seen how many great free agents are left?!? Span, Jones, CarGo! These guys were studs and I know they still have some gas left in the tank!” Hahn: “I did tell the fans we wouldn’t be signing anymore stop-gap players.” Kenny: “Don’t worry about that. Remember 2005? It worked then. That’s all the fans remember.”

Will Yonder and Jay be gone by midseason?

Excellent point. The Sox will prove Machado was right not to bet on himself at ages 33 and 34 to hit 550 plate appearances each season to make the two extra options hit. They will prevent Alonso’s 2020 $9 million dollar option from hitting by preventing him from reaching 550 plate appearances. Hahn and Kenny have gotten to the point of flat-out lying to the Sox fan base.

    Sox in on Denard Span

I do expect one of Jones / CarGo / Span to be in the OF on opening day.
  5. Since the Sox weren’t expected to compete this year - with or without Machado - would anyone else rather have had Hahn not sign or trade for any of the guys in the list below this offseason and just give the extra $40 - $50 million in savings to Machado up front this year? Afterall, Hahn spent $45 million this offseason on two mediocre #4 starters, two good relievers, and three bench bats. Ivan Nova - $9 million (1 year) Yonder Alonso - $9 million (likely 1 year) Kelvin Herrera - $9 million (2 years) Alex Colome - $7.325 million (2 years) Jon Jay - $4 million (1 year) James McCann - $2.5 million (1 year) UPDATE: Ervin Santana - $4.5 million (1 year) - IF he makes the team 🙄 Obviously, the Padres didn’t need to bring in friends and family (Alonso and Jay) to lure Machado in and both could have been replaced by Palka and Engel who were already on the current roster. Nova could have been replaced by Covey and the eventual call-up of Cease. If you don’t trade for Colome, you still have Narvaez as your backup catcher to Castillo and you don’t sign McCann. You miss out on two really good relievers but you give more innings to the young Sox relievers. Santana is a 36 year old starter who will try to stay healthy so he can be moved at the deadline for a warm body. Santana could have been replaced by any warm body in the Sox minors. For all of Hahn’s talk about not signing stop-gap players, that’s exactly what he has done this offseason. He appears to have planned poorly for his end goal of Machado and made some truly awful moves in general and in hindsight. I know I’d rather have one Machado this offseason than the mediocre list of players above.

    Machado’s Missing $50 Million?

    Updated with Santana signing!
  7. I created a thread for this. Amazing isn’t it?
  8. LOL, this front office is so damn predictable. Kenny must be loving these additions.
  9. I’d rather see Covey and Banuelos and any other younger guy with a pulse from the minor.
  10. But it’s the same mediocre crap that we have seen already year in and year out that never produces a winner so why bother?
  11. Moan4Yoan

    CarGo anyone?

First Ervin Santana, next CarGo. Kenny and Hahn are giddy with excitement to continue their dumpster-diving instead of wasting $300 million on one player.
  12. It never ended. Jay, McCann, and now Santana...

    CarGo anyone?

    CarGo anyone?

I rather roll with Leury/Rondon and see what they can do on the cheap. If the Sox aren’t a contender, why add a high-priced utility guy?
  15. Moan4Yoan

    CarGo anyone?

He’s the type of guy you should be able to produce from your farm system or sign cheaply. Marwin is going to get overpaid.
  16. Only reason I don’t care is because it’s a minor league deal. Otherwise, more mediocrity from the expert on all things mediocre himself, Rick Hahn. Sign Harper and I will start caring.
  17. Moan4Yoan

    CarGo anyone?

Marwin is turning 30 on March 14th. Regardless, I don’t get the love for him.

    CarGo anyone?

Will Yonder and Jay be gone by midseason?

Yes, with the hindsight of knowing how miserably Hahn would fail, I too would have rather seen Avisail Garcia in RF and Palka at DH full time over the combination of Alonso and Jay.

Will Yonder and Jay be gone by midseason?

Do you really want to overpay to bring back a 33 year old DH with an already declining bat? No thanks. We should only be concerned with keeping Abreu healthy until the trade deadline to move him for a mediocre return.

Will Yonder and Jay be gone by midseason?

One can only hope. The last thing we need is Alonso’s $9 million option kicking in for 2020... “2020 option guaranteed if Alonso 1) passes physical after 2019 season and 2) has 550 plate appearances in 2019 or 1,100 plate appearances in 2018-19 combined” I have faith the Sox won’t let this happen but a mediocre 1B bat with a $9 million dollar salary for this year might not be so easy to move by the deadline. But they can always bench him and play Palka so he doesn’t hit the incentive.
  22. Well, if you are sure Tatis is going to be a star, you take him all day over Machado because of $300 million. Problem is, either way the Sox lost both to the Padres and they will reap all of the benefits for the cost of an extra $50 million and James Shields. 🤮

Rebuild: Phase 3 has officially begun

It wouldn’t be and no one that has argued this point has explained why it would be premature. Even if you sign Arenado or Rendon next offseason, they will both be 29 at the beginning of the season. Both Harper and Machado will still be younger going forward. It’s just a weak argument to try to deny Hahn’s failure to land a top free agent after planning to do so for over a year.

    Worst off-season ever?!?

Follow baseball much? Machado at 26 years old has a career .822 OPS, 4x All-Star, 2x Gold Glover, and a career WAR of 33.8. Harper at 26 years old has a career .900 OPS, Rookie of the Year, 6x All-Star, 2015 MVP, and a career WAR of 27.4. Harold Baines, Hall of Fame DH, has a career .820 OPS, 6x All-Star, zero Gold Gloves, and a career WAR of 38.7. Unless Machado and Harper both get hit by a bus tomorrow, they will both eventually be in the Hall of Fame. Also, while I agree with you on Grandal, Moustakas is not a very good player at all and I wouldn’t be excited about giving Pollock a 4 year deal at age 31.
