  1. Went to the game today and my god this team is awful, is such a numb feeling going to the games now. It’s wild to me that an owner of not just one but TWO major league sports teams in one of the most passionate sports cities in the world can be so damn tone def, FFS just let someone else make this organization great. The SOB said David Eckstein is his favorite baseball player of all time, god I hate Jerry Reinsdorf.

Orioles circled back on Cease the other day apparently. No idea if it’ll be them but I’ve talked to people who still think he moves.

And it’s not gonna go anywhere, Chris Getz is rightfully holding firm. Unless they’re giving up Basallo or Mayo for Jesus Luzardo, they’ll probably end up with a Shane Bieber or another lesser tiered trade target than Cease.

  3. Orioles will circle back of course and Chris Getz will turn them the other way around. I doubt Getz is gonna budge therefore a deal will not get done and that is perfectly fine with me.
Should not settle for any less than Kjerstad and Westburg.

But then we are looking at a Burnes-like return anyways.

Not if he has a solid first half, they’ll do much better than that. Hell look at what the Reds got for Tyler Mahle a year and a half ago at the deadline. They weren’t top 100 guys at the time but now are legit young major league contributors. I get why the Brewers took that deal but it was such an underwhelming return, I’d rather ride out Cease’s contract.

Nightengale reported that Baltimore was basically offering this same package and another player for Cease. I doubt it's any of the big 5 or the Sox probably make the deal.

Good on Getz’ part then for holding firm. Good on Mike Elias for getting an ace with that underwhelming return.

Getz had a group of three players he targeted from the O's.  He wanted two of them.  The O's were only willing to give up one of them.  A deal was never going to happen because they were too far away.  Ortiz was not one of the three players.

Good on Getz for not budging and standing his ground. Kjerstad and Westburg would have been the exact return needed to give up on 2 full seasons of a Cy-Young Candidate to ignite the “re-tool”.

Good on Mike Elias for finding a better deal. That’s why he’s built, arguably, the most talented organization in baseball

There is no scenario in which this trade doesn't hurt Chris Getz' efforts to move Cease, and possibly being forced to keep him until July could end up being a disaster because of the risk involved.

They have him for 2 full seasons. If he was a FA after this season, maybe. But if Cease can remain healthy, and doesn’t regress, which again I’m pretty confident in him having a solid season, Getz will get a haul for him come the deadline when more than half the league is looking for starting pitching, let alone, beyond half a seasons worth of control.

Cease is worth more than Joey Ortiz, DL Hall, and a Colton Cowser who may have not even been on the table, I think @Y2Jimmy mentioned Elias balked at a similar offer at the deadline

I’ve said a few times I don’t think waiting until the trade deadline to deal Cease is worth the injury risk.  But I also don’t know what the trade offers are that Getz has received.

Probably wasn’t much better than what the Brewers got for Burnes. I highly doubt Kjerstad was on the table. And that’s the main piece I would have needed back in return

Man, this is brutal. Absolutely undermines a ton of Getz' leverage now and may force him to take a giant risk on Cease by holding onto him until the deadline.

This is a big kick to nuts not just because it makes one of our suitors (still) far less desperate, but with such a mediocre return it also potentially lowers the price on Cease. That's tough. What a fucking blow.

It’s only a blow if a deal was actually close for Cease which seemingly it never was. I’m sure Getz knew what was available, good on him for not budging. I get most of us wanted a RF and 2B to kickstart this “re-tool” and the O’s assuming they were ready to play ball and go hard after Cease made a ton of sense, the Sox aren’t a RF and 2B away from winning a division. Let Cease cook with a better game caller and better defense behind him and let the contenders (O’s included) come calling at the deadline. Good on the O’s for fleecing the Brewers.

  10. There will always be an offer on the table for Cease that is better than the one the O’s gave up fo Burnes. Once Cease pitches the 1st half of the season like a Cy Young candidate, plenty of teams will come calling still.

The Rangers aren't someone we have talked about a lot, but boy could they put together a top notch deal if they wanted to.

Especially if they lose out on Montgomery..

Heyman is on at 2pm CST on that Bleacher Report app, fully expecting him to say that Dylan Cease may or may not be traded

    What a boring offseason.

Maybe it’s just me, and maybe there’s more to it, but little things like Michael Lorenzen who is coming off a pretty solid year being forced to have to throw a bullpen session for interested teams tells me how much penny pinching is going on in baseball. The MLB offseasons continue to just suck.
