    2022 Hall of Fame ballot

Buehrle won't make it this year but I think if he can hit 20-25% this year, I think he's got a decent chance of making it by the sixth or seventh year. I'm just glad that people are starting to reckon with his career and take it seriously. His numbers put him in a pretty elite class of pitchers. And I just don't think in the future we will see pitchers like him ever again. To be honest, in five years, the average innings starters throw is going to start to be somewhere around 160-170. You might see one pitcher hit 200 innings. Buehrle was truly a historic pitcher and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. I kind of thought before he retired that he and maybe Kershaw were the only two pitchers who could seriously make a run at 300 wins.

    Cease hired Boras as agent

Eh. We have signed Boras client in the past and will likely continue to do so. It really doesn't mean that much in the long term.

Mets could shop McNeil, Sox could have interest

YES. Perfect birthday gift for me.

Carlos Rodon and a 6-man Sox rotation?

I'm down. And I think people are underestimating the Sox willingness to spend major money and get over $200 million in payroll.

Scherzer to Mets for 3 yrs/$130m

If Scherzer is not drunk and shirtless in his press conference, I'm tuning out.

James Fox: Can’t Ignor-as Boras, Sox will spend

Who besides Giolito is arbitration eligible? I think my point being is that the teams who are spending like drunken sailors are doing so because they have huge holes and are desperate.. They also have no money on the books. I do think that if the Sox have the chance to get Schwarber, they won't pass it up. If it pushes them to $200 million, so be it. Iit's very possible that one of the stipulations put in place moving forward is that there be a floor for team's payrolls. Which means we might make what qualifies for the luxury tax to be higher. Although even when the White Sox were rebuilding, their payrolls were still somewhat high.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal

Cesar sucked but he actually hit a home run against the Cubs that I saw in person (believe he hit two in that series). He actually had a great first two weeks with the Sox before proceeding to suck.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal

Because contracts will likely favor the players moving forward. This is pretty damn team friendly for a utility player.

James Fox: Can’t Ignor-as Boras, Sox will spend

Right now, the White Sox have the second largest payroll in the AL. I don't have the exact number but it's north of $170 million I believe. And this isn't taking into account the players like Lucas who are arbitration eligible who likely will receive a hefty pay increase this year. Stop complaining the White Sox are cheap. They aren't. The Yankees also aren't spending money right now. The teams that are are doing it because they aren't as good as the White Sox were last year. The White Sox have a damn good team. The Rangers suck. And will likely be lucky to be in Third place next year. The White Sox will spend money but they need an upgrade, not a complete overhaul. And their payroll, when all is said and done, will almost be north of $200 million and likely be one of the top two in the AL. Because, given what Lucas will cost next year and also what some of the other arbitration eligible players will cost, there is just no way it won't be at $200 million or above. They are going to be in the top 2 in payroll in the AL. They don't have to spend money like drunken sailors. They will get one of the big fish in free agency, just like they did last year (Liam). But given the way the Sox operate, we likely won't find out till the day before it's done. Mets made some big upgrades and they still don't have as good a team as the White Sox.

White Sox sign Leury Garcia to 3 year deal

He's going to be a utility player. He's pretty valuable and bailed the Sox out last year and has shown the ability to come through in the clutch. I have no problem with them locking him up now. It would have become much more difficult after the lockout.
  12. I want Semien as much as the next person but we have a bigger need. We badly need a lefty Power hitter. Our right handed big bats got badly exposed in the playoffs. Thus I have a new free agent crush. Kyle Schwarber. This dude had a monster year last year and is capable of possibly having an MVP type season. Plus his versatility allows us to put him at DH, 1B, and in the outfield, which he's actually surprisingly solid. He's also just a dude that I think the fanbase would embrace. I would rather see us spend 4/85 on Schwarber and get Escobar or maybe even someone like McNeill than go all in on Semien and get stuck with a right handed power bat in the DH or outfield.

And also he needed a change of scenery.

Would you rather trade Eloy or Vaughn?

    Neither. Let's stop this foolishness.

    Sox give no qualifying offers

He had a decent first half. Really, the issues started in August when he couldn't get teh ball over the plate. If we get the guy from the first half, we will be fine. I also don't necessarily think this means Rodon is gone. The market value for Rodon is really unknown. But I think they didn't want to take the risk that he would take the $18 million, which I think is a safe bet. I can totally see them brinigng him back at $10 million with an option and a load of incentives. Due to his second half, he's likely going to have to take a prove it deal anyways. I also don't think this means they are being cheap either. If you can spend $24 million this off season, why waste $18 million on one player when you have a really good rotation as it is.

Could Sox have beat Red Sox and Braves?

Rodon was throwing 99 in his start against Houston. Who knows how he felt the next day but the reason he only last 3 innings wasn't his health.
  18. Harper himself said the White Sox pitch to him was surprisingly appealing and they were actually a really strong option for him.

Katz is arguably responsible for the success our starting staff had. Without him, I don't think Rodon and Cease have the years they do. Or even perhaps Lynn. Obviously he can get better but I'm not sure we are going to find a much better pitching coach for this staff than him. Also I can't blame him for the bullpen. Bullpen pitchers are volatile.

You came close with Eloy actually. Didn't go on the IL but missed some time. Homered in the second game.

    Rodon to get QO?

Worst comes to worst, we open with 6 starting pitchers and I'm fine with that.

    Offseason Thread

Goddamnit. I am doing a terrible job of taking a sabatical but I read some of this stuff in this thread and I have thoughts. 1) We don't need a fulltime catcher. We need a back up, and I would do everything I can to sign Maldonado for that, but Yasmani Grandal is a really good defensive catcher. He needs to get better at blocking pitches but his framing is excellent. And to be honest, the reason the Astros were able to run at will on him is not his fault but the fault of the pitchers. Pudge Rodriguez in his prime would not have been able to throw these runners out. The pitchers did such an awful job of holding them on. Ozzie pointed this out. The only pitcher it seems who is somewhat good at this is Keuchel. He works quickly and he has a pretty solid pickoff move. But the rest are really bad at this. They need to get better at it. 2) It would be awesome if we got Scherzer but I'm kind of torn about even trading Keuchel. Keuchel was atrocious but its very likely that we could see a bounce back year. Dude finished fifth in Cy Young voting in 2020. And had a solid first half. That being said, if they can find a suitor and get something back in value, I would do it. To be honest, I think adding another starting pitcher isn't a priority. These guys are who they were this season. And with more experience in the postseason, they will get better. 3) Eloy shouldn't be traded. This is such an overreaction. LaRussa actually got an A- from Fangraphs for his lineup construction in the playoffs. But I do think with Abreu and him, you should break them up in the order. Let's say we get someone like a McNeil (let me dream for a second), my lineup would be something like this. TA McNeil Abreu Luis Eloy Grandal Moncada Sheets Vaughn Eloy's struggles this year were pretty bad but Dude is a bonafide superstar. 4) I think the White Sox should stop looking at the AL Central and look at the Astros as their Northstar or their bullies. In the same way we did with the Twins in 05, how can we make ourselves a little like the Astros. How can we gain that killer edge? How can we match up better with them. It's a small signing but Maldonado would be huge. He's a veteran who can likely impart a lot of wisdom onto some of these younger players, especially during the postseason. 5) Change up the coaching staff. La Russa isn't going anywhere and quite frankly, nor should he. And Katz and Cairo are both really good. But like the rest of the coaching staff is basically what we had with Ventura and Renteria. Tony has talked about leaning a lot on his coaching staff in St. Louis. A lot of these guys aren't very good. Also Menechino, if he doesn't go, is on a short leash. There's probably not a chance in hell they could get Cintron from Houston but someone like him would be amazing. Anyways, I'll try and get back to my sabbatical.

I'm going to break my own sabbatical and throw out a name that I really like that I think provides the Sox a lot of balance and he can play multiple positions. He's also someone who just might be available if the Mets do resign Baez, which I think is likely. Jeff McNeill. He had a crappy year last year but dude has been pretty damn good both at hitting for average, getting on base, not striking out, and also plays multiple positions. He also has enough pop to hit 23 home runs and that will likely increase if he played half his games at Comiskey. Just throwing this out there. I don't know if he will be available or not but I'm a huge fan having watched him a fair bit in New York. Rumor has it the Mets were in on Kimbrel. To be honest, I think McNeill is a much a better version of Nick MAdrigal. Again, not sure how likely it is that he's on the market but I would check in to see if he's available. Diaz was a high wire act down the stretch for them anyways. And even if it's not Kimbrel who they trade for him, I'm wondering if the Sox might have enough to amke it work.

    Looking back and forward

This is gonna be last post for a bit jsut because after this whole playoff run, I need a break from baseball. But I will say I think part of our disappointment is that this has never happened before. This was the Sox first back to back postseason appearances in franchise history. And maybe outside of 06 or after the 08 season, we aren't really conditioned for this. The fact is, we have a really amazing core group of players who are young and who are only going to get better. And we play in a division that quite frankly won't have a team ready to really do serious damage against us for another few years. The team absolutely needs some additions but I think we can win the World Series next year. I would really like to see us go after Semien at 2nd base. I'm very willing to let Vaughn compete for a job in RF and have Sheets be the DH. But Semien at 2nd base would be a game changer. And resign Tepeara. Kimbrel, I'm up in the air on largely because I think he showed his real self in the last week of the season and in Game 4. It's pretty fucking obvious to anyone who was watching that Tony used him pretty badly in Game 2 and in this game (He should have had a clean inning). But $18 million is a lot to pay a set up man. That being said, I think this team will be very competitive next year.
