    Breaking News.......

    QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 01:25 PM) 1. I am fat. 2. I am going to lose weight starting now. 3. I have done it before so I know I can do it again. 4. NSS,molto, and Jason can hold me to it seeing they see me on a regular basis. 5. I am hungry already. I take it you've gained a lot of weight since you started EATING those ice cream sandwiches?
  2. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) SHOCKING...just absolutely f***ing shocking. I know, right? I'm buying a dishwasher tomorrow.
  3. Looking back... http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=56 I f***ed up.
  4. QUOTE (wilmot825 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) Where's the Sportscenter coverage of that??? Manny got coverage everytime he took a piss and wiped his ass. Sry I had to vent that. Good for Carlos. Manny is perhaps the greatest run-producer of our generation and tested positive for steriods. Quentin had injury issues before 2008, had one good season only to end it with another injury, returns the next year, plays subpar, and promptly gets hurt again. His rehab stint is hardly newsworthy on a national level. As for his return ... I really doubt he'll make much of an impact, especially if he can't run, seeing that you're only risking losing him into next season.
  5. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 09:31 AM) My actual first post on what would become SoxTalk doesn't exist anymore. I think the few people that date back to the SoxNet days lost all of their earliest history with the first Soxtalk migration. I do remember that my first post on the mlb Sox board was quite similar to NSS's first post here, telling people not to panic during an extended team slump. Of course that was in 2001 and we did suck a$$ right out of the gate that year, so, that shows what I know. I'm sure mine was something along the lines of "TEST."
  6. While I don't post, this is the first time since Jason and myself started this board that I've had no interest in reading the palehose talk forum. We're talking 7-8 years here, where the Sox have had some rough rides. Knighni's analogy was spot on, and lostfan is right as well that you're taking the bullet points way too literally. There is nothing wrong with being negative, or posting in losing threads 2% more than winning threads. Or saying you're right, but there is a limit to everything. Professional baseball is not everything. It isn't life. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure the players aren't as ticked off as some of the posters here.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) That I agree with. But Hawk is making it sound as if it is some unwritten rule that you don't do what Scotty is doing and I don't see whats wrong with it. I agree, although I also agree that if he keeps having success, pitchers will throw inside on him. Not as retaliation, but just to make him think twice. If this is going to make him successful, it's in the pitchers best interest to stop him from doing it. Throwing inside may do that.
  8. If it's because the Sox don't want to pick up the option, it's not a bad thing. If a guy who's making millions needs a more millions to play in a league he doesn't want to play in, then it's a good thing. Why would you want a player whose only reason for being on your team is extra cash?
  9. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Like an extra point and a half on his ERA once he leaves Petco and comes to the AL at the cell? But we'll be losing all that money to pay him, so it washes out.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 21, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) He'll be making 17 million guaranteed no matter what in 3 years anyway. It's a lot of money, but if you want a true ace, that's the price you have to pay now a days. That's only if you're confident he'll be a true ACE with the Sox, and four years from now at that.
  11. To guarantee $22 million four years from now is pretty stupid for any pitcher, let alone one coming from the NL. If they end up agreeing to it, I just hope Peavy wants it more so he knows he'll be in Chicago for an extra year, rather than strictly for the extra cash.
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) So you dislike Poreda, because his mechanics remind you of that of both Liriano and Wood, two pitcher who have/had demonstrated that they were fantastic talents at the major league level, who both pitched their teams into playoff, and went down with an injury for a variety of reasons, one of which was being horribly overworked? I’ll take some Wood-like years from Poreda. Reading can be fun. I never said Poreda reminding me of Liriano and Wood. caufield was asking me about guys I've seen pitch who I wasn't fond of mechanically. Liriano and Wood were two guys, not two guys who remind me of Poreda.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) And you had the same impressions about Brandon McCarthy's erratic/herky-jerky delivery in 2003-2005 I'm assuming? After seeing Danks, I was VERY happy with that trade. McCarthy's delivery is herky-jerky, as you say, but I wouldn't say I had the same impressions with him.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:42 PM) I think he is a pen guy as well, I dont see how he can have a repeatable plus breaking ball with that delivery. I think he become a sinker/slider guy out of the pen. Yeah, I think there is a possibility for him to be a fastball/slider guy out of the pen. Unfortunately though, relievers just naturally don't have long shelf lives, although if things keep going as they've been, we'll relievers whose specialty is to come in and throwing just a single pitch a game.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) Did you also have the same feeling about Gio Gonzalez or Faustino DeLosSantos? Second, what pitcher have you seen in our system that you DO like their mechanics/delivery? Have you seen any of the Kannapolis starters in person or on t.v.? Two guys I was pretty loud about when it came to their future health when they first broke the bigs, and a few can back me on this, were Wood and Liriano.
  16. Didn't care for Gonzalez, can't say I've ever seen De Los Santos, so I'd be lying if I say I did. I saw Poreda pitch on TV. Can't think of anyone in our system (at least by name) that I was fine with. I think it's easier to get a feeling for a pitcher rather than a hitter. You can watch a hitter bat an entire game and a good game could very well hide some flaws. But pitching, at least for me, is easier to pick apart in a smaller sample.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) Nope, comparing Poreda to Wells, although I think the expectations for Kip were even higher, especially at that time period where even the likes of Snyder and Parque looked really good compared to 1998. I guess your thinking is that he is a sure-fire bust...well, only KW knows if that's the consensus viewpoint of the rest of the organization, but we certainly have to find another GM that believes the opposite of you with just as much conviction. With everything being so modernized, I'm sure they have diagnostic computerized simulation programs that can determine exactly the torque on the elbow and shoulder that any given motion produces. One would think they could smooth or straighten out his mechanics and maintain his velocity, unless that velocity resulted from performance-enhancing drugs, which we have no reason to believe. There was definitely more expectations for Wells. I don't like Poreda for his mechanics, others don't like him because he has only one pitch. In Wells case, he was right physically and had good stuff. Mentally was his issue, which a lot of the times you never know until they hit the majors.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:33 PM) These guys have been the best player around them for their entire life, they've been told by people around them how good they were. I dont blame them for being stubborn really. Of course the first time he failed at the big league level should have been a wakeup, apparently it wasnt. You're right. Unfortunately, some players are developed to perform where they're at rather than the next level. It's why a guy like Anderson comes up and has a long, hole-filled swing. It worked in the minors with lesser quality pitchers who will miss out over the plate.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) Kip Wells came up and pitched "well" under no pressure and then quickly collapsed when expectations were placed on him in 2000. We've had pitchers like Felix Diaz, Jon Adkins and Nick Masset lose 5 MPH before they ever made it to Chicago based on false hype, but Poreda has a legit fastball for now. Are you saying that because you think his delivery is not as repeatable or as smooth as Matt Thornton's? Conjecture? Simply the fact that the White Sox pitchers with the least hype (Buehrle and Fogg) ended up having much better results than many "top" prospects? The whole reason for him to fail is because of his secondary pitches at this moment in time? Just curious how many times you have watched him. I've watched him a few times, which is enough for me to gauge a pitchers delivery. Not having a secondary pitch doesn't help, of course.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) Kip Wells came up and pitched "well" under no pressure and then quickly collapsed when expectations were placed on him in 2000. I'm not sure why you are talking about Wells, unless you are comparing him to Beckham. I don't think much of Poreda, therefore I don't think he'll do much at the major league level, so I'd rather that become a fact sooner rather than later. Unless he's future trade bait. Then keep him down.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:02 PM) What makes you think he loses 5 clicks int he next two years? He has a forced fastball, in my opinion. I don't think his arm will take much major league mileage. Of course, it's all moot if he's changed since spring training, but I doubt it.
  22. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) nah, he's no gold glove but awful is too strong. he's made the routine plays and made a couple of really nice throws, especially for him. But I do like his speed too. Might be a better backup out there than weezy. I agree, at least from what I've seen. He's looked more comfortable in center than he ever did in left.
  23. QUOTE (knightni @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) That's clearly a doctored photo...
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Kip Wells came up and had relative success in 1999 and it put a lot of pressure on him to be the savior of the rotation in 2000...so it goes both ways. Thankfully, we had Sirotka, Baldwin, Eldred, Parque and Garland to fill in the breach, as well as a young Mark Buehrle. Beckham's OPS is around 830. It's not like he has been destroying the ball down there....and, of course, he is just coming back from an abdominal injury. Not to mention the fact that he's had his struggles defensively, just like Viciedo. That Barons team needs to win a championship together and bring their enthusiasm and winning attitude/confidence to the big leagues...instead of being split up and brought to Charlotte or promoted to the Sox. We don't need them to be infected by the current malaise that is Charlotte/Chicago. Not sure I understand your first part. I don't much care for Poreda. He'll be a reliever at best, and that's assuming he doesn't lose 5mph in the next two years, which I suspect he will. So I'd rather him come up and show he can't do it sooner rather than later, so there is time to look for other options. As for Beckham, I'm talking mentally. He appears mature enough that he'll be able to handle coming up sooner, but there is no point to it.
  25. Not that he's young and has a good chance to make any sort of impact at the major league level, but he needs to look in the mirror one day, maybe hop on a scale too, and realize that what's keeping him from staying in the big leagues isn't his inability to hit the ball out of the park, but his regular attempts to hit the ball out of the park. He may be one of the dumbest hitters I've ever seen.
