  1. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) adkins? you've got to be kidding me. He's worse than horrible. Leads the International League in home runs allowed. Baj or Tracey and Diaz or Munoz deserved it over him. Don't get that one at all. once again, as a starter. if you watched him pitch last year or in spring training, he's deserving of being up in the bullpen more than anyone else down there.
  2. ADKINS IS NOT A STARTER. Putting him in AAA as a starter was a bad move, which is why he's struggled so much. Put him in the pen and he'll produce the same he did for the Sox last season. They need a long reliever.
  3. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 12:57 PM) DID CARL GET INJURED??? COULD WE HAVE JUST MADE A TRADE DEALING EVERETT??? he was ejected.
  4. he was a top story there earlier this season.
  5. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 08:29 AM) oh ok....its a common misperception today, about 10 years ago the neighborhood was really rough, in the past 3 years its gotten better and in about 10 years its going to be considered a nice part of town again. i think it gets a bum rap from out of towners because of the reputation that it once had, but they arent around enough to realize the improving changes in the area I've lived here my whole life and I don't remember it ever being rough. It has always been a perception.
  6. I would have to agree with the whole idea of placing Everett on the DL, but because Thomas has just made his way back and may still get hurt again, I don't see that happening before Monday (interleague). Hernandez will likely be pitching this weekend against the Indians. I would move Garland's start up to Friday, seeing that he struggled his last start and should go back to a four-days rest, and have Hernandez pitch Saturday between Garland and Buehrle. You have Hernandez replace Walker and then bring up Gload Monday and place Everett on the DL. When Everett gets back, you drop Timo. I'm not so sure about demoting Takatsu. If they were though, I'd prefer to see Adkins again, but since for some strange reason he's starting down in AAA (he's starting down there, right?) that won't happen.
  7. While Guillen could relax a bit, like 90% of managerial decisions, he could've gone either way. he chose to take him out, it didn't work. Guillen was probably pissed because the media, like fans, are trying to go back on s*** and see what was the mistake. when a mistake is made, fine, but pulling McCarthy wasn't a bad call at all. Vizcaino, who I think will be a quality reliever when it's all said and done, simply didn't get it done.
  8. For those of you who have listened to the podcast show I have on 360thePitch, we've changed the show up a bit, with this week being the first try at it. For those who have never heard it, it's basically a baseball podcast show called The Mario & Jeff Show. We've done like 10 shows already (once a week). Check it out, download, listen and get back to me with any feedback. Keep in mind that I put this in the Around the Horn forum and not Pale Hose Talk, so it's not a White Sox show, although since we are both Sox fans, we naturally have some bias towards them. Next week (yes, I'm planning to spam this board every week with this) we will have a flash player set up so you will be able to listen to it in a few seconds without waiting for it to download. Until then, click on this link and download it (it'll take like 5 min, unfortunately) CLICK THIS LINK http://www.360thepitch.com/upload/radio/fr...eff05-11-05.mp3 Once again, all feedback is welcome. TO ADMINS/MODS: I'm pinning this topic. Feel free to unpin when you feel it's best to do so.

    Closer

closer is by far the most overrated position in baseball. use both and things will be all right.
  10. three infielders banged up but none serious to warrant time on the DL so a replacement can be brought up ... very weird.
  11. QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 26, 2005 -> 09:39 PM) Mario ... if Froemming is in position, it's a damn lot easier to see Kotsay's foot didn't touch the plate. From where Froemming was at - out of position - yeah you're right it wasn't obvious. He's in a bad spot and makes the homer call. And the wrong call. Pablo walks. even if he has the best angle it's still a close call when you don't have the benefit of instant replay. a blown call to me is something obvious when seen live.
  12. it was a close play ... it isn't like it was obvious. you can blame him for being out of position but not for making the call ... it wasn't obvious.
  13. let's not forget Buehrle getting knocked around...
  14. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 08:53 AM) Is anyone in that pen better at this point? Right now he is most capable and I think the job should be his until he proves otherwise. if this team MUST have a closer at this point in time, because of Shingo's struggles, then yes, it should be Hermanson, but I don't think they should name anybody the closer. It's a bulls*** role that only a few teams in the majors can actually fill. It's like the five-man rotation. It was never used and then all of sudden a couple teams form it and are effective with it and then all of sudden every team needs a fifth guy, with about half of them barely having a fourth starter.
  15. That wouldn't bother me, but I'd personally rather go the route of no closer. Hermanson is good, but he isn't lights out, which is what I want from a closer. IMO, if you don't have one of the best, go at it by situation.
  16. Crede's swing is still a big problem. The good thing is that he's improved on his approach. Unlike the past, he isn't digging himself into 0-2 counts by swinging at bad pitches and taking ones right down the middle. He's putting himself in good situations and is making the most out of it, and even though his swing still has issues, he's talented enough to overcome it. The way he's going out with his at bats now, if he keeps this up, he'll have a solid season. If he fixes his swing to go with it, he can be a big surprise.
  17. closer by committee is such a dumb term that people use for every bullpen situation in which you don't have a set closer. when I think closer by committee, I think the team isn't sure and will just let whoever is hot take over the job. that's usually done by a team that has no relievers whatsoever, and as a result, usually fails. in this case what Guillen will be doing is going by the situation, which means Marte, Hermanson and Takatsu will all be getting chances to close, pending the batters due up for the opposing team, or, if someone like Vizcaino works a quick eighth, he can go ahead and finish out the ninth. I'm very happy with this as I think a lot of teams should be going this route instead of having a pretend closer finish out games even though the matchups for them in the ninth are absolutely horrible.
  18. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 01:01 PM) Sound eerily similar to last year's team. Ozzieball..............no. it wasn't so much the numbers but the approach. last year, it was all-or-nothing swings. this season, you actually see them not purposely trying to hit the ball 500 feet. when looking at the numbers, you'll notice every game is a close game. we aren't scoring 10-12 runs and then 1 and we aren't winning by 8 and then losing by 2. unfortunately, a lot of dumb people are going to look at those numbers and take the same stance you took.
  19. I'm gonna take a guess and say as soon as Garland gives up a hit or a walk, there are going to be a select few idiots who are going to put it on him being a "girl" and having no heart. He's looking really good right now.
  20. this is without question the dumbest thread since the start of the season. blaming Crede for trying to stop a groundball from going into the outfield? wow, this is just dumb. if you were to think Crede sucks, I'd rather you just post "Crede sucks" than something like this, which is nitpicking "I'm trying to find a way to blame it on a guy who I don't like despite him doing nothing wrong" bulls***. Buehrle wasn't at his best and Santana was simply awesome. that's all that needs to be said.
  21. That's usually because the bullpen by committee is first, an idiotic thing to do, second, it usually means you have no quality relievers. By leaving a guy like Hermanson in for the ninth after he pitches the eighth isn't a bad thing in a three-run game, especially after you waisted three relievers for no reason whatsoever the inning before. I'm not agreeing with the point of the thread, just saying why leaving in Hermanson wouldn't be a bad thing. Personally, I would've never used three relievers in the seventh, because that is now a problem with Garland down there.
  22. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Apr 7, 2005 -> 03:02 PM) Dustin Hermanson looked great in the 8th. Ozzie lifted him just because Takatsu is the "closer." I've never understood that mentality. I mean, if you have Rivera or Gagne, fine, but no one else should get that automatic call, IMO. This is not a second guess. I was thinking this when Shingo came out there for the ninth. Now the game is tied and I'm not sure what pitchers are left if they need extra innings. Maybe Vizcaino. Hopefully we can win it in the bottom of the ninth so it won't matter. While I agree with you as I'm completely against having a "closer," this game was messed up in the seventh when Guillen used three pitchers, and then a fourth in the eighth inning. He can't just expect Takatsu is going to finish the game without question. You have to leave a couple relievers in the pen.
  23. QUOTE(AirScott @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 03:42 PM) Rowand didn't say a single word about the team from last year, so this Carol Slezak is just trying to start something...I have really only heard good things in the past about Valentin, Mags, and Lee in terms of clubhouse presence. in fact, since Valentin has no other marketable skills, he'd better be a good clubhouse guy, or he'd have been out on his ass. Rowand's quote hinted that. If Rowand believes nobody from last year's team was selfish, he wouldn't have said, "I can honestly say that about guys 1 through 25. Not one guy is worried about his stats. We're only worried about winning.'' Rowand was talking about the team and what he likes about it. If last year's team was full of team players, then he would've mentioned the change to speed, defense and not the team attitude, because what is the big deal if everyone is a team player if it didn't work the year before? He also tipped his hat to KW for bringing these kind of guys in here. As opposed to the guys we had prior?
  24. I don't think there was anything wrong for them to mention Lee, Ordonez and Valentin. Should they have said ... "guys who weren't necessarily into the team concept."? No, that was stretching it, but pointing out which players are gone is fine by me considering what Rowand said. Now, had they of written a big long piece off of Rowand's comments, yeah, that would've been sad, but what the writer did wasn't as bad as you guys are making it seem. Talk about making something out of nothing.
  25. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Mar 27, 2005 -> 09:47 PM) The steroid conversation was pretty good. I agree with the things you guys said about Bonds. The story on Helton was funny; Hagen is definitely saying two different things in that situation. I agree with the comment about the change on the offense. The media’s definitely blowing this out of proportion. The media didn’t care about the power when we had it, why do they care now? The Hawk impression… I agree with your sentiments on a lot of the position players. I’m really nervous about what Crede’s going to do this year too. I’m trying to stay optimistic on the guy, but I’m really not confident on his future in Chicago. You guys brought up some interesting points about Garland; I really like the guy, and he does get a bad rap. Contreras does seem to be the key to the Sox going places. It’s a big question mark about what we’re going to get out of him this year. I like the Dane Cook intermission …and Jason getting some love --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I really liked the show. You guys did a good job breaking down the Sox, and it's always great hearing something about the Sox. Especially since we never get noticed by the media, nationally, or in the city we play in, Chicago. thanks, I really appreciate the feedback. we are going to breakdown the Cubs next week. I'm sure plenty here will be dying to hear that...
