They're basically going to use the hotel tax at 2% that ISFA uses. I could see them increasing that to 3% even which isn't taxing residents. With that stated, you build that stadium, you also expect to have a lot more hotel tenants with the events lining up such as Final Four for men's and women's, Wrestlemania, Super Bowl, International Soccer, and Olympics (I see them bidding in the next 3 cycles). It could work.

Yep. And I'm happy for that. Force JR's hand.

But what happens if the hotel tax revenue is short and the Sox and or Bears stadium relies on that revenue? I have to think taxes will be coming from the infrastructure that would be needed unless that came from the capital projects law Pritzker signed.

I do enjoy the lakefront for a Bears game. But I fear what @Kyyle23 posted is true. It will be an ugly half ass dome.

Wish it could be a retractable roof.

Meh, it’s cool. But it’s not worth the taxpayer dollars given the financial situation of the state and Chicago.

Isn't here like half a billion dollars of unpaid debt still left on the Soldier Filed renovations? How are they going to make that debt magically disappear?

Yes. Budget gimmicks. They might have mentioned how at the press conference today, but I haven’t seen the financials yet.

As a current out of state fan I was ripped for having that point of view. I believe now it's a local decision and whatever the voters decide is fine with me. But rewarding this franchise with another stadium annoys me.

Especially when there is nothing wrong with the facility they have aside from not maximizing profits with a neighborhood around the stadium.

Oh, absolutely I think a new Sox owner would want the team to play at the South Loop site instead of being locked in long-term at Guaranteed Rate Field in an area that just doesn't draw much visitors outside of attending a baseball game.  Catering to fans who want a ballpark surrounded by a sea of parking lots isn't working out and isn't a good business model going forward.

My guess is that if the team was sold in the next year or two (let's say Jerry suddenly passes) and The 78 lot was still available, they'd find a way to come up with $1B or so in private funding to make that ballpark happen because they realize that would boost market share and revenue for this team plus give a huge boost to the value of the franchise.

As far as whether a new owner would move them out of state.  I wouldn't say the chances of it are zero.  The other markets don't compare to Chicago now, but they are booming.  What if the new owner has roots in North Carolina or San Antonio?  It's not implausible that they'd buy the team and move it to their home state.  Utah has given the green light to spend $900M in public funds toward a new MLB stadium - do people really think that there isn't a buyer out there who wouldn't jump at the chance to play there instead of being the forgotten stepchild in Chicago being forever overshadowed by the Cubs and playing at what will soon be a 40-year old generic ballpark with not much around it?

Then the Sox should be prepared to not have fans in the middle class attend games either on a regular basis or at all. Those tailgating lots and parking spots make all of the difference for affordability to go to games. If they went to the loop and didn’t have much parking, they would need to ensure more fans attend games and that richer fans/more corporate types made going to Sox games a regular thing.

I believe it was here I read where a competent owner and management team was put into place, the Sox would be a goldmine. I have to agree, we dont necessarily need a new park as bad as we need a new owner

Going against the cubs is a formidable task no doubt. But everything is cyclomatic (if thats even a word) and we've been #2 for a long long time. Time we changed that.

BTW how are local cub fans reacting to this yrs Sox? I really cant say they have been too condescending in these parts, maybe they feel sorry for us?? (cant be!)

Cubs fans have seen the record but there’s no need to be condescending. It’s clear the Sox suck and we have a crappy owner. I think the Cubs and Sox rivalry over the years has kind of died down now that both franchises have won a World Series.

Looking at the Bears presentation, the stadium looks nice. No new taxes. Replacing existing Soldier Field with pure green space. I think the Bears beat the Sox to it.

There will be taxes of some kind. They haven’t even approached the state or had anything voted on yet.

They absolutely do and has been written about recently in Sports Illustrated the betting now is on them getting an expansion franchise headed by minority ownership in former pitcher Dave Stewart and his group which has Tony LaRussa as a advisor. The story said they have already had meetings with Manfred and laid out specific plans on how the franchise would be run and that the majority of key positions would be filled by minority individuals which would please MLB.

Better hope it is just an expansion team.

  6. 4 hours ago, Lip Man 1 said:

As has been pointed out the expansion cities talked about don't come close to the opportunities offered by the Chicago area. Not even close.

There is tremendous untapped potential here if a new owner would build a good organization.

    3 hours ago, Rusty said:

Not only do the other proposed cities make zero sense financially.  MLB owners will absolutely block any attempt by the Sox to ever move out of Chicago.  Revenue sharing is a thing, Chicago is the 3rd largest media market in the league, and if the Sox ever did leave the Cubs, Milwaukee, and StL would block any future expansion into the market.  Zero percent chance the Sox leave regardless of what Jerry wants you to believe.

The most likely scenario is they work out a deal with the city/state for a new ballpark and Reinsdorf leaves the team to his son.

I hope you are all right and that anyone who thinks JR or the new owner will move the team are wrong.

    2 hours ago, Texsox said:

While I know a lot of folks here only watch White Sox baseball and would give up  baseball if the Sox moved, a whole lot more fans would eventually slide over to the north side because they love baseball and Chicago. While a great Yankee type franchise would rule this city, reality is as a mediocre second tier franchise they would do fine in some new market that is starved for a major sports team.  There may be a small slip in revenue from Chicago, but the league will make it up with a new market. They will have an excuse for not being competitive and life goes on. They may be the next Philadelphia/KC/Oakland/nameless Athletics.

I have thought about if the Sox moved if I would need to be a Cubs fan by default to enjoy some baseball. I would not get the same attachment to them as I did the White Sox. There is no family history on the north side (except for my wife who is a Cubs fan) and my family grew up on the south side. I couldn’t do it.

4 minutes ago, Green Line said:

The Cubs have no dedicated parking yet thousands of people drive to their games every day.  The majority are not taking the red line.  If people want to drive, the market will take care of it.  Plenty of private lots will spring up…  if there is money to be made, somebody will figure it out.

this is not a legit concern.

Parking at GRF is one of the easy things about going to the game. I can park and tailgate there and then go to a game for an affordable price. I can’t say the same at Wrigley. Wrigley’s concourse is a b**** to get around as well.

    There was also this part

I wonder what a buyer thinks of Guaranteed Rate Field and doesn’t think their current home works for the White Sox and fans. I also wonder if a buyer would move them out of the state, or if we should be more concerned with JR threatening moving out of the state.

The Bears must have some sort of unofficial deal with the Mayor to stay in the city rather than move to Arlington Heights.  The Mayor must’ve given in to some of their demands.

He may have, but this would only be a tentative agreement. I would have to go back to the Sox stadium thread for the financials, but what we know is they still owe on Soldier Field, Pritzker is not warming on the idea to financing anything but infrastructure to the new stadium and they were using an existing tax to try and get funding for the new stadium. The Bears and Sox both were supposed to provide proposals for public funding so how would this agreement with the city impact the Sox? Lots of questions remain unanswered…and nothing is set in stone until the ink dries and construction begins.

I really hope this the case.

Have teams forfeited picks to other teams or have they just forfeited picks and foregone their draft position? The latter is what I was thinking.

Haven't been active on here for years. Usually read the threads when I'm not logged in.

My friend and I joined Soxtalk a long time ago and we were recently talking about the history of this website. Can anyone give a quick summary of the website's history and who started this awesome forum and how it got started and gained traction?

My profile shows that I joined in 2003, but under a different name I joined with earlier. I remember the poster that Jason mentioned as well as SoxNet and Sox N Roll. I had been posting on the whitesox.com forums where posters like CWSox and Hot Sox Chick were, but found out about this site and posted here instead of WSI. What was cool about this site is that I was given the ability to write since I was interested in sports journalism at the time.

This site has led to some interesting outings with posters in real life (Quickman and JimH) through a connection my dad had, as well as meeting some other posters (Steff? and others at a game in 2004 or 2005). It’s had fun threads like “Mother Fucking b**** Ass Passionless White Sox,” informative forums like the main forum and Sex, Lies and Politics.😂

I have learned a lot from posters over the years here and continue to learn about advanced stats in baseball from people here. It’s real cool to see the site evolve and a privilege to come to a cool place to talk, read or b**** about White Sox baseball.

  11. Given their inability to score runs, is it a bad idea to literally get someone on, bunt someone over and use two outs to try and manufacture one run? Then again they need people to get on without an out or get on period… Every single game I turn on the at bats are brutal. I think I saw a swing by Fletcher where he was way late with his swing last night. At least when DeJong is up I feel better about him actually getting a hit worth a damn.

Still pissed we traded him. Loved his story, that he was from the STL area, and he was an easy guy to root for that smashes baseballs. Will never forgive Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams for this!

I just did not understand the rationale for trading Burger. Is it that they were risking him becoming injury prone again or that his power hitting was going away? Was it just that he was getting too old and they needed to get starting pitching? Or that they wanted to have a fire sale to replenish the farm?

This is also the 2nd team that has said "You're very good but it's time to move on."

As he gets older, starting to think he may not be worth the trouble. He's going to what seems like a fantastic situation in Houston, but given the cost, plus I believe he has an opt out after this year if he wants, I actually prefer the Allen deal the Bears executed on than the 2nd rounder it cost for Diggs.

Looks like the Texans voided the last few years of Diggs’ deal and paid him some additional salary this year to try and give him an incentive to play for a new contract.

They’re going to need innings this year.

Exactly, or at least they will need starting pitchers. They can’t just start relievers.

That's what Bryan Shaw is for

He doesn’t start though. The rotation is basically dog s%*# and they need more than just a few guys with starting experience. They also need to build a starting rotation in the coming years.

  16. Sign Carl Edwards Jr. to the active roster and have him pitch behind Crochet or the number 5 starter as relief for the opener. Then trade him at the deadline if he’s worth anything or release him if he sucks.

These tickets are available for purchase for season ticket holders

I remember seeing them on stubhub, with a note you also need a regular game ticket to enter the stadium, but I don't see any listed so far for the couple of games I checked. They weren't listed with expensive on stubhub for most games, IIRC $10-$15 per ticket. Hopefully they didn't change the policy to allow resale.

I never was inside the Stadium Club, but would be cool to check it out. I like the Club Level especially with sketchy weather, being able to sit out a rain delay in warmth. Also like viewing the game from that level around the infield, vs. the upper deck where I won't go anymore. You can typically find decent to great prices for club seats for weekday day games and weeknight (M-Th) games in April, May and September.

I saw the note about the season ticket holders and thought that there were tickets on StubHub. I thought it might be a unique place to take my wife for a Sox game. The Club Level is awesome for when the weather sucks and from a viewing experience. I’ll go to the upper deck behind the plate on the lower rows so you can see everything. Otherwise I’ll search for good priced tickets by the dugout or in the outfield.
