How is one guy’s opinion so popular? And how is that network so popular when people often cite their talking heads? I don’t get it.

I’m a moderate and there’s no way I’m breaking from the left nationally. What exactly was CHAZ/CHOP about? Statues don’t really bother me, especially if they are confederate statues. I wonder how the polls are so inaccurate. People are just lying? Pollsters have to somehow know if someone is lying by the answers to questions.

The sad part is that after what happened in 2016, I can still see it happening.

And yet southern Illinois is fighting back against the governor’s order. I bet masks aren’t being worn well down south.

    COVID-19/Coronavirus thread

Automation is going to be tough on the economy. It’s part of one of the reasons I went back to get some modern skills even though I’m no expert. (And if I don’t succeed, I’m definitely considering healthcare or web development down the road.) But what is important is coming up with a product that helps employees do their jobs. Or figuring out what to do with employees. I don’t think it necessarily will be retraining or UBI, but I don’t know. It’s going to be a complex issue if jobs get automated away. You are right to pursue something that you can apply to your interests. I see more of a future with healthcare data, so that is one other reason to leave my company, in addition to what I previously mentioned. It all depends on the opportunities available though. You are also right about communication, although I am a rookie at this stuff and I wish people would teach more rather than assuming I know this stuff. It’s all about speaking up, pushing back and collaborating. My concern is also that because I am new, I will get into a role and they will become impatient with me if I don’t catch on initially, but I have a feeling they would give warnings and training before they would fire me. They being a hypothetical employer. Best of luck to you in your program and if you want, PM me and we can connect on LinkedIn. There is so much to learn in terms of data visualization, statistics, data analysis and machine learning, in addition to programming. Luckily it is rare that there is a unicorn who does that all well and opportunities will present themselves for those with a background. I hope.

All over the place and I may go to school in the future for something unrelated if this doesn’t work out. I graduated with a business degree and have worked in HR, marketing and insurance so far. If the company pays for some of the graduate degree, I would say it is worth it. I think learning programming at a boot camp or getting a graduate degree that is in data science is worthwhile. Software development seems to have less of a barrier to understand, although you may find it easier to grasp data science with a quantitative background. Feel free to take this to PMs if you want to discuss there instead.

Feel free to take this to PMs if you would like to. What program did you get into? Is work paying? The fact that you know SQL and Python is huge. A lot of the people in my program (like me) don’t have a background in it and that makes a learning curve tough. I am coming at the field completely blind, other than having industry knowledge in insurance. I wanted to go for a graduate degree and see what happened with it since my company paid for most of it. The tough thing is, I’m not in the same state as my employer where large offices are and it is tough to learn from people remotely. I am working to get on different projects at work so I can practice what I have learned, but they are often slow moving and occasionally, there aren’t lots of people who like to teach or help you develop that are on the teams that are involved with the project. So while my program was great, I am having a hard time trying to apply it to work. We will see what happens but my options could open up at the end of the month when I don’t owe my company anything and can look around or look internally at other departments that are tied to data science but don’t necessarily work in it and still involve data analysis. Programming is amazing, especially when work can be automated and people could be doing more productive things with their time. Creating tools with programming and data science is really cool.

Good luck with the Data Science masters program. To me it is like a modern MBA. It definitely isn’t easy stuff and getting experience in it can be somewhat of a challenge. I’ve lived through the program and am grateful my company paid for it so I could attempt using it for a job change.

And yet Planet Fitness has opened in Illinois and my account will probably be charged. I want to go and lift but I can’t be positive that I can trust everyone else who is lifting shared weights to not have COVID-19. I wish they would let me freeze my membership instead of having me cancel it for the time being.

First of all, given the level of classes he is at and the likelihood of success with that kind of STEM mind, I think he will be successful. Is it fair that you fault the district and not necessarily the teachers? If so, that is fair. If not, and you blame the teachers, that isn’t entirely fair. They had close to zero time to prepare for online learning. I would agree that video classrooms throughout the day would be better than online exams and homework, but I don’t know if that is up to the district, the school or the department. As far as the pass/fail, I think that was mandated by the state if I remember what my wife said correctly. If not, then it had to be the district. I would much rather kids get punished for cheating and take some accountability or actually do their homework, when many of them didn’t until the last few weeks and begged to have their grades rounded up. I don’t really know who should be at fault to be honest. But I don’t necessarily think it is the teachers who were at fault in the spring. I would agree with you that some sort of effective plan needs to be in place for the fall, with zoom calls, staggered classes by kids in each level, four day weeks or a hybrid approach being in place. I can also appreciate a father like you caring about his son’s education. At least you provided some good reasons rather than the usual garbage I see on social media thrown at teachers, usually without any rational, coherent thoughts.

Let me ask you this. Whose fault is it for the experience your son has had? The teachers, the administrators or someone else? Because it damn well better not be the teachers with what they are working with.

No need to be angry about it and blame the teachers for the online learning (unless you blame administrators and Pritzker). I never said the bolded either. Every school is a bit different, the math classes require retakes for a better grade and the teachers clearly know when they are cheating. If school continues, the kids better wear masks and be social distanced away from each other. I’m not sure how sports will be handled either. We’ll see what Illinois does.

My wife is a high school teacher and we have been left wondering what to do. It seems tough trying to have everyone to go back at once without a staggered start, or starting in person and doing an online component. I don’t think we can trust the kids to wear masks, be socially distanced in classrooms and expect teachers to wear face shields. I think they might be going to school to start but the bulk of the first semester may be at home online. Then maybe when the vaccine comes out then in person classes will resume.

It seems odd that he is holding campaign rallies during a pandemic and wants to slow testing down. No matter how he spins things, COVID-19 is going to be an issue in America even after the election and it is impacting people who are vulnerable. I can’t support the approach he has taken with the virus as of late and how he shows a complete disregard for science and that community. I can criticize him fairly, even though I know he only cares about his base and not moderate independents like me.

BNSF is a great line to take in. Check out homes in Woodridge, Lombard, Bolingbrook, Westmont or Downers Grove. It can’t hurt to see what is available with how easy the commute is if she’s taking the train in (there are direct rides to the city in rush hour).
