  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 21, 2010 -> 07:49 PM) Here's a few more that missed: Is this an adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House? Because I freaking love that book. Shirley Jackson is amazing.
  2. Ugh, I can't believe I forgot to put Shaun of the Dead on my list. Love it.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) There are pretty much no words for how vile this mess has been. Here's some background reading if this interests you. Ugh, that was f***ing grim. There are days were I want to turn in my membership to the human race. Become an honorary rhesus monkey or something. I believe Uganda is also the country that turns down aid from the Episcopal Church USA because of the gay issue--and a lot of the very conservative episcopal churches are flocking to for leadership. At least the American "religious" leaders that sparked the worst of this fatwa/jihad/crusade/whatever are a little contrite. Just shows the continued problem of religious/cultural imperialism and going in and saying s*** like that when you don't know a damn thing about the culture. They make me absolutely sick.
  4. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) *shakes head* via And this ladies and gentlemen is why we NEED to teach evolution. Because clearly no one understands what the f*** it is.
  5. Link At the link Christine O'Donnell asking where in the constitution is separation of church and state while looking smug. When the audience laughs she acts like she scored a major point. It has to be performance art, right? It has to be.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 12:18 PM) This is going to be an exercise in embarrassment for the City of Chicago. But will it be a bigger or smaller mess than the NY gubernatorial election?
  7. Just watched a good chunk of yesterday's Governor's debate in New York. What a clusterf***. A hilarious clusterf***, but a clusterf*** nonetheless.
  8. Wow, I didn't realize what a good deal I've got. As a singe gal, I pay $35 a month for health care and an additional $17 a month for emergency dental (I have extreme phobias about my teeth). Families on my plan push you up to $90 a month. I love working for the state!
  9. I voted having a nice day. But after yesterday, it feels like Top of the World. But I've work 12-14 hours every day this week and will still have to work all weekend. So, s*** I should have put the last one.
  10. I do a decent Bob Dylan impression. Or at least it cracks me up. Otherwise I love to sing, but lack any real skills. I also have the horrible habit of someone who lives alone of singing constantly to myself. I've caught myself doing it in public a few times, much to my chagrin. So, yes, I am that crazy lady that sings softly to herself in an offkey and generally awful way.
  11. So, a recent pew survey found that Agnostics and Atheists did the best on this survey. I thought it might be interesting to see how everyone does here. A link to the survey can be found here: http://features.pewforum.org/quiz/us-religious-knowledge/? I got a 15/15, and am a weekly service attending Anglican. And just in advance, no religion snarking here.
  12. So, maybe I watch too much tv (although I suppose it's usually the same show over and over). But I find myself quoting some shows a lot. Am I the only one? And which shows do you quote all the time? For me, my top three of most quotable are: Fawlty Towers (I like a woman with spirit, I do! I do! Oh god, don't smile, don't smile.) Arrested Development (Come on!) 30 Rock (what the what?)
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/busines...k-accident.html I'm not sure if I want to say Come ON! Or I've made a huge mistake.
  14. I quilt and read--right now I am working on re-reading all of Jane Austen and then I'll start the British Victorian authors. I will read just about anything though--I have a weak spot for historical non-fiction and the "tartan noir" genre. I also spend a lot of time hiking. I also love travel, but am usually too broke. This summer I am hoping to Wales, England and Scotland, though. . . Of course now that school has started back up all hobbies are pushed to the back burner.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 06:26 AM) Right, those tea party f***ers... racist bastards... they threaten those Mooslims. Hardcore! AmeriKKKa! Knock it off. It's beneath you--and it devalues the good points you make.
  16. I don't think they'll indict him on anything (not for want of trying). This is just personal conjecture--but Daley doesn't seem the type to walk away from a fight. I don't think indictments alone would be enough to make him walk away. I guess I never realized how old he was--i thought he was still in his early 60s late fifties. I will say this for him, when I think about other Rust Belt cities Chicago comes out way ahead. Like NSS said, I don't doubt Mayor Daley loves Chicago.
  17. Awww! Happy birthday Rex!!!
  18. I'm teaching: Intro Psych Senior Research BioPsych Psychology of Monsters (first year seminar) An IS in Language and Culture Another IS just for students to work in my lab.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) You guys are wusses..... Um, the part in UP where he opens the photo album and sees the note his wife left about creating his own adventures. Totally. The final scene in The Lives of Others when Ulrich (former Stasi guy) buys the book and says "It's for me." The final scene in It's a Wonderful Life "To my brother--the richest man in town!" The scene in Harvey when Veta rushes in to stop Elwood from getting the procedure. The scene where Edward finally asks Elinor to marry him in Sense and Sensibility. The scene in The African Queen when Hepburn's spinster talks about how she's never felt so alive.
  20. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) Pew Survey http://people-press.org/report/645/ Jesus H. Christ.
  21. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:42 PM) I think having a vagina generally sucks more all-around than having a penis. Maintenance on those things is a b****. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:45 PM) I'd assume that it's like owning a cave that needs continual maintenance. You guys are too funny. It does have its advantages though.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Speaking of male reproductive organs I just got back from the doctor. I know doctors are professionals but I still feel really awkward when I pull out my penis for someone to look at. b**** please. At least it doesn't involve stirrups and a medieval looking torture devise.
  23. The one that comes to mind first is from a recent movie The Winter's Bone. It involves a girl, her dead father, two crazy scary meth head relatives and a chainsaw. It's not gory at all, but oh god, i had to look away. The rape scene in The Accused. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
  24. For f***'s sake Minnesota can you have an election without a recount? Crikey.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 12:52 PM) Can you offer a citation on this? No, but I've been doing some Scholarship of Teaching and Learning work recently and one thing you find is that interventions don't work if the instruction is of poor quality. Take, for example, Service Learning where students go into the community and apply what they've learned. Only works if the teaching is high rated and the instructor seems to know what's going on. So, a poor teacher and poor learning outcomes do not magically become mitigated by some intervention. Without quality instruction as a backbone, there's poor student outcomes associated. Perhaps it is an unfounded generalization.
