I believe the Sox would have to DFA Benintendi to attempt to send him to the minors; however, he would have to agree to go.  He could instead choose to take the rest of his guaranteed contract, become a free agent, and sign with another team.  With so many years left on his deal, I doubt Jerry would approve cutting him loose.

I was unclear. I was talking about Vaughn. They’re just gonna have to cut Benintendi at some point, but he still has 3 1/2+ years left.

Hiring an experienced manager with a winning background costs money and JR has gone on record as saying he doesn't think a field manager or head coach matters that much to a team's performance.

But would it cost that much more to hire a base or bench coach from a winning organization than hiring one from the effing Royals.

  3. Sure, if the owner has decided not to spend any money at all on free agents and the only way we can get good is to build entirely through the farm, we should trade LuBob.

But if the young pitching continues to come around, and the owner is willing to spend the amounts that he was willing to spend when Hahn was in charge, we should keep Luis Robert and we should sign two or three quality free agents who are not relievers  and try to win this thing in a couple of years.

So who do you think is gone?

    The candidates:

Chris Flexen - sounds like he may be sliding into a long-relief/spot starter role

Deivi Garcia - has been bad

Tim Hill - see above note, currently have Banks and Shuster as lefties in pen

    Dominic Leone - meh

Edit: could option Shuster but would still need a 40-man move.

Garcia has had 4 straight scoreless outings.

I just don't see us getting much for Fredde.

Lynn had a history and was still striking people out at high rates; I can see the Dodgers thinking they could get him squared away.

Hahn did arguably his best work in with the Angels.  He finally did a deal on OUR terms, taking advantage of the Angels eagerness to take one last big swing in the last days of Ohtani.  I'm not sure that Getz will be that tactical; but I didn't think Hahn could be either.

  5. As of now, I prefer to think of Getz as proactive, if only to help my sanity.

And I gotta say, these young pitchers are looking pretty good. But we better match them up with some hitters, or we going to be in the shts for a long time.

"Yeah, Colson is deserving to be at Charlotte after what he did in Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League. He’s shown that that is the right decision so far,” Getz said. “Colson’s doing really well.

“Defensively he’s making some really good plays. That's been a high priority for the organization. His at-bats have been pretty solid. He’s showing up every day and really becoming the overall professional we had hoped, and really looking forward to watching his progress unfold there in Charlotte."

Being on that Charlotte team is a penance.  That operation is basket-case, second only to the major league operation.

Send him to Birmingham so that he doesn't have the shi$$ness of the team weighting down his development.

And it sure sounds like Kopech is the Sox' closer, now.

Kopech threw 24 pitches.  Why was he unavailable?

If they are trying to turn him into a trade piece (which they should - he has the same control timetable as Cease did), they're doing a lousy job of it.  They have about 2 months to prove that he's major league closer capable of handling high leverage situations and pitching multiple innings, then he needs to pitch.  Save situations will be rare for this team.  As of now, he's former top  prospect with a lot of arm talent, who's been floundering for a couple of years in the majors.

  8. What were the Sox supposed to do with Palka after that season? Cut him?

They never penciled him in for anything.

And one day, we might get some fortune with one of these guys.  Sometimes it does take a while.  See Naylor, who sucked for 5 seasons before he got good.

I don't get it. You let Kopech go 2, but not Wilson? I just want consistent logic from the manager. He was at 7 pitches, he breezed through the prior inning. He is not in any way on a pitch count or coming back from injury. He was ready to go out there and win it.

The 2 was the anomaly.   Usually, everybody gets an inning.   He just doesn't manage to win the game.
Not surprisingly, when he doesn't do his usual and lets Kopech pitch 2, the Sox win.

"Oh those melons; if he's able; we're to have a feast, so nice."
"One goes to the Abbot's table; all of us get each a slice."

That my friends was one horrifically managed baseball game.

It's game after game like this.

Each reliever gets his inning.  But don't tire them any, 150 games left to play.

Bryan Shaw - good gracious, he shouldn't have even made the team out of the Spring.

In 1968. the Sox didn't score more than 4 in the first 10 games. Basically, they scored 1 or none. They lost 95 that season and the franchise nearly fell apart.

And they made a bunch of sorry trades after the 1967 season to abet the effort.
And the Miracle Mets will be forever grateful.

  12. Sox are going to be mostly sh$$y until they develop a good farm system.  Yea, the current snapshot of the Sox' prospects is okay today (although I suspect it's more in the 15-20 range), but the farm system and infrastructure are still bottom-quartile.
When Williams took over, yes he inherited well, but the Sox also had a good farm (which he helped to build).  The Sox had a good farm from 1990-2005 (arguably til 2010) and the Sox had a good team most of those years.  But from 1970-1990 and 2006-present, the farm system has been mostly bad, as has been the team on the field (except for a few short pockets of success)
You just can't trade your way to improvement anymore; teams won't give up squat in young talent.

Grifol isn’t good, that’s not even in question. He probably goes home every night and gives Jerry his vitamins to help him stay healthy.

You don't even have to be good to manage most of these situations.  You just have to be not terrible.

A good manager would run roughshod over Getz;  But I would hope that Getz might see some benefit to his own career in a manager who really knows the game.
I always thought the reason that Hahn never hired a good manager is because he didn't want the manager to show him up; I would hope that Getz is more self aware and without those ego issues.
