  1. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) I actually know someone who was there, and talked to them this morning on a conference call. He one of our directors of Sales, and is a delegate from Minnesota. He liked the speech, as well as a lot of others. I thought the ending of the speech was great, the call to service. The only thing your constant ad hominem attacks on anything opposing Obama does is ad post count. At this point both parties are pretty aligned with their side. The limited undecided are not going to be moved by constant Snarky attacks and blatant conjecture. You are turning into the political version of Jabroni, a former poster. You might want to look up the definition of "ad hominem".
  2. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) Who is "they"? Liberal bloggers? You could call them liberal bloggers, but they prefer to be called "strawmen" or "boogeymen". (It's the pc term.)
  3. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 4, 2008 -> 07:48 AM) It's nice that you all can infer things to feel indignant about from her speech. i too could have used a few less funny jabs, but she wasn't mocking community organizers per say, but mocking the idea that registering people to vote equates to executive experience. That is like saying he can be President because he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. And the comments about her 'cockiness'? Oh please. The Obama camp exudes cockiness, with his 'President' chair on his campaign plane to all his faux presidential seals. Maybe it is creative editing or just luck of photographers, but it seems like every time they print a picture of Obama, he has his head tilted back just a bit so he appears to be looking down on people. That, or his logo is positioned behind him so that the circle looks like a halo, or aura around his head. And quit comparing her speech to Obama's. She is running for VP. Biden's speech contained no meat either, so why did hers have to? Now that's just completely wrong. She was saying that a community organizer has no actual responsibilities. That followed Giuliani's speech, in which he literally scoffed at the very words. They both mocked the very idea of being a community organizer, and the ridicule contained nothing specific about Obama's experience. As for the rest, it was a political speech. If you want to go disrespectful, nasty, and personal with the vp speech, that's a choice. But doing so gives the lie to much of what McCain said last night. I don't think they can continue this particular good-cop/going-at-the-other-side-with-a-broomstick-cop routine for very long.
  4. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 4, 2008 -> 12:13 AM) It's real early to see what the reaction will be. Might be a big bounce for the GOP, might be negative, might have no effect at all really. I saw about half the speech.... and have seen people saying it was as good as Obama's speech. I disagree and here's why. When I watched Obama's Speech, I thought to myself "Wow, this is getting really negative. Reminds me of McCain's green screen speech a couple months ago." Then he talked about the positive changes he would make - with some substance behind them. He would attack but do so respectfully. His speech was as much about making America better and what he can do to help make it better as it was to show how McCain wasn't right. Palin's speech was all about his family. Then it was about cheap shot after cheap shot. No real substance to the speech. Nothing to tell me why she's a good choice. Just cheap shot after cheap shot. It felt nasty. I'm biased, I admit. I'm voting for the Democrat regardless because I feel that is the party that bests works for my interests. But if I was undecided? I'd probably look for the candidate who doesn't feel like the only way to win is to be nasty. "This election is not about issues." It wasn't a slip, it's an organizing idea behind this convention and the McCain campaign.
  5. QUOTE (farmteam @ Sep 4, 2008 -> 12:04 AM) I definitely felt mocking (and then the crowd laughing at) the Community Organizer stuff was a bit classless. I'm more surprised that there hasn't been a lot of talk about her comment about Obama only caring about prisoners' rights (can't remember the exact words). To me, it sounded like she was saying prisoners don't have rights if the U.S. government doesn't want them to. Athomeboy gave you the quote, but just to be clear on the context -- it's a reference to the Supreme Court decision stating that Guantanamo Bay prisoners do have habeas corpus rights. It's part of the 'red meat', as many Republicans are angry about that decision. Obama supported it, McCain opposed it. The administration's position is basically what you said, applied to the Gitmo prisoners -- that they have no rights. Presumably, McCain believes the same thing.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 4, 2008 -> 12:21 AM) My girl, Nora O'DOnnell, just said on MSNBC that over the past few days people have asked her "what is a community organizer?". Now is a GREAT time to introduce Obama the Organizer and show just how out of touch Palin and the GOP are for mocking community organizers. Remember, the crowd LAUGHED when she mocked community organizers I don't like that approach, because he's not running on his co experience. She mocked the very idea of being a community organizer. I would show the work that organizers are doing TODAY, particularly in the inner city, the people who are doing the work and the results that are happening in America now. Say, look, these are the people who she says have no responsibilities. These are the people she was laughing at. Is this the sort of activity we want our American leaders mocking? What she said didn't just ridicule Obama -- that should be clear, and it can't become a mere feud.
  7. It seems rather dangerous to mock an entire group of people who work in the service of the community at low pay. That sounds kinda, uh, honorable. The Dems could really do a lot of damage on this, if they play it right. Focus on community organizers and people who they've helped recently -- not on Obama's CU experience. It could be a thing of beauty.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:55 PM) I dont have a ton of experience, but i think "community organizer" is a rather broad umbrella. In my town of Schaumburg you might organize a community clean up day but on the southside it might involve getting kids to school. Is there such a thing in Schaumburg? I mean, in Obama's case, it was a job, paid for (iirc) by a coalition of church groups. As I understand it, it basically involves working towards community needs that no one person/church can fulfill on its own. Perhaps sometimes helping kids get to school, but moreso trying to arrange a way to ensure they get to school regularly. I would think the local government in Schaumburg would handle most of that. I'm just not sure it would be helpful to have such a person in a suburb, with people so much more dispersed.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:15 PM) Obama can pretend he's Ahminidinijoud. He could try, but O'Reilly likes Obama much, much less.
  10. All of the McCain camp complaints about the attacks on her now look untenable. You can't openly mock an opponent that way and then cry foul when your administration of a berg is made to look like small potatoes. Hopefully the Dems hit back hard on the community organizer mockery. Personally, I think that could be very effective.
  11. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:01 PM) So does this about sum up her speach....fear...war.....shot at Obama...fear....war....shot at Obama? But seriously, I was really hoping to hear more about real issues during this speech and there has been very little of that. Remember, "this election is not about issues." If you think they are important, you are a bad little voter.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) I just don't see what there is to gain beside I guess setting the contrast in how McCain is refusing to be interviewed by Campbell Brown now It just looks good, imo. A candidate who can be charming in the face of a host who is clearly out to get him simply appears more personable.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 09:01 PM) guests on O'Reilly's show haven't always left cordial lol Nah...he'll be the way he is, but slightly better -- he knows he's talking to the future president. (Just ask Peggy Noonan.) And Obama knows what network he's on. The only thing to do is to be pleasant. Unless O'Reilly accuses Obama of personally spreading Briston Palin gossip or sexually harassing his producer, it'll be chilly-pleasant enough.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) Honestly, nothing good will come of it. edit: one thing I hope he pushes, is to be cordial and push the point, that he may not agree with O'Reilley's views, but he can still enjoy him. Be friends with him. We need to stop this fake enemy crap. If you'll give CNN one thing, their commentators, repub and democrat seem to enjoy each other. It's taken the heat out of the emotions. I think it could be very good. He'll certainly be cordial, he is a guest, after all. He could come out of this looking great. If he manages to be half as clever as Colbert was, it'll be an absolute coup.
  15. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 06:53 PM) Hell, her own mother in law hates her because Palin wouldn't back her for election to mayor. Of course MIL is a life long democrat and very pro choice, opposite of Palin, so why should she? I don't see why any of that should matter for the office of mayor of Wasilla.
  16. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:26 PM) Suing for what exactly? Good luck proving a slander/defamation case, the test for a public figure requires malice (actual knowledge of the falseness of the statement). I don't think the point is to win, it's to show that you're willing to deny the claim under oath. These are sourced from enemies of Palin, and the affair supposedly happened a while ago. Bold prediction: No retraction, no lawsuit that goes to trial, thing just fizzles out.
  17. QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:10 PM) I don't buy it either. If it were true, they probably wouldn't be in the process of suing the Enquirer right now. Unless something broke in the last 30 min or so, all they've said is that they'll "consider" legal action.
  18. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:01 PM) Well, they nailed Edwards. Or was it that Edwards nailed... oh never mind. But I dont buy it (literally and figuratively). Too soon for this to break. It's not a very credible source, but I don't know about the "too soon" argument. It wouldn't take very long to track down her enemies and ask them to talk to you.
  19. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Im not gonna say my point isnt stupid, I know it is. I just think its stupid to assume a countries power might be lacking if it isnt the size of Russian, especially when they have nuclear weapons. Im admitting its a stupid argument, it was more ribbing for people criticizing Alaska, but will you at least for diplomacy admit he was in fact talking about the physical size of Iran, because you know he was. I try to not know things that aren't true.
  20. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 04:11 PM) He references Cuba and Iran and he is comparing the "size" to Russia, he isnt talking about economic size. He actually uses the word "tiny" And both are, relative to the USSR, tiny in both population and economic size. Again, unless you think he was saying that Canada is a major superpower, more powerful than the US, then your argument is just a red herring.
  21. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) Are you trying to say he isnt referencing the size of Iran, yes or no? "Size" can refer to land mass, or to population, economic 'size' -- many different things. Population, USSR was close to 300 mil, Iran is about 70 mil (iirc). And we've grown in the meantime, so the effect is larger than that. Later in the speech, Obama explicitly refers to the economic 'size'/power, in pointing out that we spend 100x as much on the military. You want to merely assume that Obama is talking about land mass, go ahead. It's pretty silly to think that he was saying that Canada is one of the most powerful nations in the world, but if you want to believe that, be my guest.
  22. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) Can Palin be a mother and a vice president? The left would normally scoff at such a question. This was part of the feminist fight...the liberal fight for women. (Those on the right just wanted them home, pregnant, and in the kitchen.) The opportunity for both a career and a family and not having to chose between the two. That was the goal. So liberals are all for the advancement of women, but only one that fits their mold. Is anyone here raising that question? Of course she can. If you make this choice, then the job comes first for you. Maybe her family life suffers, but that's her choice. It doesn't affect me, it doesn't affect the country, and I don't care. It's a non-issue. Edit: As for the advancement of women, well, duh. If by "mold" you mean "someone whose beliefs are at least in the ballpark of mine", then yes, I only want a woman who fits that "mold" to be prez/vp. Saying that liberals should support any woman whatever her policy beliefs is a pretty funny position.
  23. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I consider myself a fairly well educated person with a slightly above average IQ. There is NO way I could ever think to be ready to be a VP in less than month. not even a chance. I'd be ignorant to even think I could. If I were Biden, I;d find a way to sneak in one simple question during the VP debate... "tell me the difference between the Sunni and Shiite" and pray it doesn't blow up in his face. Like hell you would. You don't bet the presidency on Trivial Pursuit.
  24. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis: "This election is not about issues. This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates." Everything I saw of the GOP convention today, I filtered through that quote. And I gotta say, I think it explains quite a lot.
  25. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) Free time home buyer soon (I hope.) Looking to buy a used condo that was built less than 5 years ago. Do I qualify for any free money? Of course there is. I mean, if Matthew Lesko says there is, who am I to argue?
