  1. Change in the terms of the deal. Rotoworld is reporting that Kontos and Coke are out, while Daniel McCutchen and Jeff Karstens are in. (Tabata and Ohlendorf are still in.) Since Coke was pulled after one inning, presumably he was part of a deal that got reworked. Check out McCutchen's MiLB stats. With Tabata, not a bad package.
  2. Marte and Nady traded to the Yankees. Not sure what the return is.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 02:04 AM) She's blonde, she was a cheerleader (or dancer? either one is fantastic), she's gorgeous, and she loves sports. You find me a more attractive woman than that, and I'll call you a filthy liar. From Marisa Miller's wikipedia page: I ain't no liar.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 05:09 PM) When the Saudis raise their hands up and go "what the hell? this s*** is too high!" you know something "unseemly" is going on. Yeah...cuz when the rest of the world is worrying about oil prices, the first thing the Saudis want to do is toss up fistfuls of money and yell, I'm rich, beeyatch! That would look great.

  6. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) I actually want to see how Bennett and Monk will do. Another guy I wish the Bears would really give a good shot to is Hass. I'm thinking Hass is toast. We have Lloyd, Hester, Booker, Bradley, Bennett, Davis, Monk, and Hass. Just too many ostriches.
  7. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) You forget how much Ed Wade loves his middle relievers. How else do you explain the Brad Lidge trade for example (especially now that Michael Bourne isn't even a starter). I explain it by pointing to the facts that they thought Bourn was going to be (and play like) a starter, whatever eventually happened, that Costanzo hit a bucketful of homers in AA last year, and Geary had passable headline stats at the major league level. MacDougal doesn't have passable stats in AAA, and he's signed through next year. If the Astros are looking to ditch Towles, they'll find plenty of catcher-hungry teams with half-decent middle relievers. I'm not saying they will deal him for that, but there's not a chance in hell they deal him for MacDougal, who's basically worthless right now.
  8. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:23 AM) You could probably get J.R Towles for Mike MacDougal also. I'm not kidding here. Not a chance. Even if Towles is available, they'll want more than 5+ era, 1.8 whip in AAA MacDougal.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 11:14 AM) I think you have to wait until the player is off the DL. Hence, the PTBNL. I could be wrong, but I did read that once a long time ago. Yeah, you could be right, it could be even an 'implied' rule like Kenny Hates Prospects (who hates prospects ) suggested (ie, the commish just won't approve such trades). I just remembered that bit from Neyer's piece, so I wasn't sure.
  10. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) I didn't look into it but how does that work with compensation picks???????? The Elias rankings look at the last two years of play. Last year, Furcal wasn't very good, this year he won't accumulate many counting stats, so I wouldn't count on him being a Type A player.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) I also believe you can't trade guys on the DL Is it disallowed, or just not often done? From Neyer's Transactions Primer: That makes it sound like it's allowed, just not 'cool'. Wouldn't happen, anyway. The Dodgers would probably rather hold onto him on the off chance he comes back this year. (Iirc, he's vowed to play again this year, not that it means much.)
  12. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) I don't remember the exact rule and to be honest I don't know the details of this situation, but if you can make a reasonable argument that you make a lot of money (talking high 6 figures, 7 figure salary) and that being on active duty impedes that, you can get an exception. I do remember being in a unit once where the commander was talking about a reservist E-7 in the unit who was an exec somewhere who made probably more than any general in his civilian job, and saying how it made him proud to be commanding someone like that (he said he wanted to serve and that he was willing to take the financial hit). I dunno about this... Why did David Robinson serve for two years before playing? If true, that would be one of the most monumentally stupid rules I've ever heard. You have to put your life on the line as originally agreed. Unless you're going to be really rich. Then you're excused.
  13. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) Im sure he is, but still, nobody wants to just give away 445000 bucks. Im sure Hester wants to get this done quick The more important thing is the service time. Rotoworld's take: There's no way he's risking that.
  14. Man, Kenny Hates Prospects really hates prospects. I mean really just flat-out despises 'em. No thanks.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 08:27 AM) If you make enough money you can file a hardship if I'm not mistaken. Pretty sure you need a family hardship to get a hardship discharge, "enough money" won't cut it. Which is good. Every time people have been allowed to buy their way out of service, it's been bad news -- the NYC draft riots, the bitterness over college deferments during Vietnam. I think the Army is entirely right in this, except for the wavering. (Iirc, they initially said he could play, then changed course.)
  16. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:06 AM) If it's Uribe for Cora, straight up, even the first domino bit doesn't compute. That's what I don't get. How does this part help anywhere else? If it's a salary dump, the Sox are saving less than $1 mil. Unless KW's pennies away from his spending limit and he wants to turn Cabrera into Lowe, I don't get it.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 05:59 PM) According to Peter King's article earlier this week, prior to the Urlacher signing the Bears still had something like $12.3 million in cap space available this year, which is in the upper 1/3 of the NFL in available cap room. Even after Urlacher and Williams, that should be enough to get something done. Unless he's demanding a $30 mil bonus or something crazy like that.
  18. QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) BTW, before the hold out, I was all for Hester getting an extension. But no where near 6/45. I would be in favor of something like 6/30. Realistically, can the Bears even offer something like that right now? I thought they were close to the cap as-is.
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 06:23 PM) Although I have never been in that position, where I could be making millions of dollars per year and instead am making hundreds of thousands, I would like to believe that people would honor their contracts. You signed it, so deal with it. You knew when putting your name on that paper that you were going to get paid that much, under the rules of the contract. If you didnt like it, dont sign it, or you shouldve changed the terms of the contract when writing it up. Honor your contract. Thats my point of view. And yes teams can release guys under contract too, but they still have to pay that money, and if a guy is underperforming, then that team is stuck with that contract, they cant renegotiate with the player just because they feel its unfair. That's almost completely wrong. Teams can cut a guy and be free of all future money and threaten to cut an underperforming guy to force him to renegotiate.
  20. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) Bears need Charles Rogers as someone else stated. Very talented and was caught in a mess in Detroit. It's like a blackhole up there for football. We need somebody who routinely fails drug tests, hasn't been able to latch on anywhere despite numerous tryouts, and reportedly ran a 4.8 40 in his last tryout? The receiving corps may be bad, but it sure as hell is not that bad. Monk > Rogers, easy.
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) I would think the Sox would be getting something more than just Roberts in a deal involving OC. I don't know if that would mean someone like Daniel Cabrera or someone on the Dodgers. Either way I wouldn't be opposed to those three teams working something out. How is that possible? Unless we chipped in more, of course. But I think Roberts is worth more than Cabrera.
  22. Bears starting wide outs as of right now are Lloyd and Hester (Suntimes via rotoworld). Alright then.
  23. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 05:50 PM) Wolf actually could have been a solid pick-up as a 5th starter to replace Contreras. He has some solid looking periph's. The risk is that his actual ERA isn't that good, especially when you factor that he'd be going from PETCO to the CELL and the NL to the AL. This would have been a solid pick-up for any team actually in contention (ie, not Houston). His road stats are a 6.63 era, 1.62 whip. I'm glad the Sox stayed far, far away.
  24. Just a thought, but is it possible that Wolf will be a Type B free agent? Last year, he scored 50.8 on the Elias rankings, and 58.2 was the lowest score for a B (Rich Hill). But throw out his 2006 (56 ip, 44 k, 5.56 era) and replace that with this year's stats (currently 120 ip, 105 k, 4.74 era) -- maybe that's enough to net a comp pick? I dunno about this. I can easily see him accepting arbitration. Just wondering if it's possible to make sense of this move.
  25. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) I tried to imagine as I was watching that it was the intro video for an NBA team. And I gotta tell you, I think that would be awesome. I don't think that would ever get old.
