    2012 White Sox Catch-All thread

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 4, 2012 -> 11:27 PM) I think your post goes to show you that breaking it down by individual team W-L isn't an accurate way to look at it. Can't beat good teams except these two good teams and only beat bad teams except these two really bad teams. Maybe there just isn't a pattern... I could easily just say that if you flipped the records against Detroit and Kansas City that we look awesome. Sure, but that's like saying if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle. If you "flipped" the record and they went 12-6 against KC and Detroit, they would have won 12 more games this season and would have been a 96 win team, easily winning the division by 11 games. They would have had a record of 12-6 versus Detroit, 12-6 vs. KC, 14-4 vs. Minnesota and 11-7 vs. Cleveland, a total record of 49-23 vs. the Division. They still would have been 47-43 vs. the rest of the league. People would rightly have said that they are a great team in the weak AL Central, but mediocre vs. everyone else. And those people would have an argument.

    Rick Hahn the new GM

I still don't understand from the stories what Kenny Williams is going to be doing. I do think he's still going to be making the player personnel moves. I think a big part of it is giving him the same title as Theo Epstein.

    Rick Hahn the new GM

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 06:53 PM) i think it happens AFTER the WS, as MLB hates to have non-WS news mix in the WS hype. This. And Jerry Reinsdorf will toe the line.

    Peavy hires Berry as agent

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) I'm usually not but that just stuck out for some reason since I'd never seen it before. The ones I usually see are: for all intensive purposes (for all intents and purposes) mute point (moot point) take for granite (take for granted) I thought it was for "all intensive purposes" for probably the first 25-28 years of my life. To me, it makes a lot of sense. I don't know how many people thought I was an idiot when I said it. Lawyers love to say "mute point" as a joke. Well, not really lawyers. Judges think its hilarious for some point.
  5. I'm trying to figure out: (1) Would the Yankees ever pick up the $18-$20 million per year they would need to pick up to make dealing A-Rod palatable. (many say no) (2) Would the new team have to pick up the marketing bonuses for his 700th home run, 763 home run, etc. (this could be a deal killer) (3) Who would the Yankees replace him with at 3rd base? They would have just as big a problem as the White Sox would have in replacing Youkilis. (could be the ultimate deal killer). They could wait out one more year and make a run at Chase Headley or David Wright. No need to do it 2013. He's likely to still have an above average year. At the end of the day, I'm not sure they'd get a taker at anything less than them picking up $80-$100 million of the $114 million in salary and $20 million of the $30 million in marketing bonuses. At that level of payment, it may make more sense to keep him and see if he turns it around.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 09:00 AM) The Phils have somewhat cooled on Dominic Brown. For good reason. In 500 plate appearances, he has a .236 / .316 / .388 line.

    Peavy hires Berry as agent

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) Better yet, Paul Konerko stayed with the White Sox not once, but twice, for less money. This is not true.

    Peavy hires Berry as agent

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 9, 2012 -> 06:13 PM) He threw 219 innings and put up a 3.37 ERA this year. That is the best season for a White Sox pitcher throwing more than 200 innings since Mark Buehrle in 2005. Jake Peavy was really, really good this year. By fWAR and bWAR, he was the 6th best pitcher in the AL this year, and bWAR says he was the 9th best pitcher in the majors this year. Jake Peavy was really, really good. You are right, no one is going to push him out the door for $12-13, and if they lose him for that but retain Floyd at $9.5, I'm gonna choke someone, and I love Gavin Floyd. I'm just still pissed at him for choking time and again against the Tigers and down the stretch. He just isn't a big game pitcher. Of course, at $11 million per year (as someone suggested), he'd be well worth it. But I think he goes to the Red Sox for $16 million per (or better) and then continually chokes against the Yankees next year.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 9, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) How is Zobrist a glorified role player? Glorified by 6 WAR, obviously.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Oct 8, 2012 -> 08:17 PM) My 2012 plan: This team needs better baseball IQ, fundamentals and higher .OBP. This is a roster shakeup that is entirely possible. Sign Brian McCann 3/$36 I love this signing but he won't be a free agent until 2014. So that is kind of a problem.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (pktmotion @ Oct 7, 2012 -> 02:44 AM) Trade Rios/Quintana to SEA for Vargas/Olivo/Figgins Trade Floyd to BAL for Davis/Patton I know you put some thought into this, so I don't want to be too critical here, but Chone Figgins has been one of the worst players in the league 3 years in a row. .646 OPS in 2010, .484 OPS (!!!!) in 2011, and .533 OPS in 2012. He's owed $8 million in 2013 and a $9 million option vests for 2014 if he gets 600 PA in 2013. You can bet that Seattle isn't going to give him anywhere near 600 PAs next year. Olivo is now 33 years old and he only hits LH pitching. The Sox already have Tyler Flowers on the roster, so Olivo makes very little sense. Jason Vargas had a 97 ERA+ last year - his 3.85 ERA was severely deflated by playing in Safeco. He is a middling to low strikeout pitcher who throws lefty, and he is historically a flyball pitcher - which is death in US Cellular. So unless we want 4 lefties in our rotation, one of them beyond mediocre, he makes little sense for the White Sox. So we'd be trading an All Star OF and a decent lefty starter for really bad/expensive pieces. Arguably, it would be the worst trade on its face in recent MLB history. I'm not sure there's anyone on the Seattle roster other than King Felix (untouchable) or Kyle Seager that I would touch with a ten foot pole at this point. Maybe John Jaso. Floyd for Davis/Patton? Chris Davis is a decent player, but he's a 1B-DH at this point. So he would be stuck behind Konerko and Dunn. Patton is a nice piece, though. Again, not sure there is anyone on the Orioles roster I would want except for the untouchables (Markakis, Jones)

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) It wouldn't be the worst idea if they cant swing a trade for a 3B but can get a 2B...Like an Ian Kinsler maybe, the Rangers have Jurrickson Prufair (or whatever his name is) who seems ready to produce. Maybe Kinsler might be available and they might want Rios as a return is Hamilton leaves. Or maybe even Michael Young who can play some 3B or 2B. Ian Kinsler owed $75 million through 2017. He had a 95 OPS+ this year and next year he will be 31 and clearly on the downslope of his career....so I wouldn't take him on. Michael Young is 36 next year and had a 78 OPS+ this year...pass as well.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 01:05 PM) I would bring back youk, but no more than a one year deal and maybe an option, he does well and were out if it early you get something for him, he sucks you just let him go. Youk ain't coming back. He's said that family is now his #1 concern (just got married, just had kid) and he lives in Los Gatos (near San Jose). You know Billy Beane would love having him on the A's. I also don't think moving Gordon to 3rd and signing someone to play 2B is an option either. Gordon, while he plays plus defense at 2B, is not an asset at 3B (he's barely an asset at 2B with his marginal stick). The Sox need production from that spot.

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 08:25 PM) Oft injured, not good any more not worth the money .281 / .348 / .496 this year in 313 PA. Oft injured for sure. Not worthless. Not here to defend Chavez. Lots of bad options for 3B. You got a better one?

Your 2013 Plan for the White Sox

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 07:23 PM) Carpenter on StL is someone that I want the Sox to consider acquiring in order to play 3rd. Cheap talent will be hard to pry out of their hands but luckily they have 1B and 3B covered. Not sure he's 100% legit but I agree he's worth a flier. I'd deal Quintana straight up for him. I might even throw in Jared Mitchell.
