  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 4, 2012 -> 11:27 PM) I think your post goes to show you that breaking it down by individual team W-L isn't an accurate way to look at it. Can't beat good teams except these two good teams and only beat bad teams except these two really bad teams. Maybe there just isn't a pattern... I could easily just say that if you flipped the records against Detroit and Kansas City that we look awesome. Sure, but that's like saying if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle. If you "flipped" the record and they went 12-6 against KC and Detroit, they would have won 12 more games this season and would have been a 96 win team, easily winning the division by 11 games. They would have had a record of 12-6 versus Detroit, 12-6 vs. KC, 14-4 vs. Minnesota and 11-7 vs. Cleveland, a total record of 49-23 vs. the Division. They still would have been 47-43 vs. the rest of the league. People would rightly have said that they are a great team in the weak AL Central, but mediocre vs. everyone else. And those people would have an argument.
  2. I still don't understand from the stories what Kenny Williams is going to be doing. I do think he's still going to be making the player personnel moves. I think a big part of it is giving him the same title as Theo Epstein.
  3. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 06:53 PM) i think it happens AFTER the WS, as MLB hates to have non-WS news mix in the WS hype. This. And Jerry Reinsdorf will toe the line.
  4. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 01:45 PM) I'm usually not but that just stuck out for some reason since I'd never seen it before. The ones I usually see are: for all intensive purposes (for all intents and purposes) mute point (moot point) take for granite (take for granted) I thought it was for "all intensive purposes" for probably the first 25-28 years of my life. To me, it makes a lot of sense. I don't know how many people thought I was an idiot when I said it. Lawyers love to say "mute point" as a joke. Well, not really lawyers. Judges think its hilarious for some point.
  5. I'm trying to figure out: (1) Would the Yankees ever pick up the $18-$20 million per year they would need to pick up to make dealing A-Rod palatable. (many say no) (2) Would the new team have to pick up the marketing bonuses for his 700th home run, 763 home run, etc. (this could be a deal killer) (3) Who would the Yankees replace him with at 3rd base? They would have just as big a problem as the White Sox would have in replacing Youkilis. (could be the ultimate deal killer). They could wait out one more year and make a run at Chase Headley or David Wright. No need to do it 2013. He's likely to still have an above average year. At the end of the day, I'm not sure they'd get a taker at anything less than them picking up $80-$100 million of the $114 million in salary and $20 million of the $30 million in marketing bonuses. At that level of payment, it may make more sense to keep him and see if he turns it around.
  6. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Oct 11, 2012 -> 09:00 AM) The Phils have somewhat cooled on Dominic Brown. For good reason. In 500 plate appearances, he has a .236 / .316 / .388 line.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2012 -> 01:42 PM) Better yet, Paul Konerko stayed with the White Sox not once, but twice, for less money. This is not true.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 9, 2012 -> 06:13 PM) He threw 219 innings and put up a 3.37 ERA this year. That is the best season for a White Sox pitcher throwing more than 200 innings since Mark Buehrle in 2005. Jake Peavy was really, really good this year. By fWAR and bWAR, he was the 6th best pitcher in the AL this year, and bWAR says he was the 9th best pitcher in the majors this year. Jake Peavy was really, really good. You are right, no one is going to push him out the door for $12-13, and if they lose him for that but retain Floyd at $9.5, I'm gonna choke someone, and I love Gavin Floyd. I'm just still pissed at him for choking time and again against the Tigers and down the stretch. He just isn't a big game pitcher. Of course, at $11 million per year (as someone suggested), he'd be well worth it. But I think he goes to the Red Sox for $16 million per (or better) and then continually chokes against the Yankees next year.
  9. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 9, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) How is Zobrist a glorified role player? Glorified by 6 WAR, obviously.
  10. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Oct 8, 2012 -> 08:17 PM) My 2012 plan: This team needs better baseball IQ, fundamentals and higher .OBP. This is a roster shakeup that is entirely possible. Sign Brian McCann 3/$36 I love this signing but he won't be a free agent until 2014. So that is kind of a problem.
  11. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Oct 7, 2012 -> 02:44 AM) Trade Rios/Quintana to SEA for Vargas/Olivo/Figgins Trade Floyd to BAL for Davis/Patton I know you put some thought into this, so I don't want to be too critical here, but Chone Figgins has been one of the worst players in the league 3 years in a row. .646 OPS in 2010, .484 OPS (!!!!) in 2011, and .533 OPS in 2012. He's owed $8 million in 2013 and a $9 million option vests for 2014 if he gets 600 PA in 2013. You can bet that Seattle isn't going to give him anywhere near 600 PAs next year. Olivo is now 33 years old and he only hits LH pitching. The Sox already have Tyler Flowers on the roster, so Olivo makes very little sense. Jason Vargas had a 97 ERA+ last year - his 3.85 ERA was severely deflated by playing in Safeco. He is a middling to low strikeout pitcher who throws lefty, and he is historically a flyball pitcher - which is death in US Cellular. So unless we want 4 lefties in our rotation, one of them beyond mediocre, he makes little sense for the White Sox. So we'd be trading an All Star OF and a decent lefty starter for really bad/expensive pieces. Arguably, it would be the worst trade on its face in recent MLB history. I'm not sure there's anyone on the Seattle roster other than King Felix (untouchable) or Kyle Seager that I would touch with a ten foot pole at this point. Maybe John Jaso. Floyd for Davis/Patton? Chris Davis is a decent player, but he's a 1B-DH at this point. So he would be stuck behind Konerko and Dunn. Patton is a nice piece, though. Again, not sure there is anyone on the Orioles roster I would want except for the untouchables (Markakis, Jones)
  12. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) It wouldn't be the worst idea if they cant swing a trade for a 3B but can get a 2B...Like an Ian Kinsler maybe, the Rangers have Jurrickson Prufair (or whatever his name is) who seems ready to produce. Maybe Kinsler might be available and they might want Rios as a return is Hamilton leaves. Or maybe even Michael Young who can play some 3B or 2B. Ian Kinsler owed $75 million through 2017. He had a 95 OPS+ this year and next year he will be 31 and clearly on the downslope of his career....so I wouldn't take him on. Michael Young is 36 next year and had a 78 OPS+ this year...pass as well.
  13. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 01:05 PM) I would bring back youk, but no more than a one year deal and maybe an option, he does well and were out if it early you get something for him, he sucks you just let him go. Youk ain't coming back. He's said that family is now his #1 concern (just got married, just had kid) and he lives in Los Gatos (near San Jose). You know Billy Beane would love having him on the A's. I also don't think moving Gordon to 3rd and signing someone to play 2B is an option either. Gordon, while he plays plus defense at 2B, is not an asset at 3B (he's barely an asset at 2B with his marginal stick). The Sox need production from that spot.
  14. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 08:25 PM) Oft injured, not good any more not worth the money .281 / .348 / .496 this year in 313 PA. Oft injured for sure. Not worthless. Not here to defend Chavez. Lots of bad options for 3B. You got a better one?
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 07:23 PM) Carpenter on StL is someone that I want the Sox to consider acquiring in order to play 3rd. Cheap talent will be hard to pry out of their hands but luckily they have 1B and 3B covered. Not sure he's 100% legit but I agree he's worth a flier. I'd deal Quintana straight up for him. I might even throw in Jared Mitchell.
  16. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) Eric Chavez? Ummmmm no 3B Market is awful. Here are the 3B options: Morel...worst offensive player in baseball this year when he was playing. Youkilis - $13 million option for basically average performance in 2012 after he fizzled down the stretch. Rushing Sanchez up to the majors (and he has very little power) ??? Chavez as a stop gap until another 3B option becomes available is not a great option but there just is nothing out there....
  17. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 3, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) This.... Why stretch it back any further? They were 16-12 in August...It all came down to September. 5 of those 12 loses coming against the Royals, who lets face it are this years Twins for whatever reason. 1 loss against the Blue Jays and the rest came against playoff teams This White Sox team was 21 games over .500 against the Twins, Mariners and Indians (33-12). They were 13 under .500 against the rest of the American League (43-56). I think the season was a mirage - they looked good when playing crappy teams (except the Royals and Red Sox) and were less than mediocre against the rest of the league (except the Yankees and Rangers for some reason). Sure, if they split with the Royals they are in a one game playoff with the Tigers...but that just means you lose to Verlander one more time.
  18. The pieces I would keep are: Paul Konerko ($13.5) Adam Dunn ($15) Alejandro De Aza ($2.5 ARB) AJ Pierzynski ($8 / 1 year) Alexei Ramirez ($7 ) Flowers ($0.5) Beckham ($2 ARB) Viciedo ($2.5) (not clear what his salary will be) Sale ($0.5) Danks ($14.25) Floyd ($9.5) Santiago ($0.5) Crain ($4.5) Reed ($0.5) Jones ($0.5) Veal ($0.5) 16 guys, $81.75 million. I would trade Rios. I think we sell high on him to a contender that believes in him. I think he brings a good return. I would trade Quintana. I think this is another sell high situation. At the end of the day, I just think he doesn't have the stuff. Second time around the league, not so good. I would trade Thornton as a salary dump. He really did well for a lot of years but he doesn't have much left. The decline in K/9 and increase in hits is a glaring warning sign. Maybe some team will take a flyer on him. I would not pick up options on Youkilis or Peavy. Hudson, Olmedo and the other chaff - gone. Obviously, the holes I leave are 3B, CF (Moving De Aza to LF and Viciedo to RF) and one starting slot. Other 6 spots (4th OF, backup infielder, two bullpen spots) can be filled for roughly $6-$12 million. 3B is the biggest quandary. It probably will have to be filled through free agency as a stop gap. Eric Chavez is a free agent and you'd have to consider a 1-year deal from him. $3-4 million may even do it for him (he made $500k this year). Unless you can pry Chase Headley away from the Padres (you won't), it's stop gap city until the Sox can either develop a 3B man (STOP LAUGHING) or pick one up on the free agent market. CF I think you target Victorino for a turnaround. Given his poor 2012, his market value may be lower. I wouldn't go more than 2 years on him and maybe someone makes him a crazy offer. But he's an attractive choice. I think you could package Rios and Quintana for a solid starter. Take your pick. Oakland could use the offense and they have extra starters. Assuming they could take on a bit of salary, it's a good take for them. Maybe even you get B-Mac back to the Sox. A hypothetical lineup would be: De Aza LF Victorino CF Dunn DH Konerko 1B Chavez 3B Viciedo RF Pierzysnki C Ramirez SS Beckham 2B Rotation Sale B-Mac Danks Floyd Santiago Pen Jones Reed Crain Veal LH TBD RH TBD RH TBD Bench of Flowers, 4th OF, Middle IF, Corner IF.
  19. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 3, 2012 -> 09:00 PM) That doesn't stop this organization from trying to put the square peg in the round hole. See Josh Fields. You mean like, asking Josh Fields to hit major league pitching?
  20. This team has a long-term solution at exactly ONE position - #1 starter with Sale. And even there, his slight frame suggests that Sale may be subject to injury. We'll see if he holds up. Other than that, they have no better than average players under contract past 2014. Best hope is for Hawkins, Trayce Thompson, etc. to get to the big leagues in a HURRY and perform. Otherwise, spend money on free agency. And there are ZERO 3B man on the free agent market this winter. Starting pitching is a better market. But offense can't be had through free agency. I'd be surprised if the Sox contend before 2015.
  21. Has anyone mentioned that the White Sox are 10 games under .500 when playing teams not named the Minnesota Twins or the Seattle Mariners? I think we were just fooled by this team....too much smoke and mirrors for too long. Everyone knew Detroit was a better team going into 2012....it just took them until the last week of the regular season to exert their superiority. What's depressing is that there is so little to look forward to in 2013. The rotation will be Sale-Floyd-Danks QUESTION MARK - QUESTION MARK. And that's adding to the fact that Floyd and Danks are question marks in their own right. Sure, the team will be $24 million lighter with Peavy and Pierzynski leaving (although they really should re-sign AJ), but what evidence is there that the Sox will be spending this offseason? Not to mention the GAPING hole at 3B.
  22. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 25, 2012 -> 08:32 PM) Coolstandings: Tigers 51.5% White Sox 48.5% Just my own observation...Tigers 70%, White Sox 30% I'm sorry, but anyone who doesn't see this season going down the toilet in a hurry isn't paying attention. Those simulations that even give the Sox a chance are based on longer term play. This team is D-E-A-D. My guess is they will finish 3-5 games back.
  23. I don't know if there is a guy on the White Sox who can consistently bunt. Of course, I don't know why the Sox are trying to get a guy to 3rd base with less than 2 outs. They just strand them there anyway.
  24. Can we bury these mofos tonight? Can we just beat them 26-0 and get the hell out of KC?
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 19, 2012 -> 10:05 PM) RV, you absolutely suck right now. What was the bad decision he made? Viciedo had a 1.293 OPS against Chen coming into the lineup in 19 at bats. If he gets 2 hits tonight, the Sox are still playing. Other than filling out the lineup cards or ordering bunts (mostly dumb) or hit and runs, managers have very little impact on the game. I guess you can put Olmedo at SS instead of Ramirez if you wanted to go with someone who is poorer defensively AND has a worse career OPS against Chen than Ramirez. If there was any guy in the lineup that should not have played tonight it was De Aza...and he banged out 4 hits. Otherwise, the lineup in the game was about as optimal as you get against Chen. The lineup failed, not Robin.
