just got goosebumps thinking about last night's game. This is a hell of a team.
  2. FA starts today, the draft happened. I will try not be a downer, but my NBA fandom took a ginormous hit and I'm trying to recover because sports should be fun.

He's done this for a long time now though. He's a win-now player and does not like dealing with young players not knowing what to do. Obviously he's not alone there, Butler and Wade big-timed young bulls roster and Butler did same in MN. But in Miami, where the org does such a good job controlling culture and getting young guys to understand what's expected - it doesn't come up. But Lebron basically runs the orgs he's in where the energy is keeping Lebron happy, who likes to win and wants everyone to be 100% dedicated to winning but at the same time needs to take time off to ensure he can still go in playoffs - it's difficult to hold both of those. He's the biggest person in any org he's in, except when he was in the org of Pat Riley. I hated Riley as a kid, but holy cow do I respect what he's built in Miami. And how he groomed Spoelstra to takeover to, and supported him. How he rebuilt Miami without ever tanking, how he's kept the org modern in fitness and player dev. Truly amazing stuff to be that good for that long.

I think that is partially true, but I think Lebron deep down also just knew that he can't be the high usage player they demand he be with a bunch of role players like Kuzma, Caruso, etc. so that's where He probably thought I'll get westbrook, a guy we can just throw it to and tell him to go get it, a player I don't need to coddle about how hard to work. But I think he was probably only thinking offensively. You now have this exodus of Lakers role players going to two different orgs and completely turning around trash defenses. Not sure they really knew what they had there, because the 2020 lakers won because of defense. But I think they left it with a "star players cure all" feeling.

Where could Kimbrel be traded, and for what?

Hahn : "Jed, is it possible you could part with Craig Kimbrel? We'll offer you a bounty, Codi Heuer plus" Hoyer, on mute, howling at his fellow coworkers: "These miserable sacks of shit! Oh my god, tell them we need madrigal so they don't get embarrassed" Hoyer, composing himself, turns off mute: "Yeah uh, Hahn we're gonna need a Madrigal or that type" mutes again Office breaks up laughing, its pandemonium. People clutching their stomachs in pain from the stitches of laughter.

    MLB 2021-2 off season thread

I would imagine the owners are basically telling front offices not to make trades while they can't make contact with players rather than any legal cba barrier. And the commissioners office may also let teams know they won't approve any during this time. But hey, maybe it leaks that a trade is agreed to but will not be confirmed as official until after.

I've grown to like it. I hated the max deal because once the tier was way too big. And the years restriction has definitely made things worse in terms of players holding teams hostage and being easily moveable at all times. But star forced movement aside, I do like this system of being able to retain your own talent way over cap restrictions. Not a big fan of parody being achieved by cutting the legs out from great teams the way the nhl/nfl salary cap feels. The luxury tax is a big enough stick to have teams let go of talent that would push them into higher tiers (hello lakers, alex caruso), but if you are a true title contender you are fine going way over to keep your players - if they'll stay.

Oh hell yes! I can't express how much nicer it is to be able to watch a young player develop within a competitive, disciplined team rather than in a mess of other young players trying to figure out their game.

5 year anniversary of the start of the rebuild

More than anything the benefit of the trade was a clarity of direction that the org could get behind. It's maybe surprising that Yoan is still putting it all together, but that's why you bet on talent like that. He has become very good defensively. His OBP has given him a high floor. And if he can once again pair the high OBP with 25 HRs, then you have an MVP candidate.

    MiLB Rule 5 on Wed

We should definitely treat this milb rule 5 draft like a playoff game. Wall to wall coverage.

Sorry I'm dumb and got distracted by labor talks but we are doing $30M from the team salary where it stands right now (includes kimbrel, graveman, leury?)
  14. I get that for his original candidacy, but the golden years 2011 and 2014 that he could have been elected while alive is infuriating.

What are the NFL coach contracts going to look like now that $10M/yr is the going rate to keep a competitive coach in college?
  16. Free Agency: Trevor Story - 112 career wRC+ estimated cost: $18M-22M+ Annually Pluses - Defense (while this has been very muted outside a tremendous 2019, lots of signs he should be a great 2b - he is excellent at DP depth), Power (career .251 iso) Walks (9% walk rae) Minuses - Unknown coors effects Below Avg vs. RHP (98 career wRC+, 83 last year, our division has excellent RHP) Contact (23% K rate) Josh Harrison - 103 2021 wRC+ estimated cost ($4-5M+ annually) Pluses - Contact (13% krate) Not bad vs RHP (98 wRC+) Defense (outs above average loves, loves Josh Harrison) Minuses - Inconsistent offense (career 98 wRC+) BABIP dependent no power Age of decline (34 years old) Jose Iglesias - 91 2021 wRC+ estimated cost ($2-3M+ annually) Pluses - Contact (14% krate) Defense (outs above average likes his 2b more than his SS at this age) Minuses - BABIP dependent offense Bad vs RHP (81 wRC+) Doesn't walk Donovan Solano - 105 2021 wRC+ estimated cost ($2-3M+ annually) Pluses - Slightly above average offensively Average power 96 wRC+ (counts as positive with this group) Minuses - Bad defensively unreliable walk rate, higher k rate 34 years old Andrelton Simmons - 56 2021 wRC+ estimated cost ($6-9M+ annually) Pluses - World class defense at shortstop Can backup TA Plus Contact Minuses - Horrendous offense Zero power BABIP driven offense Career 85 wRC+ vs RHP Trades: Jean Segura - 103 2021 wRC+ COST 14M + 1M 2023 buyout Pluses - Great defense at second Contact (13% K rate) Average vs RHP Minuses - Fathom says he is mopey and has bad vibes Lacks power Expensive money wise Tony Kemp - 127 2021 wRC+ COST $2.5M Pluses - Great OBP in 3 of last 4 years (STEAMER predicts .350 OBP) Career 103 wRC+ vs RHP, 130 wRC+ last year Good, versatile defense by OAA Seems like he should be cheap prospect wise Minuses - Not a strong history of reliable performance to trust any of the above aside from defense Jeff McNeil - 93 2021 wRC+ COST PRE-ARB did not see value Pluses - Career 126 wRC+ 3 years of control Career 132 wRC+ vs RHP Contact 14% kRate Walk Rate 13% Walk Rate Great defense at 2b by OAA very likely the most perfect fit possible Minuses - Bad 2021 Expensive by Prospects/talent likely Ryan McMahon - 95 2021 wRC+ COST PRE-ARB did not see value Pluses - Above average vs RHP (106 wRC+) Good power (.195 iso) Good walk rates Minuses - Bad contact (25-30%K) While excellent last year, in 2019-20 was a ground ball machine a la Leury Garcia Amazing at 3rd, but only average to slightly below average at 2b by OAA Likely requires a very strong package of talent Tommy LaStella - 94 2021 wRC+ COST $6M Pluses - Madrigal-level contact Good BB rate Good GB% career 107 wRC+ vs RHP Minuses - Bad 2021 Back injury in 2021 and struggled after Not good defensively, possibly very bad late bloomer Possible platoon bad w/ Leury Easiest way out of this appears to be Kemp trade. Best way out seems to be McNeil, but I have 5% confidence he's traded.

The Second Base Options (as it stands)

I get the sentiment, but I still believe this but it requires the Sox to like, try. Escobar and Wendle weren’t just solid replacements, they improved LH balance and defense and were reasonable deals. Yeah if Sox don’t get any reasonable additions eventually there are not any. And the other thing about that sentiment - they were all about sending out Madrigal for good additions, and not someone for 3 months shipped out for salary relief.

I feel like I read a bunch that there are some things that would prevent bulls from re-signing him technically but no idea how long that lasts. But there were definitely some people writing that had he been cut in offseason the bulls would not have been allowed to pick him back up.
