In fairness - I have no idea if he was ever worth a 2nd or not. But when I see Wentz traded multiple times and Sam D'Arnold for something, it makes me assume Field(s) has to be worth that.  Cause the raw physical skills are tremendous and he's a good hard working individual.  But I also get it - teams don't just hand over draft capital.  Maybe after Day 1 of the draft there is a team who misses out and decides to pay up for him - maybe its a 3rd this year and like a conditional pick next year - I don't know.  I still hold out hope for if it is a 3rd they are getting one more pick.  If it was a 2nd - I would have always been thrilled with that.

On inverse side - Burns just got a massive deal. I like the Sweat move more than what Giants did.  But I am curious to see where Bears go next or what they do. Maybe Poles is just going to go after guys that don't hit on first couple days (which isn't necessarily a bad plan - albeit I really like Hunter and feel he is the right type of player to "splurge" on.

Wouldn't be shocked if they just go Armstead on a ST deal though.

Maybe what caught up with the bears is none of those trades - wentz, darnold, rosen, etc worked out at all so now league may be super skeptical on that growth path. ESP with 6 QBs in top 75 or so.

Hey that's 2023 Pro Bowl QB Gardner Minshew you are talking about here.

For all the discussion of Fields passing, I do think the number one thing that teams don't want to deal with is possessions being DOA because he adds another 2-3 sacks per game. It just makes it really hard to be a high scoring offense with those kind of things happening.

  3. people love the joke about the legal tampering period, and though it is probably different than what NFL intended, I think there is value to having a few days for publicly known agreements where players could see if they misjudged with their agents and still had opportunity to back out.

It isn't common, but if so, it allows a player who may be in their "one shot" at a big deal to evaluate. Their agent will get crunched, but it's their fault anyway.

  4. So bears basically punting on AH but the big news is their demand is apparently not to own their own stadium. They will contribute to a publicly funded one.

Some chatter about this being a missed opportunity for the mccaskeys but I dont see, as a bears fan, why I should care about their loss revenue in sucking money from gambling addicts in AH will truly affect the bears operations. The nfl is so shared now in its operating costs. The bears may well get a better deal in their power and revenue collected from the stadium (I.e. non bears events).

I was pro Arlington heights but honestly so grossed out by the ubiquitous of gambling now would much rather this than a franchise half owned by Ballys

If Atlanta signs Cousins, it’s between Vikings and Broncos. Terrible. And you can guarantee, between those two teams and the Raiders, someone is moving up for McCarthy.

We may have to seriously consider trading him to be a backup QB. It’s not just a negotiating tactic, no one wants Fields. And if they are considering keeping him past the draft, it’ll be a disaster. “Wait until draft day,” “Wait until training camp,”Wait until the season when a starter goes down.” Unload the baggage and move on. We’re not going to pick up a 5th year option on him, so why have Fields playing disgruntled and looking over his shoulder?

Well, if cousins signs with falcons we are talking about teams paying for a back up and that opens up a lot more.

    Just…you know. At backup prices.

Given the franchise tag and what is out there and the expanding cap - this feels like a very fair deal on both sides. Hopefully he stays healthy and the improved on ball production (ie turnovers) continues.

I agree. Bears got around what they wanted AAV wise (7th highest cb salary), Jaylon gets to hang his hat on the guarantees. Both are real.

There’s lot of cope among Bears fans trying to explain why Poles traded a 5th round pick for Bates, who likely would have been cut from the Bills anyway.

What’s the most likely scenario here - Poles “got his guy” and wanted to act quickly before he hit the market? Or (I believe the more likely scenario) he was duped by the Bills trying to get something of value before cutting him.

Which, on its own isn’t a big deal - but my God some of the excuses and justifications is like Sox fans trying to rationalize overpaying for a utility infielder.

Could be, though I think Bates could be one of the few players that, if cut, would see a raise on the free agent market compared to their current deal. I'd guess that's where they pinned the value on it, guaranteed his rights plus at a contract they'd like. But they better be right about his evals...they weren't about patrick.

  8. That's the thing. Jameis Winston is 100%, in my opinion, better than Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett. But he's not good enough and the upside isn't there.

I still think fields finds a spot, but I'm concerned given Getsy's job and the warm market for mooney, it really seems like the NFL is pointing at fields as the problem when most of the bears fan base believed it was his situation.

You don’t think one of the three receivers will drop to 9?  I could see one of the QB needy teams jumping on McCarthy early before 9.

even so, but even with 4 QBs, the problem is every single team 3-8 could take a WR easily, and these are three strong receivers. Brugler keeps mocking QB-QB-QB-WR-WR-WR.

Fun fact: we have the worst run differential in all of baseball so far this spring!

Yes!! That’s right folks… we’re the BEST at something already!!!

    yikes

  11. I don't think we'll get one of the top 3 receivers and it's a bummer. But I just can't pull the trigger on one of these edges. I also think they are too light for what Flus has been looking for.

I'd rather trade back from 9 and target McConkey/Thomas Jr.

I can't tell if I'll overrate McConkey too much. You think maybe at first round you'll overrate the 3rd level + physical end zone threat to the point you miss the guy that can get open constantly. But if I have a worry it's that I'll think he'll be St. Brown and instead he's Jerry Jeudy, who is of similar slight build and that lack of physicality really made him much less impactful.

But McConkey is more explosive than Jeudy. Nonetheless, Thomas Jr is a nice secondary piece, but more of a Christian Watson type.
