  1. I guess this makes the Shamrock Shake the runaway winner of the "Worst Item on the McDonald's Menu" contest.
  2. Consider, also, that you might simply not be who the company is looking to hire at that particular time. Not getting the job might not be a reflection of how well you interviewed, but you may simply lack some experience/skills that another prospect has. I've interviewed unsuccessfully for two jobs that I really wanted. I thought I did well on both interviews. Knew the companies, dressed well, didn't feel particularly nervous, etc. One job (postal inspector) was mainly hiring candidates who had law enforcement backgrounds at the time that I interviewed with them (I found this out after the interview from an inspector that I know). I don't have that. I met all the other criteria, though. Just the wrong guy at the time. I actually was flown out to San Francisco by the Inspection Service for the interview/assessment. The assessment was a series of exercises (done individually and with a group of other prospects). I know I did well because I reviewed my answers, etc. with some of the other candidates after the fact. I called my wife after the interview and said that I thought for sure I would get to the next level of the process. The only part of the assessment that I didn't nail was a mock interview of a suspect. I wasn't able to get enough info from the suspect, but I did get quite a bit. However, a guy I hung out with later that night said he got absolutely zero cooperation from the "suspect" because he used a tough guy approach to interview her. The suspect wouldn't even tell him her name. And this took place in front of five people grading the exercise. He was a correctional officer. He got the job. The most recent interview I failed, I knew I had very little chance of getting, but gave it my best anyway. I interviewed for a local fire department. 1800 people took the test. 300 or so were interviewed. They were looking to hire a dozen or so people. I knew going in that I lacked experience, and I lacked relatives on the fire department. I was totally prepared for the interview, though. I did mock interviews with my wife, and got to where I sounded pretty smooth. I think I figured out 3 of the 5 questions that they ended up asking me. One of the other questions was where I got my work ethic from (not too difficult to come up with something for that). It really felt pretty conversational. I didn't get the job, but like I said, I don't really think I had much of a chance going in. Anyway, you won't always get the job, but the interview experience is really good. Next time, definitely practice out loud (preferably with someone). It helps to hear how your answers sound. Research. Try to figure out what you might be asked. Relax. Try to show them who you are. It's not easy in a ten minute sit-down, but if you do things like maintan eye contact, thank them at the end, etc. you'll show them that you at least care enough to fake.
  3. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) This is probably in bad taste, but the WWE now does have an opening for a steroid-abusing latino... Definitely in bad taste. Funny, but bad taste. Remember, Tragedy + Time = Comedy
  4. My brother in law is heading to Iraq for a year on Monday. Thanks to him and all who have served.
  5. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 10:55 AM) I'm not sure that would be a good thing. Soxtalk doesn't really need any more one line posters, who really have nothing to say but post anyway. Good illustration of your point.
  6. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 08:45 PM) I think the Sox will go higher than the 4/52 offer that is out there, but I am hearing they may not have to. I have been told that the Los Angeles Dodgers, not the Angels could be the biggest competitor for Paulie, but that all depends on if they decide to trade Jeff Kent. I just saw the ESPN press conference with Dodgers GM, Steve Phillips, and he said they're considering moving Kent to first base.
  7. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 09:10 AM) does anyone else feel that 4/52 is shockingly (almost insultingly) low in terms of years/total money No.
  8. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 07:57 AM) I believe we're all missing the key issue here-- How the hell do you pronounce her name? Is NG "nug?" I'm pretty sure the "G" is silent.
  9. QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) Right now, i'm on a big cheez-it fix. Those things are god's snack. Also, for the college guys, I've had jimmy john's subs 3 times in the past week. I was good for LaBamba twice a week back in the days of Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em! Now, I working my way through my kids' Halloween candy. Life is good.
  10. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 03:17 PM) I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Eating cereal, not doing anything on Saturday until the afternoon... Also, Before the Internet or the AIM Before semi automatics and weed Before playstation2 or X-bOX Before the 5 hours of homework you put off every night... Way back... I'm talkin' bout hide and go seek at dusk. Red light, Green light. Playing kickball & dodgeball until your porch light came on. Mother May I? Red Rover four square Hula Hoops Running through the sprinkler Happy Meals Getting the privelage to sit in the front seat of the car Christmas morning... Your first day of school Bedtime Prayers and Goodnight Kisses Climbing trees Getting an ice cream off the ice cream truck A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers Jumpin' down the steps Jumpin' on the bed Pillow fights Runnin' till you were out of breath Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt and you almost peed your pants Being tired from playin' all day Your first crush... Rainy days at school meant playing "Heads up 7-Up" in the classroom Remember that? I'm not finished yet... Kool-Aid was the drink of the summer Giving your friends a ride on your handlebars or spokes Wearing your new shoes on the first day of school Class Field Trips When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there. When getting high was swinging on the swingset When $5 seemed like a million, and another dollar a Miracle. When your parents took you to McDonalds and you were so cool. When Toys r Us overuled the "mall" I want to go back to the time when... Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe" Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!" "Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "monopoly" Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. Being old, referred to anyone over 20. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties. Nobody was prettier than Mom Nobody was cooler than Dad Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people" rides at the amusement park. Getting an inch of snow was a dream come true. Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare" Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles. Wow. Great, great post. I don't know if you came up with that stuff yourself or got that from somewhere else, but I swear it made my eyes well up with tears. Not for myself, but for my kids. Kids today have none of the freedom most of us had, and I can't think of anything sadder. Every activity kids have now involves the parents. It's so sad that parents in my neighborhood sit outside and watch their kids (10 & 11 year olds) play. That may sound odd, but kids need to have a little freedom. My oldest kid is six. First grade. I hope he has some of the good times I did. I hope he thinks nobody is cooler than me or prettier than Mom.
  11. I admit, I judged the book by its cover. I thought this thread was about the new Paris Hilton/Controlled Chaos video that's been circulating.
  12. The Colts will lose, and Mercury Morris will pour a little sourmash for himself and his cellmate to celebrate the perfect season in '72.
  13. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 03:30 PM) My english teacher gave me a C about my narrative story about the thrill of watching the white sox this year saying, "You needed to choose a topic that really shows who you are" Seriously, be happy with the C. C basically means average, and that more than adequately describes this paper. My favorite line: "Our excitable announcers moods had started to grow, as all we needed was a base hit to win this critical game."
  14. I'm a little disappointed that the Sox WS victory only merits a corner photo on the newest SI. The cover is PManning and Tom Brady. That couldn't have waited a week? (ps I know they play MNF, but I think that happens more often than the Sox winning the Series)
  15. The thing that bothers me about this is that somehow, some way, the national and Chicago media is looking for ways to make the Sox World Series triumph about the Cubs and their fans' long wait for a championship. They did the same thing after the Red Sox won, too. About thirty seconds after the World Series, some dickhead on tv or radio would say that this must mean that the Cubs are next. Where's the logic?
  16. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 30, 2005 -> 03:13 PM) It's great how the team made "Don't Stop Believin'" it's theme song and all but seriously Journey still sucks. Could someone fill me in. How and why did this horrible song become a part of the Sox pennant chase? Seriously.
  17. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Oct 30, 2005 -> 03:51 PM) I'm still celebrating. Got a bunch of WS gear and a WS Champs flag I just hung outside the house this weekend. It's also kinda nice to get back to a normal life. It had been go to work, then to the bar for the game, sleep 3 hours, back to the bar for a game, sleep for 3 hours..... It is weird that baseball is over. I even miss the BBTN crew a little.I hung my Sox flag about 15 seconds after Konerko gloved the throw from Uribe. I'm sure the flag pisses off my cubfan neighbor every time he leaves his house. And I couldn't be happier. It stays up until Veteran's day, when it will be replaced by the only flag more significant.
  18. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Oct 30, 2005 -> 01:19 PM) Anybody else wonder if SNL is reached a point where it is so not funny that it merits consideration for cancellation. I do not think it will ever be cancelled, but it is so sad. No real talent is willing to host the show because it is so not funny. There is no talent on the show. I just wonder who writes that crap?? The biggest problem that I have with SNL is that it relies too much on the guest host to be funny. The guest host doesn't need to be in every skit. Put them in 3 or 4 throughout the show. Most of them are so stiff it's not even funny. Another problem I have is that nobody can seem to memorize their lines. Isn't memorizing lines one of their job requirements? It's pathetic that they show up on national tv and so obiously read every line from cue cards. That said, I hardly ever watch.
  19. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Oct 28, 2005 -> 07:53 PM) I am in the camp now of wanting him back and I wasn't before. That said, I am not in favor of them doing something unreasonable to get him back. He is not the face of the franchise, Ozzie Guillen is. To treat Konerko as the team superstar would go in the face of what just worked. If signing Konerko to 5 years, 70 million now prevents us from being able to keep Mark, Jose, Freddy, and Jon over the next few years then that will be a shame. I guess you're right, that Ozzie is the face of the organization, but I really meant more that on a national level, the player who distinguished himself is PK. The pitching collectively was great, but "chicks dig the longball." Konerko came up big several times. I think it would look really cheap if he is not resigned. And the Sox cannot afford bad publicity. I agree that I wouldn't want his contract to mean losing important piecesof the team. That's why I mentioned losing older guys or guys who could benefit from a change of scenery. Some hard decisions will have to be made regardless, but I think I speak for most Sox fans when I say, "I have faith in Kenny!"
  20. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Oct 28, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) Hopefully that bomb off Oswalt to Right is a good sign of a new approach Similarly, it would do Pods some good to really focus on bunting for hits next season. Brett Butler is available - the Sox should consider bringing him in as a spring training instructor next year.
  21. Is it absolutely a done deal that Rooney will not be back next year?
  22. Going into the final year without a new contract, KW basically said to Konerko, "prove it to me." Prove you deserve a big contract. He did. I was one of those guys who always thought PK was expendable. I don't anymore. He became the "face" of the orginization this postseason. The Sox need to sign him for market value immediately. If that pushes them over whatever dollar amount they have budgeted for the team for 2006, so be it. They can figure out, after PK has signed, how to reduce salaries in other areas to meet that budget. It might mean losing Marte or Everett. It might mean losing Frank or El Duque. It might be time. Have a young guy like Anderson fill a roster spot.
  23. I thought the pre- and post-game shows lacked substance, but I have to say that the little montage (sp?) set to music at the end of the last game was pretty cool.
  24. Crede needs to learn that he can't pull every pitch. Until he learns that, there will be a frustrating amount of pop-ups.
  25. Completely assinine. Take each game, play by play, and replace the Sox with the Yankees and the Astros with the Dodgers, and everyone would be calling this the best WS ever. It's a knock on the two teams who played, not the quality of play or the intrigue and intensity of each and every game. Not one game was a clunker, and there's almost always at least one clunker in a seven game series.
