QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) Melky is a one dimensional player, with that one dimension being his hit tool. He is not the worst defender, but he is not good. His arm is not a liability, but it's not a strength. He has a bit of power, but he's not a 20 homer guy. He is not the slowest guy, but there's a reason he doesn't have a stolen base this year. Thus, given all of those attributes, Melky Cabrera rates as a slightly above average player, currently on pace for just under 1.0 WAR for the season. Thus, teams in contention will be looking for other alternatives in the meantime, using Melky as a fall back option. It really wouldn't surprise me if the Sox have a couple packages lined up with teams for Melky, but Rick Hahn is letting them do their due diligence in seeing if they can't find someone better. Hahn isn't dumb and he knows what Melky Cabrera is. C Melky will move, and I think he'll move before the deadline, and he'll be moved for a guy we probably haven't heard much of. Good post but he is slightly above replacement, not slightly above average. Todd is slightly above average. So is Jose. Average is good. If the Sox had more average players the last decade they win quite a bit more.

Q traded to Cubs/Jimenez, Cease ++ to Sox
chitownsportsfan replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jul 17, 2017 -> 05:00 PM) That's a good point, but my question relates more to the margin between this offer and others. I'd really hate Q giving the Cubs a whole lot more market share over the next three years because of Bryant Flete, who will probably never make it to MLB, for example. You can choose to believe him if you want (and I see no reason not to) but Hahn said point blank "it was by far the best offer". I'm guessing that means that probably nobody else was offering two top 100 guys, and that nobody else was including a top #5ish stud like Eloy if they were. -

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jul 17, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) No need to resort to personal jabs like calling me irrational and hateful just to disagree or make a contrary point while claiming that everyone agrees with you. Listen man, I feel no differently than countless true White Sox fans about this trade, and I know *a lot* of them. But I understand how cub fans are ecstatic about this and others who do not feel invested in one of baseball's biggest rivalries or perhaps are unfamiliar with the history of the two franchises and their fan bases may not fully understand it or care about it. "“I think we are back,” Contreras said after the Cubs completed their three-game throttling with an 8-0 victory Sunday. “Back to where we were last year. I hope we can be like this for a lot of games.” Club president Theo Epstein delivered them another ace in lefty Jose Quintana — a blockbuster deal with the crosstown White Sox that came with more than a subtle kick in the rear urging the boys to kick it into gear. The message, it seems, was received. On Sunday, Quintana took the ball for the first time as a Cub and validated Epstein’s gamble: Seven shutout innings, just three hits allowed and 12 strikeouts — tying a franchise record for a pitcher in his debut. “I’m really happy to be here,” Quintana said with the relief of a man transported from last place in the AL Central and a life of perpetually poor run support.Yet, he’s probably not as happy as his new teammates. Had the Cubs played much worse in the first half, Epstein and Co. might have had to ponder selling assets, rather than adding. Instead, they plucked the gem of this deadline before the market even opened. Quintana has pitched into at least the seventh inning in 51% of his starts since 2015. He’s pitched between 200 and 208 innings the past four seasons, precisely the reliable salve the Cubs rotation needed. And he’s under club control at between $8.5 million and $10.5 million per year potentially through 2020. It’s impossible to quantify if the Cubs’ enhanced self-esteem this weekend was more the intangible boost from the front office, or facing Baltimore’s major league-worst pitching staff. It’s not surprising which narrative the Cubs prefer. “It gives us that extra confidence,” says reigning NL MVP Kris Bryant, who hit his 19th homer among three hits Sunday. “We have a lot of the same core that we had last year, and we won the whole thing. To add him for an extra three years, too — I think it’s a great move.“I think our offense came alive here. Obviously, Jose did an unbelievable job. Today was a great day for us feeling good about ourselves.” In fact, it’s almost impossible to find a Cub who isn’t trending upward. So, he dominated, spiking his curveball for swinging strikeouts early in the game, leaning on his fastball and changeup late. He finished with a flourish, striking out Mark Trumbo looking and inducing a double-play grounder from Chris Davis to end the seventh, greeted with a high-five from Maddon upon reaching the dugout. “He knew he had done well,” says Maddon. “He’s a low-key fellow, but his method is outstanding. “From his perspective, coming over from the White Sox to the Cubs in the middle of the season, There’s got to be something going on in there. And he handled it extremely well.” Link Edited to add link: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2017/...6987316c62215a5 one of baseball's biggest rivalries? Maybe among a certain subset of meatball fans on both sides. Seriously, the Cubs aren't even in the the f***ing AL. At best you play them a couple times every year and then in the WS. And the article you linked is just classic "well I gotta write something with a narrative arc" filler. Personally I'm thrilled for Q. I'm happy he's finally going to get more attention, and perhaps some wins as well. I couldn't give a f*** less about how he helps the Cubs. The Sox just got perhaps the best pure hitting prospect in MLB back and a guy that throws 101 and it projects as his 2nd best pitch for him. We got as well as we gave. I understand that LIVING in Chicago might make it SEEM like the Cubs and Sox are big rivals but they aren't, not in any sense on the field anyways. -

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jul 17, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) It has been hard for Epstein and cub fans to wipe the smirks off their faces since Quintana's start. Helping the cubs to another Word Series was not what most White Sox fans wanted Hahn to do with Quintana. He had other choices. I wanted the best deal for the Sox,and they got it. -
I am giddy thinking of all the walks Eloy and Moncada are going to take over the next decade on the south side. These are not your typical WS tools only prospects.

Looks like 3-5 is the likely range with small odds of moving up to 2 or out of the top 5. That's fine IMO. Number one would be great but the Sox still have too much talent to lose 100+ it seems.

Sox acquire SS prospect Yeyson Yrizarri

QUOTE (GermanSock @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 05:26 PM) They could have used the money but could not sign anyone above 300k or so. So they could sign a bunch of low profile guys but that doesn't really make sense as the the talent pool is not that large. It's just a better way to spend the money given the rules, and the sort of smart move clubs like the Cubs and Astros make on the regular. Good to see Hahn is really getting work done. -
Frazier to Boston Rumors getting heavy
chitownsportsfan replied to whitesoxwinner's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) I guess I interpreted it differently than that, but I may be wrong. Right, it's similar to Abreu with the Sox right now. It would take a ton to acquire him because of the goodwill he's built with the organization. Even in a down year, he is much more valuable to the Tigers than anyone else. It may be fun to speculate what it would take, but I'd say the odds are similar to Cabrera playing for the Red Sox as they are for the White Sox. Cabrera probably has negative trade value unless the Tigers are pitching in 70-120 million, and I don't see them doing that. He's a 3-4 WAR player going forward, at best, and he's being paid like a 6 WAR guy. He's on one of the worst contracts in baseball given his decline, which was incredibly predictable. He's 34 and his been injury prone for a few years now. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2017 -> 03:37 PM) I was just going to ask that question. Do they actually go out and give these guys physicals? Of course they do it's a multi billion dollar industry. You do due diligence. -

I love it. Game the system as much as possible. This is a way more interesting prospect than anybody they could have gotten for under 300k, even if they signed a few of those types. -

The cubs won a WS last year, what's the worst thing that happens they win another? f*** that, help the Sox, if it helps the Cubs that's fine we need to help ourselves anyway possible. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 14, 2017 -> 11:40 PM) I'll believe it when it comes from a credible source but Ockimey definitely seems to be the type of guy they've been targeting as of late. Certainly seems they want OBP and power combo. If that is the return I will take it. One b- guy and two c types. -
Ideally you'd like to add more up the middle prospects at C,CF,SS. But every team can say that. At this point they can perhaps start to consider positional need, which is pretty amazing considering where they were entering this season.

Do the White Sox now have the best farm system in MLB?

How do you rate the rebuild so far?
chitownsportsfan replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm putting it at a 9 depending on how the rest of this season plays out. This is really incredible. From zero top 100 guys to potentially 12-14 once Hahn is done dealing. -
Time to get moncada up. He has nothing much to gain against AAA hitting IMO. Not having a crazy year slash wise only solid, but he should start getting MLB seasoning IMO. Just to keep him hungry and to be around other pros in the Show.

7/9 games (Lopez, Flores + Futures game)

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) Given that there are times when the decision to rest/rehab or do TJS isn't a clear-cut one, I don't think it's totally crazy that he might do some light tossing even in the presence of what is or will be a major overuse injury. Sure but we are talking 2-3 weeks rest minimum, not "we'll try it out the next day". Sounds like he might have a forearm strain. -
Fangraphs trade value series (Q #42, Moncada #41)
chitownsportsfan replied to maxjusttyped's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) If trade value wasn't fluid, then there'd be no point to doing yearly lists because you could just make one and call it a day. The fluidity makes the exercise more fun. It's fun but meaningless. Maybe I'm just getting cynical and old. -
Fangraphs trade value series (Q #42, Moncada #41)
chitownsportsfan replied to maxjusttyped's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I used to really enjoy these from FG but it's become obvious that teams don't really value these guys the same way FG (or at least Cameron) do. And even then, it's so fluid that trying to do a "yearly" list doesn't really work. What was Aaron Judge's trade value in April? What will it be when he comes back to earth next summer? Just an example. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) If they are letting him throw a day later, I can't imagine they think the worst. Sounds like that's the case. If the pain/inflammation is already subsided enough to throw the next day...it's probably not serious. -
Luckily for the draft pick, the team is regressing offensively and unless Lopez comes up and dominates I don't see much positive regression for the SP either. This is looking closer to a 70 win team than an 80 win team. For a while it wasn't really clear. I will be happy anywhere in the top 5. It looks like a pretty strong draft at the top from what I can tell. Sox should be able to add a position player stud in the 3-5 range.

There's two common types of injury to the meniscus, which is like a pad that your knee joint uses as cushioning, lateral and medial tears. Usually a lateral tear is considered worse than a medial tear but often times in young athletes if it's minor enough to where he was playing on it, rest is the prescribed course of action and if the pain persists than you go under the knife for a repair. If it's a one time thing there's no worry but if it's something chronic for him it will impact his career and be something to worry about. As for the idea that this injury was caused by being in DR that's just laughable. This could happen to any young athlete, anywhere, especially one ramping up activity after a period of inactivity in their chosen sport. The Sox no doubt have very good doctors and facilities down there to evaluate him, that's not even a minor concern IMO. If he does have to have surgery, which is unlikely given the seeming severity, he will probably have it done in the States. For now we just have to wait and see how his knee feels in a week or two. The best case will be he's back in action, the worst case will be the pain and inflation persists and he has to have a surgical repair. But even then, it's a very common procedure, NBA players have it quite frequently, and as I side, unless it becomes a chronic issue, it's a one time repair and the player returns 100%.
