  1. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 02:27 PM) If by little value you mean he has a shot at being our leftfielder next year, then I guess he has little value. If you read Merkin's piece on Whitesox.com on Fields, you get the sense that a positional change for Fields is in the future and it's even discussed by Razor Shines. No way he gets moved for Tom Gordon. Here's the article you mention. I for one am surprised he hasn't had some Playing time in LF already. And a bit disappointed too. It'd be very nice to use Podsednik as our version of Rowand (trade bait) this offseason if we felt like Fields could fill that role next year.
  2. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 02:19 PM) So how come when a Muslim bomb blows up innocent Muslims, it doens't spawn more people willing to fight against the terrorists? Hmmm. How many people have you heard about who enlisted in our army after 9/11? (With Israel, it's a bit of a different story, since military service is mandatory there IIRC)
  3. So I figga this ought to be posted somewhere...a judge ruled that the FBI Raid on Rep. Jefferson's office was in fact legal and constitutional.
  4. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) Cliff Politte v. 2006 (from the left side) Hard throwing reliever who's been around for a little while, all the sudden has a breakout year. I'll take it. If Politte could throw as hard as Thornton, he'd be doing a LOT better this year.
  5. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 01:51 PM) Chone Figgins appears to be available, he can put up similar offensive numbers to Podsednik while playing much better defense with an excellent arm and bring some great versatility to the team. Can someone please explain to me why a team that is 2 games out of the lead in their division and is sporting one of the best starting staffs in the AL might be looking to sell?
  6. QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 01:28 PM) I suppose you think Juan Pierre is one of them too.... :headshake Pods will never get respect on this board, oldest news around. I'm am STUNNED someone has not brought up Jerry Owens name and the fact that we needed to call him four months ago. Nevermind the fact that Pods increased his average by over .150 points over the course of the first half. Hasn't Owens increased his average by quite a bit over the first half also? Considering he's up to .249, and IIRC he was down around the Mendoza line for a while.
  7. So wait, the Mets aren't even sure that they want to give up Milledge for Zito, and we're going to get him for Vazquez, then decide we don't want him and deal him for Schmidt? Hell, if we could pull off the first part of that deal, hold onto the kid!
  8. QUOTE(Drew @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) The duck snort derby is overrated, I more a fan of the gork shot derby. Would they have as many fielders as MLB has out there for the HR Derby? Cause that'd only add to the fun.
  9. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) You're assuming we win the division, right? Wouldn't The Tigers play the Angels if they won the central? I'm pretty sure that the matchups depend on the final records of each team.
  10. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) We're 14th in starters' ERA?! People saying we're 4th must be the ERA of the entire pitching staff. 14th is terrible for how much money they're making and the expectations we have for them. Interestingly, both are right. We're 4th in terms of starters ERA in the AL, we're 14th in terms of starters ERA in MLB. But since the NL doesn't have that DH, with the exception of the phenomenal year being had by Detroit, usually NL teams will find themselves having lower ERA's than AL teams. (Oh, and we dropped from 4th to 6th in terms of AL starter's ERA yesterday, unfortunately.)
  11. Not saying any of it makes sense, just posting from the chat.
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 09:47 AM) The problem is that Israel has never put up with ANY of the citizens being murdered or kidnapped, so when Palestians do something along those lines they know full well that there will be retaliation. Its kind of like kicking a sleeping pitbull, and then suing when it attacks you afterwards. I know its not that simple, but the organizations that decide to kidnap and kills Israelis don't seem to care that it is their direct actions that lead to the deaths of their fellow Muslims. How much credit falls on their own shoulders because of their actions? On the other hand, I'd say there's even more depth to this mess than you're giving it. The terrorist groups know full well that if they manage to successfully hurt Israel, Israel is going to respond in a measure far more severe than whatever the terrorist group could pull off. Case in point; kidnap 1 soldier, and Israel responds with a near-invasion that kills dozens. But here's the real key point; that's exactly what a terrorist group would want. Why? Because Israel's action only furthers the cause of the terror groups, most notably by helping those terror groups find recruits. When a person's mother dies because Israel cuts off the power and it causes medicine to go bad and become unusable, well, that's the sort of thing that feeds into these terror groups. When an Israeli bomb kills a bunch of people, some of them children, all it does is create even more people willing to fight against Israel. Which is exactly what an organization determined to fight Israel would want. This is how the cycle of violence out there goes. If any of these groups are able to pull off attacks on Israel, they know the Israelis will respond, and it will feed their organizations for years to come.
  13. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) I didn't even realize that they had the lowest amount of innings as a pen, especially after last night. Now if a starting pitcher comes in for relief do those innings count for starting pitching or for relief? They would count as relief.
  14. That stat has been true the whole freaking year. Which is why, a.) Jenks is the key to this bullpen, because a lot of days he's all we need, b.) the 11th guy out of the bullpen isn't that big of a deal because even guy 10 only gets limited innings, and c.) why we need the starting pitching to step it up the 2nd half, because we're going to win or lose on their backs.
  15. It seems to me that usually one of the guys you least expect to make a run always winds up having a very good Derby. Dye and Glaus are probably the 2 least-known on the list, so I would be willing to bet at least one of them makes the finals.
  16. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 08:42 AM) Did Gordon burn his bridges a bit when he left here? Did we insult him with our low ball contract offer? And would he be happy again in a set up role for a kid like Jenks? It's one thing to set up for Mariano Rivera when you want to close. It is another thing to set up for the new kid on the block, no matter how successful he's been up to this point. Wasn't one of the reasons he went to Philly the fact that he wanted to close, and didn't want to just be a setup man?
  17. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) DaimlerChrysler recently announced that they'll bring the SmartCar to the US in mid-2007-- www.smartusa.com, and Tangos are right around the corner -- www.commutercars.com. Both have brighter futures than traditional hybrids, IMHO. Chrysler's been talking about bringing those over here for it seems like 5 years now.
  18. Damn. I don't like this. Why? Because I'm expecting Zito to set Buehrle's market value.
  19. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 06:01 PM) Abreu is a better fit than Soriano. I'm not Mr. OBP but they really don't have enough to be passable. Vlad's reputation now exceeds his production. THey are desperate for an impact bat behind him Supposedly Philly asked for Ervin Santana for Abreu. I believe I heard the laughter from that one all the way up here in Pasadena.
  20. QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 09:28 PM) If I did have contact with every other team, I'd call the Padres because Woody Williams is at the top of my list. Then I'd call the Cubs about Prior. The Cubs would be happy to take some combination of McCarthy and another player off our hands for Prior.
  21. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 09:30 PM) Wow, you must have super hearing. Are you kidding? At this point, the whole city of Chicago is adapted to hearing that sound. It's like the ice cream truck.
  22. QUOTE(greg775 @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 08:29 PM) How bout Jones for McCarthy or Garland? One or the other. Because the value of each of those pitchers is roughly similar...
  23. Well, I'm gonna really go out on a limb here and say this game is over.
  24. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) They have out-played us today. I think hitting is about the same, their starters are better, and bullpens are about same. I would give them the edge. Boston's starters are #10 in the AL in ERA, CHW's starters are #4. Boston's Bullpen is #6 and we're #7 in ERA. Boston's offense is #3 in the AL, we're #1.
