  1. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) I love Andruw. I wanted him back more than AJ. You wanted to keep a 4th OF more than your starting catcher? Who was going to start at catcher if you let AJ go?
  2. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) You know who else had good balance? Yaz. What about Catfish?
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 01:35 PM) Grey may hurt the club more than help. Hopefully he will only be used as cannon fodder when we are up big or down big.
  4. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 01:33 PM) In 2010 with a 0.3 UZR In 2009 with a 2.4 UZR In 2006 with a 1.9 UZR 2007 w/ the Mets was the only year where he was below average in LF. What about 2007 and 2008? How many innings did he play in the OF? I don't put much stock into defensive metrics, defense is very hard to measure statistically. I know watching him play in Pittsburgh the last couple years he is not a good OF. How do the other defensive metrics other than UZR measure his defense?
  5. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 01:14 PM) Alright, well then I disagree. He was not really f***in bad in the of. He was just fine in spring training. It's funny that this team can own the 2nd worst fielder in the MLB last year, and fans can still be fooled into thinking he is better in the OF than someone who has been a historically above average LF. Did anyone say Milledge was better or worse than CQ in the field? When has Milledge been an above average LF? His defense has been an abomination for several years now. If he could play some defense he wouldn't have had to sign a minor league contract this offseason. Even if Milledge was better in the field than Quentin, who cares? Quentin has proven in the past that he is capable of murdering the ball. Milledge has proven he can be let go by both the Nationals and the Pirates.
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 12:30 PM) I wouldn't call Lackey a weak pitcher, and Buchholz is pretty damn good too. And it's not like they don't have the minor league depth to go out and acquire a pitcher if they need one. WHIP up to 1.419, K/9 down, BB/9 up, history of injury issues......maybe weak was not the right word for it but if I am Boston and I am going to spend 100+million dollars on a player I would have gone after Lee, someone who is a proven pressure performer and can put two guys that are probably on the downside (Lackey and Beckett) a slow down in my rotation. No doubt they have the prospects to get a deal done, but that is always easier said than done depending on who is going to be on the market.
  7. People b****ing about Milledge being DFA instead of Teahen need to get with the program and accept that the guy isn't going anywhere. It makes no sense from a financial standpoint to eat 10 million over the next 2 years just to keep marginal all bat no glove player like Milledge. It just isn't going to happen, no team in baseball would eat 10 million dollars for the 25th or 26th man on the team.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) I just really don't get this from a baseball perspective. The White Sox of the past 3-4 seasons have historically stunk against left-handers. Lastings had a .926 OPS against them last season, with a near .800 career mark in 500 at bats vs lefties. He was exactly what this team has craved and needed for quite some time off the bench, a lefty killer who can sub in in the outfield and at DH. It's just quite silly to release him in order to keep Brent freaking Lillibridge. OR all-in and sack up and release Teahen's worthless ass. He is a lefty killer who can DH. Milledge is horrendous in the OF and has absolutely no business playing there. Fact of the matter is if you send down Tiny Brent your only backup OF is Teahen, who is also awful but slightly less awful than Milledge (think of Teahen as leprosy and Milledge as the plague). We need someone who can play some OF defense to get CQ out of there late in games more than we need more punch off the bench.
  9. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 12:14 PM) Rays Lineup: Fuld LF Damon DH Zobrist 2B Johnson 1B Upton CF Joyce RF Rodriguez 3B Shoppach C Brignac SS Price on the hill. Man that lineup is weak sauce, Tampa is very unimpressive with Longoria out of the lineup. Sox need to keep Tampa's losing streak going.
  10. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) From the looks of it, Boston is starting to look like the 2008 Detroit Tigers. All talk on paper, no results on the field (so far). They'll work it out though. That Tigers team was a lot more flawed and less-talented than this Boston one. I am not as confident they will work it out enough to make the playoffs. Once the weather heats up they will start clubbing teams to death but their rotation is very weak after Lester. If the Beckett and Lackey of last year show up again this year they are in a lot of trouble. I never understood spending all that money on Carl Crawford, they should have used that money and spent it on Lee.
  11. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 4, 2011 -> 10:33 PM) I can root for him regardless. At least during the regular season. He's by far the best to ever play the game at what he does. I can respect that, no matter what uniform he wears (long as it's not a Cubs uniform). Agreed. Even though he is less important as an overall player than Jeter, he should be put up onto the same pedestal as "the Captain" as far as Yankee greats go from this era.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) Hawks are 3-1 vs Wings this year... just saying. Playoffs are a whole new ballgame, you know this. Would you rather play the charmin soft perennial choking Canucks or the veteran battle tested Red Wings? I know if it came to a game 7 I would much rather play against Vancouver and greasy Bob then the Wings.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 01:02 PM) Killer? Marmol is filthy but walks about a guy an inning and that will eventually bite him. His setup guys are nothing spectacular, then it goes downhill in a hurry in that pen. Solid starting 5? They had auditions among a bunch of marginal pitchers for not just the 5th spot, but the 4th spot as well. Their #3, Garza, has had an awful spring, and their #2, Z, is... well, he's Z, who has been in decline for years now. They have a solid starting 1. That pitching staff is well below average. Their defense is also terrible - one of the worst last season and likely only worse this year. And you really think that none of CIN, STL or MIL will win 90 games? Sorry, but I saw the Cubs as the 4th best team going in, maybe 3rd now with MIL's injury issues. Agreed, if anything I think their pitching looks VERY suspect. Dempster is decent but after that it is a lot of question marks. Z has good stuff when his head his on right (which isn't often) but he also hasn't pitched more than 200 innings since 2007. I feel like Garza is going to get torched without the Wrigley wind blowing out and with that sieve of a defense the Cubs have behind him. Wells as a 4 isn't terrible but if Zambrano gets hurt/goes crazy all of a sudden Wells is your 3. Cashner has a good arm but if he is walking people forget it. Their best offensive players are old and declining, Castro is a good player but could easily fall victim to the sophomore slump. Wood is a nice 8th inning but I would never trust the guy healthwise. To me the Brewers are the best in that division, and I expect the Cubs to finish closer to the Astros then I do the Brewers.
  14. QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) Anyone else looking forward to getting a glimpse of the Pirates against the Cubs? I'm not a fan of the Bucs overall philosophy, but I feel like guys like McCutchen, Alvarez and Doumit can be Major League stars if they were on a better team. If they had any starting pitching worth talking about, they could fight to go .500 and mess up that division race like Cleveland does in the AL Central every year. I don't think Cleveland will be messing up any race this year, their team looks horrible. After looking at their rotation I was thinking they would probably finish last......until I looked at Kansas City's rotation. Jeff Francis as a #2 starter? Bruce Chen starting at all? Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur as 2/3 of your starting outfield.....now THAT is a REAL BAD baseball team. They better hope this all world farm system they have pans out, because they don't have diddly on the 25 man.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 10:41 AM) Dallas is in a bit of a tailspin and Calgary has played two more games, so the playoff chances are looking better. The 8 spot sets up a showdown with Vancouver, which I wouldn't be very confident about it. I know the Hawks have the mental edge and Luongo has been their b****, but these are different Canucks & Hawks teams, so it could be tough. Then again, anything can happen in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I would much rather play Vancouver than Detroit in the first round. Vancouver is dealing with a lot of injury issues on the blueline and also lost Malhotra for the season. A Hawks Nucks matchup in the first round has the stink of upset all over it.
  16. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 08:00 AM) ask him when he is leaving Hatred for Brooks......why?
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 31, 2011 -> 03:44 PM) I feel like Reds are due for a huge letdown season, as could be one of those years where pitching is down for them due to high-pressured innings last year. If Greinke can get healthy, Brewers can win this division. I do think the Cubs lineup will be pretty solid for the first few months until Fukudome and Soriano fade away. The Brewers NEED to win that division after the moves they made in the offseason, they better keep Greinke off the basketball court. Agreed on the Reds being due for a letdown, you know the Dusty effect will be coming on full force for their young pitchers.
  18. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 31, 2011 -> 11:08 AM) the primary concern is injuries. These contract come back to haunt you more than they are successful. I would never go more than 4 years for those reasons. JR got bit hard with the Dotson, Bannister and Burns contracts i the mid-80's, along with Navarro later on. The only one that has worked is the Buerhle contract and people complain that he isn't living up to that contract. I agree with JR that these contracts don't make sense and KW needs continue to find young pitching in trades. The Sox have been proven right time and time again with this policy with all of the expensive garbage that is littering the rotations of many teams that spent big bucks. Heck, I would like to see just three 5-7 year contracts given to free agent pitchers that actually worked out.
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 31, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) If the Sox had done this earlier it wouldn't be a problem now, just like in 5 years if they don't change they will still have the same problems. It's something that needs to be addressed now, it won't go away. And there is a balance that can be found, the Sox added what, $20 mill to the payroll? If they signed a DLee for the $5 million less than Konerko than you have your draft money right there, while still keeping the team very competitive for the division. Lee just started playing in games a week and a half ago due to his wrist which is still bothering him. People should be thankful that the Sox didn't sign him to replace Konerko. Word out of Orioles camp is that he doesn't look like he has recovered from the injury yet. I wouldn't be shocked if he only played 100 games this year, and who knows how effective he will be when he does play.
  20. If I were the Rangers I am not sure I would expect much out of Webb, he got scratched from pitching batting practice the other day and I am pretty sure he has yet to throw in an actual game this spring. It is coming up on 2 years since he actually threw in a game, so who knows IF he is able to come back how effective he can even be.
  21. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 11:56 PM) This is gonna make me sound like Dan Bernstein, but I think that start of the game is just stupid. These are two teams that play each other like once a year, and can only face each other in the Stanley Cup Finals, so they are not huge rivals. It's one thing to fight to get your team pumped up or for payback, but three fights to start the game is a waste of time IMO, not to forget Burish's fight five minutes in. There is a lot of bad blood between Ott and Campbell from a couple years back so its no surprise that they danced right off the bat. Ott is a major turd anyways. Last time these teams played in Boston they racked up 140+ penalty minutes, so there is definitely a healthy dislike despite the fact they don't play terribly often.
  22. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) Jokes aside, and I'm sure many Bears fans are happy to see Favre go, making fun of or hoping for a person to get/become physically injured is never...funny. This is exactly what I'm talking about with Bears fans acting their finest. It's not enough that they beat Favre the majority of the end of his career, it's not enough that they beat Favre 40-14 yesterday...it's picking this as their favorite moment, or wishing injury upon him that makes me dislike Bears fans. Those other things should be enough...but they aren't. I despise that mentality in sports. It embodies everything we learned to NOT do in sports as kids...and doing it as an adult...and laughing about it. This is not a unique behavior for Bears fans, this is sports fans in general. You should come to Baltimore during Steelers week sometime and hear some of the s*** that comes out the mouths of Ravens fans, Bears fans are actually pretty tame compared to these guys. Despite the beatings he has taken from the Bears of late (Bears are 9-3 against Favre's teams the last six seasons) Favre is 23-13 against the Bears in his career, including a 10 year period where he was 18-2 against Chicago....of course Bears fans hate the guy. Couple that with his douchey attention mongering behavior the last 5 years along with most of the media fighting each other to see who can get on their knees in front of the guy first and its easy to see where the hate comes from. At this point most NFL fans, not just Bears fans, just want this guy to go away, he's very annoying. Bears fans just have a particular hate for him because of all the ass whippings he has given us over the years.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) You can't have it in Chicago, giving the Bears an extra home game all together is completely unfair to the Vikings. Like it was unfair for the Saints in 2005 when they had a "home game" against the Giants in the Meadowlands. Something tells me if they were playing the Giants this week instead of next week they would have no problem moving the game to New Jersey.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) We get the exact same thing every time someone gets life in prison or the death penalty though. The criminal in that case ruins a lot of peoples lives, and we allow for society, and in particular the people who were harmed, to find satisfaction in their punishment. Hell, if Usama Bin Laden was killed tomorrow, I'd expect nationwide celebrations, and I'd expect everyone here to participate. The fact that they're incorporated shouldn't automatically mean that we shouldn't want them punished if they destroy the lives of thousands of people, and we should be fully justified in taking satisfaction in their punishment. And if they're not punished, then we have every right to be outraged (just like we have every right to be outraged with all the people on Wall Street who got rewarded for destroying the global economy, and just like we should celebrate if any of them ever get charged with anything). Will the dancing in the streets when you look at the unemployment number jump up after BP goes out of business? Don't get me wrong, BP completely FUBARd the gulf coast and they should have to pay for all of that, and if that happens to put them out of business then those are the consequences of their actions, but I certainly wouldn't feel any happiness from that outcome. Comparing putting BP out of business to killing Bin Laden is laughable and completely over the top.
  25. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 08:35 PM) I hate this time of year... I only casually follow Maryland politics and I can spot the heroic stretches of the truth and distortions in the Ehrlich/O'Malley ads (call me biased but Ehrlich does it more). There's SO many of them though, that's the thing I hate. The most ridiculous ad isn't for a candidate though, we have a question on the ballot whether to allow slots at Arundel Mills or not, the biggest mall in this region (we had this on the ballot whether to allow slots in the state in 2008 and it passed easily). The "anti" slots are funded by groups who aren't so much worried about slots in principle but stand to lose money if they end up at the mall and not where they want them... anyway most of their arguments against are silly. One of them had a girl who looked to be about 9 they had saying "I just don't think it's a good idea." Really? What the f*** does she know? She's 9! The slots ads are some of the most obnoxious I have ever seen. I laugh every time they show the one with that little girl on it, are we going to ask that little girl what she thinks about the budget or who to vote for in the county executive race too? One of the ones that really cracks me up nowadays is the new Dutch Ruppersberger one with his Mom. Dutch will never forget where he came from! LOL I have no idea what the solution is to some of these ridiculous ads that appear every election, but I do know they are getting stupider and more ridiculous every year.
