  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) Oh you gotta listen to more Rush and Hannity then. this is a "big" story. Apparently Obama is a terrorist sympathizer. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8630.html Don't have time to read it atm but I'm assuming that's that board he sits on where the guy who is a convicted felon also sits, which automatically means that Obama not only is ideologically in line with whatever the guy went to prison for, he actually had something to do with it and continues to support it to this day. About right?
  2. I went to a Sox-O's game last year at Camden Yards (I think I was there for the whole series actually) and Contreras was pitching then... ugh. I wish I could see Buehrle pitch here for once... at least I get to see Floyd which would be good if he pans out. I'm gonna be at both games though, Camden Yards is a great stadium.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) No, it's ridiculous to COUNT ON that. That's basically what Shack did in his post. If that's the case, then I agree in principle. But let's just say I (like you) have a strong feeling about Quentin.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) Basing an argument on "potential" is pretty silly. Rocco Baldellia and Joe Borchard had a lot of potential as well. lol what is the argument? I'm not even making one. Your argument seems to be that it's ridiculous to say that a guy who has shown tons of power potential (despite being held back by injuries) could hit 25-30 homers, if for no other reason than he hasn't done it yet, and I replied saying he has the tools, he's shown the ability to use them, and it isn't that ridiculous to think he could do that. I'm not even saying anything controversial. I could see if I was saying Brian Anderson could hit 20-25 homers based on his talent or Jerry Owens could start playing like Ichiro.
  5. That doesn't mean anything besides getting me a laugh.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) Carlos Quentin has done crap in 2+ years in the majors and isn't a lock to live up to the expectations. You might want to wait for him to play a full season at a reasonably high level before anointing him as a middle-of-the-lineup replacement for Dye. I didn't "anoint" him as anything. I said I could see it, and what he could potentially be. To look at his batting average without any consideration of circumstances and say "he hasn't done crap" is a little extreme and unfair though (mind you, I was saying the same thing about him needing to prove he can play before the season started, against all the hyperbole and outrageous expectations for Quentin and Fields)

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 12:24 PM) I don't believe that Fields got time at any OF position in the minors. All the more reason to not want him learning the job on the fly in the majors. I could see if he was 20, 21, or if he was just completely awful defensively like Ryan Braun. But in baseball terms he's pretty old.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) Quentin a 25-30 HR hitter? Where's your evidence for that? Carlos Quentin was/is a five-tool prospect who has shown plenty of power potential in the major leagues. It's not a stretch at all to say that. Once he's fully healthy I, like many people, could see him hitting between 3rd and 5th in this lineup by 2010 as the eventual replacement for Dye.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) I think Fields in RF would be a nightmare. Oh god, wouldn't it. I don't even want him at LF (with this surplus of OFs we currently have) let alone trying to learn RF, at the age of 26.
  10. Anderson's ceiling as a 4 1/2-5 tool player is showing signs of starting to manifest itself. He's kind of a paradox right now. He might be finally ready to live up to the potential but there's no way to know, because there are 3 better OFs ahead of him.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) I don't think that means what you think it means. A bellweather is an indicator of the state of things generally in a certain environment, so, you are saying he's indicative of the Dems right now? I think you mean he's a windsock, or a flip-flopper, or something along those lines. I didn't know Jay Mariotti was a Senator. Sorry that was too easy, it was like a fastball up in the zone.
  12. Why's the thread title what it is? I don't think Owens's priorities have ever been out of order or otherwise in question. Say what you want about his ceiling as a player but how is him having confidence in himself a bad thing, especially if he's trying to get better?
  13. Always been Bears #1, I was disinterested in baseball in the second half of the '90s and since I was overseas a lot I was only a casual Sox fan until about late '04, beginning of '05 when I started getting back into it. Honestly in about April or May '05 I could not tell you the entire Sox regular lineup or recognize some of their faces outside of Konerko, Crede, maybe Buehrle and Garland, and I knew who Dye was before he came here. I wasn't a fairweather fan, I just didn't have time. Sox are a close 2nd though. The way the Bears tested my loyalty was different from the way MLB and the Sox tested me.

I was watching these women on either the Today show or MSNBC (I forget which one) and yeah it was just weird. They were pretty much denying that anything wrong happened. When the reporter flat-out asked if the kids had been physically or sexually abused of course she said no. Then she asked what it was like to have girls 16 years old marrying someone 30, 40, 50 years old and the woman hesitated, finally she was like "that's not true" but she was stuttering a little bit and took like 10 seconds to say it. Creepy.
  15. QUOTE (RME JICO @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) Two class acts. Interesting that they both also suffered injuries that essentially stopped them from completely destroying the record books. What could've been....... Yeah I wrote a blog about something like that a year or so ago. Griffey probably would've easily gone down as the best all-around player of all time had he not had that string of freakish injuries. And Frank is... well, Frank. Had a series of completely insane seasons.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 07:39 PM) Yeah, that may indeed be the issue here....solid MI prospects are difficult to come by right now... Seems like that, which is why I'm holding out on Richar for the time being.

If you've already given up on Danny Richar, then I don't think the Sox could trade for any 2B prospect that would impress you, or any 2B short of Brian Roberts for that matter.
  18. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 08:25 PM) a gated community in Tinley Park i guess. I was close.
  19. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) That's really my point. "Clean Campaign 08" is really aimed more at negative personal attacks. For example: a Dem ad pointing to McCain's age or a Rep. ad saying Obama is unpatriotic or Muslim. If it's policy based, like abortion or Iraq, hey man, as long as it comes form the campaigns and not 527s, it's fair game to me. Yeah I think people confuse attacking policy and political beliefs with negative campaigning. All that stuff is fair game. Or, if you got caught manipulating your stance on an issue to get votes.
  20. Medicare is expensive as hell though. It wouldn't be so bad if something was done about the rising costs. That was one of the unintended consequences of Medicare (I'm not an economist, so I forgot how exactly that happened).
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 06:39 PM) Have you noted the controversy over McCain's acceptance and then departure from the public financing system over the primaries? And trying to nail Obama for something? Yeah. That's not what I mean though, that's just run of the mill political BS. I'm talking about Hillary-style scorched earth take-no-prisoners tactics. I don't see that coming out of him.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 06:41 PM) I absolutely understand the notion that Fields comes at a far cheaper price than Crede, in terms of salary. However, simply because Fields is a player that would be making near the league minimum for a few seasons prior to his arbitration years, and Crede would most-likely be an 8-figure salaried player, that does not mean Fields cannot be traded for a similar player at another position. It seems foolish to me that because we have two solid options at one position, we are somehow locked into letting the more expensive player walk or trading him for quarters on the dollar. Why not explore scenarios whereby Fields could be traded for a similar player at a position of need, for instance second base, first base, perhaps right field, rather than assuming he has to become unblocked at third base with the trade or non-signing of Joe Crede? They're not going to trade another propsect for another middle IF prospect, they already gave one up for Richar who they haven't really even done anything with yet besides let him get some raw ABs. And this team is loaded with OFs atm so there is no need to. First base... maybe. But if it really came down to that, teaching Fields to play 1B would be much easier and less risky than trading him for one. If you're talking pitching that is a whole other story.
  23. QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 06:41 PM) It probably has something to do with the fact that Joe can play All Star-caliber defense at 3B, while Paulie's limited to 1B and DH. The fact that Crede was downright phenomenal both offensively and defensively down the stretch in '05 is likely a contributing factor as well. I'm not expecting KW to keep Crede around, and would be fine with Fields as our future 3B. But comparing Paulie to Joe is almost comparing apples and oranges. Well, if you're talking playoffs, that's apples to apples, and it's at best a wash because if one guy had to be chosen, Konerko was the absolute hero of the playoffs. FWIW.
