  1. QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 10:09 PM) well, he's been catching in the bigs for almost 20 years now... His bat has slowed down, and his legs are probably not feeling all that great these days. Hence me saying "these days"
  2. This is the whole quote: "I think it's simplistic and naive to say people can spend their money better than the government. And the reason is, the reason we have government is to build community assets. And I don't care how rich you are, you can't build a freeway system by yourself, and that's why we have taxes. And I don't care how rich you are, you can't build a public education system by yourself. You can get you own child educated, but in this state we have something called universal education for all children. And so I think the notion that everybody can individually spend their money better than government I just think is trite, wrongheaded and anti-democratic." http://www.looktruenorth.com/limited-gover...-sure-but-.html
  3. QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 09:52 PM) I was hoping someone wasn't trying to compare arguably the best catcher of all time to Juan Uribe. lol, making an offhand statement that Ivan Rodriguez doesn't walk is comparing him to Juan Uribe... nice. Where could you possibly draw a conclusion like that?
  4. QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 09:38 PM) yell, Rodriguez makes up for his low walk rate/OBP by being one of the best defensive catchers in the league, and still be a good hitter. Unlike Uribe, Rodriguez is able to actually hit as evident by his usally decent avg. I'm not saying Rodriguez is a s***ty player by any means, but he has a really horrible OBP for a player of his caliber.
  5. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 06:44 PM) If what was meant instead of 'making remarks' was that some were offended, then we really should be asking ourselves what kind of pussies parents are raising that they are offended by a cross in an art project. lol, that was my first thought. Who the f*** would be offended by the kid next to them drawing a cross in school? My first thought was "oh, a kid drew a burning cross, that's pretty inappropriate" because that's what it kind of looks like, but they're not even saying that.
  6. QUOTE(southsidehawkeye @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) Now, I didnt look up each players career averages, but it wouldn't surprise me if not a single one reached them. Also, once Iguchi left we didnt really have a good #2 hitter, and we lacked a lead off hitter (owens did a better job in the second half, but still not stellar). We also dropped Erstad, Pods, Mack, Terrerro, etc... none of whom did much of anything to deserve even being on a major league roster last year. Now look at what we have this year. Mack was not a problem offensively in 2007, or ever. In fact, if we weren't completely loaded with outfielders, I'd be missing him a lot right now.
  7. If you guys think Uribe and Crede don't walk enough you should see Ivan Rodriguez these days. He walked a whopping 9 times last year and the difference in his average and OBP was 13 points. That's hilarious to me for some reason. It's not like he strikes out a ton like Thome or something either, it's just like he refuses to walk.
  8. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 06:58 PM) I think the "Shingo + iguchi hurt us" point he was trying to make was that both players did not stay on the Sox, which somehow factored into Fukodome's decision to go to the Cubs. And I dont agree with that. It isnt as if the Sox treated either player badly and didnt give both players a chance to play and succeed No... Fukudome said he wanted to be the first Japanese player on a team, and obviously that couldn't be the Sox since we had 2 already.
  9. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 04:20 PM) Javy had good stuff, he just didn't have his command and that was due to the cold. If Javy is healthy I wouldn't be shocked to see him win 20 games. Yep, I made that prediction and I'm sticking to it. He has a great arm, good command, and has really improved his mechanics/presence with runners on base (where he used to really struggle). I really believe the 3/4/5 will be the x-factors this year just as Contreras/Garland/El Duque were the X-Factors of 05. Personally I'm not worried about Javy at all. His pitches had some zip on them and he was striking guys out, but he couldn't impose his will on the hitters like he usually does. That deficiency is not something that will carry over to his next start, especially in better weather.
  10. QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 05:35 PM) He will never make the HOF. Hes an older player, gonna need to string together a lot of strong years to even be considered. Who cares we didn't get him, they overpaid for his contract, I'd rather have a younger guy in Alexei personally. They didn't overpay at all... if he ends up performing anything like he's been expected to perform, that's about what you'd pay a veteran MLB player with similar stats.
  11. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) So that you will vote for him? Most of the people that give an credence to those questions, have already formed their answers, and it will not make a difference what he says. $$$
  12. Questions like #4 and #12 really get on my nerves. Why ask? What in the hell do you think black values are? What, some kind of radical, racist separatist rhetoric? Hey how bout somebody ask me why we used to sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" after the national anthem in high school? Actually I think the author does think that which is why he'd ask a question like #10.
  13. QUOTE(almagest @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:32 PM) Which is why making him the starting 2B is baffling, because his greatest defensive asset (arm) is worthless there. I was thinking earlier today, is Cabrera really that much of an upgrade over Uribe at SS? Obviously offensively, yes he is a MAJOR upgrade, it's like going from a s***ty Neon to a Mercedes. But defensively they seem about equal to me. Yes Cabrera is a GG caliber defender but if Uribe had any kind of offensive numbers at all, he'd at least have been a candidate the last few years. Clearly and obviously Cabrera should be starting over Uribe at SS, but if they're both in the lineup I don't see why Uribe would be automatically at 2B. I guess because Uribe sucks and he isn't a fixture in the lineup the way Cabrera is and should be. Where oh where are you, Danny Richar?
  14. For some reason, I get the impression Dye really likes playing in Chicago. Although he never smiles, ever. I think he smiled when he got the WS MVP but only because he kind of had to.
  15. Danks' stamina started looking really low in the second half of last year too, it was pretty evident that he'd never thrown that many innings in his life. But he's still what, 22?
  16. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) I was saying the same thing to Zoom today... And me, a couple hours ago in this thread
  17. QUOTE(almagest @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) Agreed. He just happened to run into a pitch at an opportune time. He'll do that about 20 more times this year, while still only posting a low-mid 600s OPS. I will still give Uribe credit for being a fantastic defender, and arguably among the best at his position. Still, the fact that he hits HRs only makes him almost completely worthless offensively instead of completely worthless offensively.
  18. I'm amazed that Danks doesn't hate this team based on the way they sabotaged the otherwise respectable start to his career both offensively and defensively in every way possible.
  19. I don't completely disagree with you, but Dye still has a ton of value as an offensive player when he's healthy, and Quentin has proved absolutely nothing.
  20. Juan Uribe was half of our offense today, but he is still a really awful hitter with no plate discipline or contact ability whatsoever. Get excited about his occasional power streaks if you want but more often than not you can just add 1 out and skip him entirely to save time.
  21. QUOTE(scenario @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) What??? I'd like to see Quentin and Brian actually prove they can hit major league pitching before taking a gimmee 30 homeruns and 90 RBIs out of the lineup. Basically. Saying Dye should be in LF is one thing, saying we should take a .800-.900 OPS player out of the middle of our lineup is quite another.
  22. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) stop interjecting truth and common sense into this thread, seriously nobody wants to read that crap! Haha. my bad. WHY THE HELL DO WE HAVE DYE PLAYING WHEN WE HAVE 2 ALL-STARS ON THE BENCH
  23. QUOTE(almagest @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Stone said Danks looked tired, and was starting to leave the ball up. It was a good idea to get him outta there. Ah, the benefits of actually being able to see the game.
  24. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) Sounds about right. I still don't understand why Dye is still on this team, or why we gave him that extension. An OF of Swisher-BA-Quentin would be much better, both offensively and defensively. I guess that would depend on what your plans would be if Anderson hits .235 for the first half of the season and Quentin gets hurt again and/or stays hitting around his career average. I mean, yeah, ideally it'd be nice to see both of those guys performing to their full potential but what about when you don't have access to a crystal ball?
  25. Danks only threw 87 pitches when he left the game, had he hypothetically gotten the one out he was pulled for, he probably could've cruised thru another inning.
