    *Official* Work Out Thread

I hurt my right shoulder working out (I use mostly machines, but do curls with a bar). I switched to lighter weights for a week or two, but then couldn't even play catch over the weekend. Not asking for medical advice, just opinions based on experience: How long should I completely rest it before easing back in to workouts or (God forbid) having it checked? I am planning on giving it at least a full week while dosing with Aleve.

    2014 Films Thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) Wolf of Wall Street was great at parts, but it felt like watching Family Guy at others. You know where they would take about 5 minutes of film to do something that should have been done in 30 seconds? That drove me nuts. The movie was about an hour too long. I liked it a lot. Leo's narration and direct addresses to the audience reminded me a lot of Goodfellas, with Scorcese swapping out financial crooks for mobsters and sex for the violence.

Sox vs Twins April 3 game thread

QUOTE (jhonnydanks @ Apr 3, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I'd say a delayed start time by an hour with a window to play in the 2-5 range. Wishful thinking as I'd like to take full advantage of the open bar. Just looked, and that's exactly what it says on weather.com (about the 2pm window; nothing about drinking your face off).

I actually liked it, but I haven't watched the show for a couple years, so I wasn't on board for Robin and Barney. I can see how people who were thought it was cheap, in a Dallas-like "that season didn't happen/matter" way.

    College Athlete Unions

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) Eh, I think this gets overturned. The NLRB guy makes a distinction between student athletes and regular students because of various restraints put on athletes to keep their scholarship. Well, that applies to regular students with scholarships as well. Hell, anyone receiving financial aid from the school could be considered an employee if scholarships are now considered payment for services (though this guy distinguishes scholarships from financial aid and talks about a case that held financial aid is not payment). He also points out how a winning football program makes more money and notoriety for the university, but Northwestern is a pretty awful example of that, since it's been a highly regarded (and popular) school for decades despite really s***ty sports programs. Also, LOL at these guys not being compensated fairly. $61k in scholarships a year plus $1,200 to $1,600 a month in stipends. That's $300k + to play football and get an awesome education. Not on appeal to the full NLRB Board, that's for damn sure. Not with the composition of this Board; no way in hell. And there is no direct appeal mechanism in representation cases to the courts. NW has to run the administrative appeal process through to conclusion and when the decision is upheld by the Obama-stacked Board, wait for an election to be directed and conducted. If the Union wins the vote, NW's options would be to contest the election (alleging unfair labor practice shenanigans) or refuse to bargain with the victorious union, which would be an ulp in itself. Then the school can raise the ultimate issue in the context of an ULP case, which allows recourse to the federal courts. Depending on the panel, I think the largely conservative, 7th Circuit judges would be very sympathetic to NW.

    2014-2015 NFL Football thread

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 12:34 PM) Love this signing. I know Allen is past his prime, but I think he has some good football ahead of him. Several of you have pointed this out, but I agree that in a deeper rotation than the Vikings had, Allen will produce pretty well. I really like the depth we're adding on the DL. Also, it doesn't take away from the need at the 3-tech, so Donald/Jernigan are still very much in the mix. But it does improve the total DL depth to a point that I don't think they need to feel forced into taking a DT in Round 1. Hopefully we truly go Best Player Available (except QB or RB). Best defensive player available. Still have to.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 18, 2014 -> 10:56 PM) What are your thoughts on Pat Sims? I hear PFF likes him. I looked him up after reading this post (never heard of Sims before). He had 0 sacks through 13 games last year and ended up with just 2, in a contract season. That's certainly not too impressive, though the Bears still need cheap, veteran help at DT for depth.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 13, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) Still a good deal of money to sign Melton. Give me Melton and then draft Jernigan in the first. That should be REALLY solid against the run. With Ratliff resigned, if we keep Melton and can add another decent warm body for depth at DT, we can then afford to take the best defensive player available, which could be a DB and maybe one of the top two safeties.
