  1. Horrible signing and very disappointed by this.
  2. I guess I strongly disagree with that, but it’s not something either of us can really quantify (sorry Q score) so to each their own.
  3. But it’s not just rumors though. We know the Cubs have budget issues and can’t afford Harper (I am 100% certain of this). We know the Dodgers don’t like giving out big contracts and have publically shared a plan to keep their payroll below the luxury tax. We know the Yankees have said they’re out and from a roster standpoint that makes perfect sense. We know the Nationals have said they’re out and have already spent the money that could have been used towards Bryce. The Phillies remain the wild card IMO, because we know they said they were prepared for some dumb spending, but haven’t really done much to live up to that billing. It does sound like they haven’t met with Harper (which may be a rumor), adding even fuel to support the theory they prefer Machado. I guess what I’m saying is the market is actually shaking out for us to win this thing just like it did when we got Jose Abreu. The key is the money has to be there and that requires the biggest leap of faith if you’re trying to be objective. I truly believe that things are different now and with Jerry’s increasing age he will be willing to make the financial commitment necessary to pull this off, but I can understand posters having their doubts on that part.
  4. If you don’t believe there is a financial benefit to the intangibles he brings, then it’s far less likely he’s worth the money. That being said, just two years ago he was on pace for a 6.5 fWAR season. I’d happily pay $40M/year for a 26 year that can provide that type of production, but obviously that emails to be seen.
  5. I think the optimism on this board is way too low, but then again I think Jerry is prepared to offer a record setting contract.
  6. Other than Nola & Hoskins, they haven’t developed much. They just have more of their young guys already on the roster, whereas we have a signicant amount of reinforcements coming. I’d agree they are ahead of us, but not substantially.
  7. Other than the hundreds of millions of dollars, how is this any different than any other employment opportunity? We all have the right to pick the role, company, & location we desire. I really can’t relate with your view on this.
  8. I think by now it should be pretty clear that I’m trying to end all the Cubs talk and not generate it. Unfortunately, people here believe a god damn cat over a respected sports journalist.
  9. I agree with bmags, I’m not sure enough of the young relievers showed enough to be handed spots next year. I have no problem of adding one more high-end guy. For example, Ottavino, Colome, Jones, & Fry could make up a pretty nice back-end of a bullpen. That let’s you ease Hamilton & Frare (or Bummer) into high leverage situations. If those young guys prove they’re capable of taking on more important roles, you suddenly have some veteran relievers to trade. If not, the next set of young arms get an opportunity. To me, that’s the best way for us to develop a bullpen.
  10. I think we can finally put the threat of the Cubs to rest. Mooney had a nice little write-up on the Cubs yesterday and this quote stands out:
  11. If he’s a free agent in 2021, then you’d only get two years of control out of him. And quite frankly, he’s going to cost way too much prospect currency to make sense for us.
  12. Yeah, it seems like Realmuto & Kluber are really holding things up. To your point, the bullpen market should now start moving though.
  13. Seems like things were starting to pick up right when the meeting were ending. Dombrowski said he’s heard of a few things that he expects to happen in the next couple days. I wouldn’t be shocked if today is pretty quiet after the Vegas grind, but by tomorrow things should heat up again.
  14. Yup, Chatwood’s $13M salary won’t be enough to allow them to add Harper. And I really can’t see them trading Happ to save $26M anyways.
  15. And based on rumors, he doesn’t even have a huge market. I think the Sox & Phillies would both prefer to play him at 3B. The Yankees could probaly go either way depending on when Didi returns. At pthis point, Machado demanding he play SS could cost him money if it scares off even one team. I really don’t think he has the leverage to make a demand like that.
  16. I don’t think we know for sure that he’s dead-set on playing. I know I personally think that was to increase his market and he’ll go wherever the money is now, but that’s just my speculation.
  17. Lol...I convinced myself that Ottavino is the real deal after reading that Fangraphs about what he did last offseason and now want him. But Hahn specifically mentioned Colome in his comments, saying they valued the flexibility he provides by only being guaranteed one year but potentially having two years of control.
  18. Hahn made some comments recently that suggested it was a year too early to add a reliever that will require a long-term deal. I guess we’ll see if there’s any truth to that, but I’m starting to think Ottavino isn’t a real possibility.
  19. I would certainly offer him less if he was adamant on playing SS.
  20. We aren’t his team, so he has no obligation to sign with us to play a position he doesn’t want to play. That doesn’t make him selfish in the slightest. That’s like calling a guy who wants to close selfish for not signing with a team that wants him to be a setup man. Also, didn’t he play some 3B for the Dodgers down the stretch? This borderline hatred some people on the board have for Machado is simply bizarre IMO.
  21. Lopez wore down significantly as the season moved along? Did you even watch him last year? His best month was far & away September and his second best was August. He was a much improved pitcher down the stretch. He was also was 24 years old in his first major league season. To suggest he might ultimately be a bullpen guy based on his 2018 performance is quite frankly ridiculous.
  22. 100% agree. Our organization is completely irrelevant both nationally & locally. We need to do something to put us on the map and reinvigorate the fanbase. Investing in Harper not only improves our chances of winning, but gives us the star power this franchise has been lacking since an in his prime Frank Thomas. If that means we have to pay a premium above what his on-field production suggests then that’s the cost of doing business. Like you said Dick, a Harper addition will pay for itself.
