And that’s the problem.

Rosenthal: Could Harper be headed to the southside
Chicago White Sox replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I’m fine with Grandal on a multi-year deal regardless of what happens with the whales, but Brantley doesn’t make much sense for us IMo unless paired with Machado and even then I wouldn’t want to go three years. -

Something needs to happen, whether or not it’s Sox related. -

100% agree. And I find this whole leak game to be hilarious, because does someone like Friedman actually read this and go “hmmm, maybe my $300M offer is good enough to win!”. I mean, it doesn’t hurt to try, but I always wonder the effective of these leak wars. -

That fact it came from Nightengale tells me it was a Sox oriented leak intended to misdirect. That’s how we’ve been using him these past few years. -

One thing of interest during the MLBN coverage yesterday was an insider said that Phillies have indicated they don’t need to land a Harper or Machado, won’t wait around forever for them, and will not let their agents bully them into bidding against themselves. I’ll keep repeating, but neither agent will want to lose the Phillies (or Sox) from the bidding process, so there’s only so much of a long game Boras can actually play until it becomes counter-productive. Unless Harper is willing to forego large sums to avoid playing for us or the Phillies, I think Boras has to love with a sense of urgency and capitalize on the desperation of these two teams before one moves onto Machado or other things. -

Because of the Nightengale tweet? -

Yup, I really think a Harper signing could be happening soon if the Sox have hit Boras’ magic number. That’s probably not today, but I could see it before Christmas. -

100%. To me, that’s clearly a tweet intended to make other teams think we haven’t some crazy huge offers. -

Here’s an interesting quote from a James Fegan article tonight: -
If you're Rick Hahn and not just a fan...

My point is if you’re afraid to sign a 26 year old free agent because the long-term consequences, the same should apply to the 29 year old free agent down the road. -

I hope Reinsdorf is watching all these Ken Rosenthal interviews just daring him to sign Harper. -

So you’re concerned that giving a 10 year contract to a 26 year free agent will prevent us from paying market value for a 29 year old free agent seven years from now? -

Yup, we have the luxury to wait out the 2B market and potentially come away with a pretty interesting player on the cheap id we so desire. -

Lol...no worries. I’ve had my fair share of misses, so just want to make sure I get credit when I finally have a hit! -

This is not accurate as there was a small contingency of posters here (myself included) that wanted to add him. -

The problem is there is no guarantee either guy hits free agency and with Trout you know all the big spenders will be involved. -

You keep saying this, but let’s use the Cubs as example. What team has the payroll flexibility & willingness to take on Heyward or Darvish? The Cubs being able to free up enough money to land Harper is the longest of long-shots. Boras isn’t stupid, he isn’t going to wait for a miracle and risk teams with actual interest moving on to Machado or other things. -

If Bryce goes to the Cubs, just pack this shit & move to Portland because this franchise is dead. That being said, the Cubs are not a realistic possibility despite what the cat says. -
White sox expressed interest in Lance lynn

Agree. I’d be open to a two year deal at the right price, but that’s starting to seem unlikely. -

Sox seem to be gaining some real momentum with these “insiders”. I’m feeling more & more optimistic. -

If the Sox add Grandal, it reflects they don’t believe Collins is likely to stick there. Personally, I think this type of move makes a ton of sense if that’s the case.
