  1. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 25, 2016 -> 12:52 PM) I think the Nat's offer shows how badly Cespedes wanted to be back with the Mets. $35M left on the table. I partially agree with that but I also think he was expecting a deal around $150 mil and no team was coming close to that. If he has another great season in NY, he might be able to opt out and snatch a 5 yr/$125 mil deal somewhere which in the long run would give him his 6/150 asking price.
  2. Fowler would be ok but nothing longer than a 2yr contract. He had a very nice 2nd half last year but was pretty underwhelming in the 1st half.
  3. I think the benefit of getting Cespedes would be he'd have been the 3rd power bat in the lineup and would've made the Sox lineup tougher to pitch against. Right now they have 2 bats that other teams really have to worry about. However aside from Abreu and Frazier, no one in this lineup is giving opposing pitchers nightmares.
  4. I don't see the Sox signing Cespedes now. If they truly want to be all in then they should call the Rockies and try to grab CarGo. It will cost them a "real" prospect or two but he's on a 2 yr deal now so it'd fall in line with what they want to do. The hurdle is do the Sox want to give up a guy like Fulmer for him because that is going to be the cost.
  5. this will be interesting if it happens. Fowler had a pretty lousy first half for the Cubs last year but was then red hot the 2nd half of the year. He's a decent defender and does draw walks which is something the Sox need. Overall he'd be a nice addition, not great but nice. That being said I don't like a 3 year deal, would much prefer a 2 year deal or less.
  6. I think the word "Ace" gets thrown around too much these days. The Sox have one "Ace". Q is a very good pitcher but he's not an Ace. Rodon has a high ceiling and one day could be an Ace but he's not even close to there yet. As for Cespedes, starting to think he goes back to the Mets unless some team ponies up big.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 08:50 AM) I like that he grew up a Sox fan. He will have an enthusiasm others won't. Sounds good. It will be weird without Hawk. I just hope he isn't a Len Kasper clone. Funny you say that, I actually think Kasper is pretty good. He's a massive upgrade from what the Cubs had prior which was Chip Caray who was beyond annoying and really isn't any good. From the Trib article it sounds like Kasper even vouched for Benetti.
  8. Just to play Devil's Advocate, if the price for Cespedes/Upton eventually does come down in the 2-3 yr range then there will be teams that aren't interested now jump in the mix.
  9. If they're not going more than 3 years then they're not getting Cespedes. I believe Nightengale's report and while some fans may be po'd at the Sox stance, I get it. Cespedes is good but he's not Bryce Harper. At this point it might be worth Colorado and seeing what it will take to get CarGo.
  10. If the Sox don't get Cespedes then I wouldn't bother signing any of the 2nd tier guys to long term deals. Don't really think any of them are worth it. I'd rather see RH explore the trade market. Also as mentioned before Upton is from Norfolk and seems to have interest in playing in either Baltimore or Washington so that's where I think he might end up.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 08:51 AM) That opt out better be after 2-3 years to be enticing... We were talking Cespedes getting $125-150 million before the World Series...partly because of the lack of a draft pick loss attached. There's no way he's under $100. Agree
  12. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 31, 2015 -> 11:59 AM) I just can't see SF being a player for Cespedes considering that they've already spent $220 million this offseason alone on Cueto and Samardzija. If they get an outfielder I think it'll be someone in the Parra/Span/Fowler/Jackson group. they had almost $50 mil come off the books this offseason and really need another OF bat. Plus their payroll last year was $170mil. They're never really mentioned in the same breath as the LAD, NYY or BOS but they do spend and have the cash to do so. They also have another $40 mil coming off the books next offseason.
  13. Another thing to remember is Cespedes is coming off a 4 yr $36 mil deal which was a pretty good bargain for him. He wants to get paid big time and hired Jay Z's firm to represent him. Any idea of the Sox getting him on a discount probably isn't realistic. If they want him, they're going to have to spend like the big boys.
  14. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 31, 2015 -> 11:55 AM) Yes, SF is the team that worries me. Indeed. They have money and have had a good chunk of money come off the books too. Plus Cespedes is familiar with the Bay Area from his time in Oakland.
  15. I think the Cardinals are a dark horse for Gordon and I think SF is a dark horse for Cespedes.
  16. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 31, 2015 -> 11:48 AM) I hope that if he's the first one to sign it's with the Sox because if not, this board will go crazy & so will I. lol I agree. As I said I believe once he signs the real market develops for Cespedes and honestly I don't think the Sox can outbid some of the other teams in on him. Cespedes is more an ideal fit for the Sox but Gordon might be more attainable IMO.
  17. I think the Gordon signing comes first (where ever he does sign). After that I expect the market to shift more to Cespedes and Upton. Also reading between the lines I think Gordon might be the most realistic option for the Sox. If he signs with KC or someone else, I don't like the Sox' odds of getting the other two when you have to compete with teams like Detroit, SF, LAA, STL, etc. Teams that have been known to spend the big money. Gordon might not be as flashy as the other two but he gives the Sox a good LH bat, elite defense and a guy (finally) who will take walks.
  18. Heyman seems to think the Sox are the faves to land Gordon. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-he...-more-mlb-notes
  19. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 10:17 PM) Again, why do they have to be all in? The team is better. They dont have a two year window, it became longer. They upgraded the team while creating a bridge to the players you mentioned are ready. These moves created a now without hurting the future. I don't see where any of these moves shorten any window. FWIW I still think as of now the Royals are the team to beat in the ALC. They were completely dominant last year and that was without Gordon, Zobrist and Cueto for most of the year. I also anticipate them to make some moves before the offseason is done.
  20. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 05:20 PM) Exactly. When was the last time we had a guy like Gordon on the team who does absolutely everything very well? Ever? People seem too happy to ignore the fact that in 2 of Cespedes' 4 seasons, his OBP has been of the Flowers/Viciedo/Avi/Alexei variety. We've seen these can't make a lot of contact/can't take a walk guys on the Sox too often. He's high risk/high reward with almost certainly some infuriating seasons in what will be at least an expensive 6 year commitment. If we get Cespedes it'll be a big upgrade. Fingers crossed we see the good version of him in the next 2 while we have Frazier. That's a good point. Cespedes is the more dynamic player of the two but he's also another free swinger on a free swinging team that doesn't work the count and take walks. Gordon while not the power bat Cespedes is, draws walks and plays elite defense. I think the Sox prefer Cespedes but Gordon is probably more in their ballpark money and years wise.
  21. Based on Nightengale's last tweet, I believe that the Sox definitely want to sign one of the three but at their price. I think RH is probably pretty smart about not wanting to overpay on any of these guys in money or years. Cespedes is still IMO the best fit for the Sox in the short and long term. Also fills the need of a big bat which would give the Sox a very nice 3-4-5 in the order.
  22. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 30, 2015 -> 12:58 PM) Washington is still a possibility but they did get Murphy. Murphy is not an OF.
  23. Save their money for the 2018 UFA class which will be loaded with talent.
  24. So basically we know who their target is but money is still an issue. Seems someone has to go for the Sox to sign Gordon.
