  1. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jun 10, 2015 -> 09:11 AM) I went to the same high school as Stadler and have a brother who's a student there and a brother who's a teacher and football coach there. Just texted them to ask about Stadler, and here's what they say: "No. Too mentally weak. Just got beat up in his last high school start too." "He is 6'8" and has a straight fastball that reaches about 88. He is soft with no offspeed pitches. One of the best players on North just scoffed at that text because Fitz isn't very good." I haven't seen him pitch so I don't know, but what do you see in him? Wow, that's a pretty deep scouting report, thanks for all the inside info. Honestly I see his size and always think of projectability, add in the fact that he's a local kid I would imagine the Sox scouting staff could get a really good look at him as well. His commitment to ASU also suggested that the potential is there but it sounds like he needs to go to college to get more mentally mature and work on his stuff.
  2. The Sox will definitely be drafting a high-upside prep player today, the question is who will it be? Edit: My choice is Fitz Stadler, 6'8" local kid with a lot of potential as a starter.
  3. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 09:35 PM) Has a career line of .293/.372/.466 in 1500 minor league player appearances but hasn't been given a chance yet. He has to be awful defensively because I see no reason to keep him in the minors in favor of Flowers. I think they've been taking it slow with him since he was still relatively new to baseball when they drafted him out of Pitt, he was recruited as a QB but only concentrated on baseball full time his last season or two there. I'm sure they want him to be comfortable with managing the game and making decisions become instinctual before calling him up.
  4. Congrats to Montas on the no-hitter! I'm actually encouraged by the fact that he was able to toss the no-hitter despite only fanning 3, it suggests that he's learning how to actually pitch rather than just overpower hitters with his stuff. On a side note, it was a match-up of potential future aces down in Kanny with Spencer Adams squaring off against Tyler Kolek. Looks like Adams was able to outduel Kolek for the first 4 innings before Kolek was yanked and Adams was subsequently dinged up for 3 runs in the fifth. Hopefully this will be the first of many tilts between the two as they rise through the minors.
  5. #232 - Casey Schroeder - C - Coastal Carolina Switch-hitter, Callis and Mayo were just raving about his athleticism. Can't have enough catching in the system. A couple of prep players that could be interesting names after the 10th: Fitz Stadler, Glenbrook South kid committed to Arizona St. so signability is an issue, John Aiello, switch-hitting SS/3B that had TJS last season seems similar to Trey Michalczewski, & Chris Andritsos, 6'4" righty that has seen his velocity dip this spring but has the projectability and apparently a great mental make-up, also a signability issue.
  6. I really like the Hickman pick, he sounds like a really good kid with a great head on his shoulders. I think the Sox can help develop him as a pitcher, he definitely has a major league starter's frame.
  7. I don't mind what Hahn & co. are doing right now if they are in fact saving $$$ for a bigger splash past round 10, I'm also kind of surprised Blake Hickman has lasted this long. New to pitching having made the transition from catcher, also he's from the southwest side of Chicago if I'm not mistaken. Raw with a big frame plays to our system's strengths.
  8. I'm surprised Demi Orimoloye is still on the board, really big kid that is still raw but has the physical tools to become a monster. Might be an interesting pick but I'm not sure if we can afford him.
  9. Good to see Cose back in the saddle and picking up where he left off before the back injury. It sounded career-threatening so I'm glad that he even made it back, let alone being effective.
  10. I can't recall a draft prospect rising faster than Jay has the past couple of weeks, he's gone from a late first round pick in most mock drafts to the #1 overall pick? I'm more than a little wary of that type of hype.
  11. Carlos Rodon - SP Frankie Montas - RP (elite closer) Tyler Danish - SP Spencer Adams - SP Chris Beck - Initially a SP but quickly moves to the bullpen Jordan Guerrero - RP (potential as a filthy late-inning guy) Jace Fry - SP Myles Jaye - AAAA Luis Martinez - too early to tell, needs a lot more development Nolan Sanburn - RP David Trexler - RP Andre Wheeler - RP James Dykstra - AAAA Andrew Mitchell - RP Thad Lowry - SP Brian Clark - RP Yency Almonte - too early to tell, needs more development Aaron Bummer - who???
  12. Jason Coats leading off for Charlotte, 2-4 with no Ks and he even had a steal. Really impressed with how well he's been able to adjust to each promotion.
  13. Great write-up, they seem like a great group of guys and really relatable. Thanks for posting!
  14. Great stats and analysis on Danish! I'm really excited about him going forward, not only do I think his stuff and delivery can hold up as a starter but his bulldog mentality will keep him in the rotation. He reminds me a lot of Peavy with the unorthodox delivery, above-average stuff and great mental toughness. Alvarez 3-3 with a 2B & 3B and 2 RBIs, looks like he doesn't have much left to prove at Kanny. If/when he gets promoted to W-S, they'll have some major speed in that line-up with Engel, Walker and Alvarez. It would be fun to catch a game or two to see all the havoc on the basepaths.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:06 PM) I don't recall the TJ guys signing for that big of a discount last year, may not be remembering correctly though. I was using the hypothetical numbers in the post that I quoted for the discount, I know that it is highly unlikely that either of Aiken or Matuella are willing to sign for such a steep discount but stranger things have happened.
  16. If Aiken or Matuella were willing to sign for that big of a discount it would be tempting to pull the trigger, close to $1 million to spend on prep prospects past round 10 could be huge. However, I think the injury history for both of them is too concerning so I'd stay away. If they are willing to sign for that far underslot though, Hahn could use it as leverage to negotiate with other available players. Personally, I'd like to see them take a more advanced college bat like Swanson or Happ, it's been pointed out several times that we have a distinct dearth of position prospects in the system outside of Anderson, Hawkins and Trey and it would be nice to have premiere bat coming up.
  17. I feel bad for Saladino, he's got the skills to make it to the show but I'm not sure if he's durable enough. Seems like he goes on the DL every year, probably suggests that his ceiling is as a utility guy which is realistic but I was holding out hope that he could develop into a super-utility player like Sean Rodriguez for TB.
  18. Looks like Trey Michalczewski left today's game after one at-bat, hope it's not a serious injury.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 21, 2015 -> 09:56 AM) If Mitchell keeps doing THIS badly, in say May or June, I'd say it's time to cut ties. Jason Coats is doing well in AA, and would be more age-appropriate in AAA anyway, so send him up. Hawkins and May aren't ready. Josh Richmond should be healthy around that time too so he's also a possibility to replace Mitchell in Charlotte. I'd like to see Coats called up too, very polished hitter and a very shrewd draft pick by Hahn in 2012 getting him in the 29th round coming off an injury.
  20. Great to see Erik Johnson back to his old self so far, Carlos Sanchez is raking right now. Going to be a really interesting situation with the infield over the next couple of seasons. Also nice to see Kevan Smith starting to adjust to the league, everything has been singles so far but at least he isn't overmatched. Brett Austin looks like he doesn't have anything more to prove at Kanny, should be a quick call-up to W.S. unless they like how he catches the young guys.
  21. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Apr 17, 2015 -> 02:27 PM) No Well...
  22. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 17, 2015 -> 05:48 AM) They won't have the money to do this unless they go way under slot in round 1. I'm not an expert with the draft allocations but with the rash of injuries to the top of the draft it's feasible that the Sox could draft one of the injured prospects for a modest discount of $500k or so and use that to throw at a higher ceiling prep position player in the later rounds. I'm sure it's not likely but there are scenarios where it could happen.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 16, 2015 -> 06:23 PM) There is no such thing as "too much pitching." Pitching is always tradeable. If we have 7 MLB ready starters and we need to restock the lineup, either there's money available or that trade writes itself. If everyone else stays healthy and Rodon is in the rotation, then within a year or so we should be staring multiple top level trade candidates that we could use to fill in whatever gap we have. That is fine. Very true and I hope they have this philosophy for the first 5-7 rounds, but I wouldn't mind seeing them drafting some high ceiling/big bonus high school position players outside of the first 10 rounds. Much like they did last year with Bryce Montes de Oca but with a position player instead.
  24. If only Danish was going today for BIR.
  25. The Kanny lineup is pretty difficult to follow, there's a distinct dearth of position prospects on the current roster outside of Eddy Alvarez, Brett Austin and Mason Robbins and even those guys are fringy at best. Hopefully Hahn & co. take this year's draft to focus on drafting more position players with upside.
