Yah, it is kind of wild. But also goes to show you that taking the ball every 5th day and going out there and just giving 180 IP of 5.0 FIP stuff throughout the year is still very valuable. Plus, when you're a guy like Reynaldo that flashes TOR stuff, the value is there. If the Sox were actively looking to move Reynaldo (they aren't), pretty much every club would be interested.

The ONLY reason to bet on Mazara is because there really aren't m(any) great options, he'll be financially cheap, most likely cheap to acquire and there still is some upside there. He's probably between like 8-10 on my somewhat realistic RF list, but I'd prefer they roll the dice on him as opposed to having Leury Garcia/other internal options be the everyday RF. And I like Leury, but it will be nice to have Leury be the supersub/2 week injury replacement he should be and not an everyday regular. If you could get Mazara in late February for say Fulmer + org fill in, if a bunch of other RF options didn't work out, I'd probably do it.

Sox three biggest needs for RF: - A good, or at worst, average defensive OF - An above average hitter -Ideally left handed Castellanos fits 1 of 3 needs.

Then sign someone on a 1 year deal and reassess next offseason. Forcing a bad fit just because he is the best of a bad crop of options isn't the wisest move.

There are scenarios where Castellanos makes some sense. But those scenarios involve multiple other signings - a few of which with FAs just as prominent or more prominent than Castellanos - for it to make any sense. It would also involve bringing in other RF on a 1 year deal that isn't awful in the field (this is where Calhoun make some sense). But I'll believe the Sox getting that aggressive when I see it. If Castellanos is the Sox premier offseason signing, it was a very poor offseason.

As stated in the other thread where you suggested a Lopez-Mazara trade: Reynaldo produced more fWAR in 2019 than Mazara has in his entire career. Plus, Lopez has 2 additional years of control compared to Mazara. These two are no where near similar in values. FWIW, Reynaldo was 14th in fWAR in the AL in 2019, and 19th in 2018 (for pitchers). Guys like Reynaldo have a fair deal of value - sure he is frustrating to watch as a fan because he's wildly inconsistent and seemingly has a lot of untapped potential. But to suggest Reynaldo has no value and is basically a change of scenery candidate is a really ill-informed take. The Rangers would accept that trade so fast before Hahn sobered up from his bender.

Any situation that involves overpaying for Castellanos should get a HARD PASS.

I struggle to see the point in giving up trade assets to acquire another right handed corner bat.

Lopez has plenty of value. 25 year old pitchers with above average stuff that already have two 185+ IP seasons under their belt don't grow on trees.

The Sox aren’t going to trade Cease. 98% chance they don’t trade Lopez either, but at least that one I could see as part of a much larger deal if that presented itself. Sox need both of those guys.

Graterol has never pitched more then 100 innings. He isn’t suddenly going to become a twins rotation mainstay in 2020. If the Twins get 120 IP from him next year in the bigs, that would be an enormous win. And we can all only hope Randy Dobnak is making regular starts for the Twins next season.

It will be interesting. Twins pitching needs quite a bit more work than the Sox. I imagine they’re really hoping Odorizzi takes that QO, and they probably bring Pineda back too.

I agree it won’t cripple the franchise. But why pay the guy 3/$45M when his market value is 1/$15M max and you already basically have 1/$17.8M in hand. I don’t mind Jose sticking around. We need above average bats and he is that. 2/$28-30M seems fair for both sides if he really wants to go beyond 1 year. I just feel like a deal similar to that has probably been on the table for some time.

Don’t blame him for asking. But clearly Sox aren’t agreeing. this could be the best case scenario, honestly.

3/$45 would be pretty bad. I cannot understand why the Sox would prefer that to 1/$17.8M. $3/35M or less, and you’re basically getting him for two extra seasons at $8.6M each as compared to him just taking the QO. I guess could see the value there, though would still prefer 2 years. All that being said Levine doesn’t know anything, and if the Sox were offering 3/$45M, the deal would have been signed months ago. They now have more leverage than ever, and they’re just now offering that? Doesn’t add up.

Guys, we know the Sox and Abreu have discussed a long term deal. This isn’t new information. Of course Abreu wants a multi year deal - therefore it has been discussed.

I like Calhoun if they decide to go with Castellanos. Then at least you can regularly DH Castellanos.

I reall don't think it is realistic to expect the Sox to sign more than 1 SP on a multi-year deal. We'll likely get one of Wheeler/Ryu/Madbum/Kuechel, and then a guy on a 1 year deal. Which is fine - we don't need two long term SP with Gio, Cease, Kopech, Lopez, Rodon, and even Dunning. We need 1 long term SP, plus someone to eat some early innings while Kopech gains his footing, and as injury insurance for later in the season.

Sure, but you still need to find somebody to play RF.

His career wRC+ is 112 though. And the Sox would have the worst OF defense in the league if he plays RF regularly. If Castellanos comes at 3/$45 or less, is signed along with Grandal, Wheeler/Ryu, and another OF that can play RF regularly putting him at DH, I could get behind it. But overpaying Castellanos with the expectation of him being our RF or DH for several seasons isn’t going to end well.

I would trade Lopez for Benintendi in a second. Benintendi May be a tad overrated, but he’s a well above average player that is solid at everything. He would be a fantastic fit in RF for the Sox. But the Red Sox aren’t going to trade him for Lopez.
