Do the Sox have a starting 2B, no. Is the offseason over, also no. 2B is much easier to fill IMO than the other needs. We'd all love a Semien or Nick Madrigal 2.0, but I'm not sweating 2B until the other, more pressing needs are filled.
-
Exactly. If you are concerned about defense, a Vaughn/Sheets RF should be unacceptable. A defense first 2B should not be too hard to come by or too expensive. Sox need a starting 2B but it is about third on my list of priorities behind a RF w/ pop and a quality starting pitcher.

Eloy in LF and Vaughn/Sheets in RF would be one of the worst OF defenses in the majors. They might give up as many runs as they produce. And banking on Engel playing regularly after last season seems unwise. Sox can and should do better in RF.

That foul was baffling and one of the most egregious phantom fouls I have ever seen. How the call stood after review is beyond comprehension.

Billy Donovan needs to look in the mirror. I’m no expert at Xs & Os, but I still don’t see any semblance of an offensive system being run. Ball & player movement get stagnant, picks but no rolls, bad dumb shots, overpassing leading to worse shots, and far too much reliance on isolation. The lack of size and reliable 3 point shooting is catching up as well. I get that we are only a month into the season, but I would hope we would start to see the offense click more but the past two games were atrocious.

A frontline starter like Robbie Ray would be very welcome. Can we get an actual mention of Sox interest *in* Ray there Bob? -

B, easily.

If I remember correctly they made a pitch to Harper at the Advocate Center early in FA, but I don't recall if they ever made a serious offer. And after Machado signed there was some word of a pivot to Harper but it always felt way too late.

This is where I am too. The announcement stung a little as I love Rodon, but I understand it too. I’m choosing to be rational until I see how things play out.
-
I’m not endorsing the training staff or the decision not offer the QO. They obviously know more than any of us do. I think Rodon is worth the risk but I’m not going to be upset by the decision. If they sign no starters or give out bad money I will be critical but I will reserve judgement until then.
-
While I think Rodon is worth the risk on a QO, I’m going to trust the FO in regards to their knowledge of his health. Hahn’s comments the other day really makes this no surprise. We all have to hope they have those dollars earmarked for a FA starter with a better track record of health.

What you want them to do/what you think they will do
Tnetennba replied to Kyyle23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wouldn’t call it a ‘poor spot’ but we are in uncharted territory for this franchise. If they act like a major market club and push the payroll to $200M+ to fill out the roster during this competitive window then they are in great shape. If they start dumping productive but expensive players or papering over the roster holes with cheap washed up stop gaps then they were always pretenders. We as fans just have to hope they finally aren’t messing around. -
I haven't seen enough of Vaughn to get a good read of his 1st base defense, but I can confidently say that Abreu is easily the best defender at 1st of the rest. I don't see the Sox cutting ties, but I do hope they work out something team friendly since I believe it is inevitable that he sticks around until he retires. I would like to see him bat lower though if he's going to continue to be a ground ball machine.

Nitengale: La Russa "definitely" returning to the Sox
Tnetennba replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Honestly, No player is really gonna say ‘it’s not my call.’ They are professionals and part of being a professional is saying the right thing, overly and untruthfully effusive as that might be. Players might genuinely like playing for the man but also know that they aren’t in the best position to win because of him. They aren’t gonna trash him if they already know he’s coming back. Players not overtly trashing their manager =|= him being the best thing since sliced bread. That’s not too hard to figure out. -
What to do with the abreu/vaughn/sheets/burger logjam in 2022?

Sheets was really bad in limited time in RF. I’ve seen enough to say he’s a DH only. -

Coaching put this team at a massive disadvantage and it showed out in the post season. If you think he did a good job, you are beyond help. I choose not to engage with you after your multiple attempts to troll me. Please just put me on ignore and move on. -

Hey look, a defender perfectly placed to make a play. Imagine that. But there's no leadership or coaching problems with this team... -

It all boils down to TLR not being the man to push them over the top. The season and now the post season proved that. -

Expecting him to actually listen to their input when it goes against his old school ways is wishful thinking.
