I like that he didn't go to defensive subs too early.
I agree but who would have even needed to be replaced? Eloy was DH so obviously not him, and everyone else in the lineup probably doesn't need a defensive replacement. Especially when the bench (which was only Zavala, Sheets, and Alberto at the time) is mediocre at best defensively

I tore both of mine about 6 years ago at the same time. Opinions varied, including among my surgeons, but usually it's thought that micro tears in the tendon from tendonitus are a contributing cause. I had "jumper's knee" in both my tendons for basically my entire life and I played three sports in HS, college in baseball and then an absolute shitload of tennis and basketball in my 20s before they ripped in my early 30s playing tennis coming to a jump stop at the net.
You put the wrong force on them and they will snap, especially if weakened. He has a long rehab ahead of him. I was lucky enough to get a great surgeon and I really took command of my own rehab but I had to give up basketball for life. Still play tennis pretty well.
The Yankee kid that made his debut tore his on the electrical box at the Cell. And there have been a couple full tears in the NFL as well. Guys have a really hard time coming back from it. It's worse than an ACL.
Are you able to at least shoot around and just not play actual games?

From what it sounds like, they don't have the technology for full automation.
Isn't that what AAA had last year?

It's just like tennis. This is already in the minors where this is deployed teams have 3 challenges per game, which you keep if you were right and lose if you were wrong. It works fine. It also would serve the ump to get real time feed back on how a pitchers pitch is hitting the zone so they can correct mid game.
It's not like tennis anymore, which has recently changed to a fully automated system (no more challenges), which has made the matches much smoother IMO
Personally, I hate this ball/strike challenge system. They have the technology for full automation and it's proven to be far more accurate than the current system, so why not just use it? Why do a weird mix of the two?

So Tim wants fans to be more positive, yet he flicks them off any chance he gets. You can't have it both ways
Those were Cleveland fans who were heckling him, and it was one time, not "any chance he gets"

This was always extremely implausible and thinly sourced so color me not shocked.
Grifol had said it would be happening (well before the fake insider tweet) so I’m wondering if TLR’s health issues just haven’t been getting any better

Still crazy to me how the Sox haven’t done a single thing the last month to provide depth if Hendriks is out for the year and/or Clevinger never pitches here. It’s sickening how little they care about contending. Based on how this offseason went, I wish they blew up the whole thing.
Especially since Hahn, at the Benintendi press conference, said they weren't a finished product. Since that quote, which is now a month old, they have acquired 0 MLB players

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Except:
-They picked up Johnny Cueto off the scrap heap and found their second best pitcher of the season. The only reason he was even available when he was signed was the lockout. Had Lance Lynn not gotten hurt, they never sign Cueto - who outperformed everyone other than Cease in their rotation. They had a replacement for Keuchel because of this.
-They picked up Elvis Andrus off the scrap heap and got 2 months of darn near MVP performance from him. He was a notable upgrade over Tim Anderson for those 2 months, they got better because Anderson got hurt. We will probably never see that kind of upgrade from a midseason veteran put on waivers again in our lifetimes.
-Seby Zavala, per innings played, was one of the most effective catchers in baseball. Effective offensively, avoided some of the defensive issues that plagued him in 2021. This combined with McGuire turned the White Sox'
-The guys they brought in off the scrap heap were so effective that it basically offset almost all of the losses to injury (except for the stupidity with Robert's wrist). Had they been the healthiest team in baseball, they're basically the same team in the end, because of how effective these guys were.
-They weren't all that banged up anyway compared to the rest of the league. For example, "the White Sox had 3 pitchers hit the IL" compared to "Detroit's entire opening day starting rotation was on the IL when we faced them for a 3 game series. Ponder what the White Sox's losing streak would look like if they lost all 5 starters for a month.
-Their competition was weaker than expected, particularly Detroit because of how banged up they were. 19 games against that banged up Detroit team. They outscored Detroit 100-59 on the season.
-They outperformed their run differential the whole season. Say what you want about ineffective management, this is generally a sign of luck that can't be easily repeated.
-Their bullpen performed extremely well in close games. Their record in 1 run games was top 5 in baseball, tied with Cleveland for that performance. This was notably better than their performance in the same type of games in 2021 and will be particularly difficult to repeat now that Hendriks is out for the year.Thank you. I always see the "everything went wrong last year and they still won 81 games" line, but I couldn't disagree with it more. Had Cueto and Andrus not shown up and played like it was 2011, last year's team probably wins more like 72 games.
Elvis Andrus was a 7.5 fWAR/162 player for the White Sox last year. Things like that don't happen in a year where "everything goes wrong," and the true worst case scenario for this team is accordingly much lower than 81 wins

The only guy in that second base depth that would have any trade value would be Rodriguez. Otherwise, it’s a bunch of dime a dozen AAAA guys
Sosa would absolutely have trade value, probably more than Rodriguez

Thanks. Regardless, given the lack of money and available players at this point, I don't see an actual move coming beyond MiLB deals/AAAA types. Hope I'm wrong

The good news is the Sox probably have to do something to try to take this off the front burner. The bad news is the guys that always create messes like this will be doing the something.
Not sure how they're going to do anything with no money left. Even if they eventually are able to get out of having to pay Clevinger, wouldn't the whole investigative process take months (at least)? Didn't Bauer's take nearly two years?

This has been obvious since June of 2021.
The core isn't good enough. All 2022 and 2023 are doing is wasting time and team control and delaying the inevitable.
Isn't June of 2021 when the team was 43-25 (the best record in baseball) and all the (healthy) core players were having good to great seasons?

There has been a lot of using fangraphs defensive WAR for catchers this offseason and being surprised what catchers it favors.
Id recommend at some point questioning whether to continue using that.
I think that's less of an issue of the stat itself and more people just not realizing that it's a positional adjustment that makes catchers look more valuable defensively/them not realizing that the "Def" stat next to WAR isn't dWAR. Sanchez ranked 18th out of 30 defensively among catchers with 600+ innings, which seems fair since he did make a few tangible improvements last year

7:40 mark of this video is when the question starts, 8:10 is when he says La Russa will be around at Spring Training. This video is a month and a half old so I'm assuming that's where the tweet came from

I am not at all surprised you choose to believe that, but there is no way TLR was coming back. They gave him a way to leave without getting fired, and he took it.
Now, I will admit - this little nugget of information definitely fits in the "he would be back if not for health" category, but he is a HOF manager afterall. I don't want him anywhere near to club - to be clear - but I could at least understand why they wouldn't tell him to f*** off, even if I would.
I think they would have let him back, but he would not have come back, given his comments in his final conference about how the fan pressure might have led him to leave regardless

Pretty sure Grifol revealed this in an interview last month

Tremendous article. One overlooked part:
QuoteIf describing pitching arsenals in analytical language doesn’t take, simulating them in high-speed reps off machines that reproduce velocity and spin, and eschewing low-speed flips and tosses compared to previous years, will have to do the rest.
I've been begging for them to get those machines for years. I really think they'll work wonders for guys like Robert when it comes to laying off high-spin sliders out of the zone

Yep, they literally had an entire right-handed lineup before getting Varsho and Kiermaier. Their OF defense has improved dramatically with the moves they've made.
A Varsho-Kiermaier-Springer outfielder is the best in baseball (defensively at least) without a doubt. 2 gold glove-level CFs and an above average (arguably well-above average depending on the metric) Springer

Yeah I’m not sure what the Jays are doing. First dumping OF for any value they could find, then moving into acquiring similar level OF with real prospects.
Are you saying Teoscar and Varsho are similar value players?

as they should be. for how much Sox fans want to complain about this off-season...theirs is absolutely comically bad.
What's so bad about it? Relatively inactive, sure, but Vazquez is a nice fit for them and Gallo has been very comparable to Benintendi (slightly better than Beni overall, but worse lately) on a holistic (WAR) basis throughout his career

The fact the Sox allowed him to play through that when he wasn't contributing at all & still under contract for next season is completely insane. Admirable that he was willing to do that, which is odd considering he's allegedly such a bad guy/teammate, but that's a situation where a player must be protected from themselves.
Unless I've missed something substantive, I've always thought this was just a narrative spread by people who don't like the way he plays. Nobody has ever said anything negative about him like they have with someone like Josh Donaldson. And speaking of which, the way Grandal stood up for Anderson during that weekend makes him seem like a good teammate if anything

The home run Lopez gave up came on a very good pitch. I know some were upset that he went to the slider but it was a good pitch nonetheless, just happened to be against a top 2 hitter in baseball
