    Voth v. Kopech

Voth in his (part of) 5th season. Made it to majors at age 26. He relies mostly (46%) on a fastball which he leaves up more than he should. This is reflected in just some bottom of the barrel xBA, xSLG, xWOBA stats. He can get some K's, but has walked guys at nearly 9% clip in his career. His other two pitches are a cutter and a curve. This year he's increased both of those while quitting his fastball. Believe it or not he was throwing that thing like 60% of the time before this. Basically? He's a reliever that's being forced into this role. His longest outing this year was his last at 2.2ip, so we're likely only going to see him for a few. There's not much here to like if you're an O's fan. It's almost like a video game on rookie setting, but righties are batting .396 against him this year resulting in a 13.09ERA ... that's not a typo. Now ... that's 11ip against righties, so small sample. Nevertheless if there was ever a time that Tony ran out an all righty lineup? This is it. Also, if there was ever a time to let Sosa get his first MLB hit and have an easy matchup .... this is it.

    Kopech i won't rehash.

If you drink a Modelo for every Sox run you may be hammered by the 5th tonight.

Go go sox. Let's start a streak and have some fun tonight. If we lose this, god forbid ... because on paper, this is about as good of a matchup youll get.

Starts with an S! Swim, Swami, Slippy, Slappy, Swimmon, Sammon, Simmon, Swans, Swenson? Swanson?

    samsonite. I WAS WAY OFF.

fuck this team. i am officially over being optimistic.

So it looks like no Eloy in sight for the foreseeable future as well.  Something is wrong with the Sox and injuries, is it training?  Is it coaching?  Is it selecting the wrong players?.  Is it lack of adjustments?  Lack of feedback and accountability? Or most likely a combination thereof?  Something needs to change.

If im correct, and this off top of head, i believe the 60 day IL move expires today. it was just a move to allow an opening on the roster for a day.

  4. I shit on it, and want to hate it, but i actually don't fully disagree with sitting Sosa tonight seeing as Harrison has been good of late and Sosa hasn't been above AA. I think that's Harrison's job again (unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you slice it) and that he has earned (very light interpretation) to have that be his job while he's playing well. All of that said I do hope to see Sosa get his chance and we obviously desperately need a spark. Right now Harrison is providing a spark, i just think as fans, and maybe even as a team, we need a few more sparks and the "new guy" is generally a good way to do so. ,

Hopefully we can take 3/4 from the Orioles despite our injuries and by next week this time we're having healthy lineups with fully productive Yaz, Yoan, and Eloy instead of getting upset about Sheets v. Haseley.

Next week I'd hope our lineup is:

    Anderson SS

    Vaughn DH

    Robert CF

    Abreu 1B

    Eloy DH

    Pollock LF

    Yaz C

    Yoan 3B

Whoever is swinging a hot bat (Sosa, Harrison ... puke Leury ...)

    Bench of Burger/Haseley/McGuire/ ____

God forbid for my mental health Abreu or Robert go to the IL ... that Yaz's back or legs continue to be sore and "day to day" or that Eloy doesn't progress. I'm losing my positive vibes by the hour with this team. i want to stay positive, just not much more I can take.

We've won what ... 6 of 9? and 6 of those were against playoff foes. and real ones. really really good teams. even with the shit lineup yesterday afternoon they fought back when TLR pulled everybody and said not too. We can keep this going. Let's grab today, and move on to tomorrow.

By the way for tonights game ... Kremer is looking damn good this year. His fastball has been very, very good (small sample size) but his changeup has been suspect and he's throwing more of them this year. Last year he was 14% barrel and terrible exit velocity and xERA, etc. This year, totally different. basically no barrels. Let's hope it's just the small sample size though. The fastball only went up from 92.6 to 93.6 ... so it's not something crazy. Just nobody hitting it thus far through 3 games. Let's hunt early. he's throwing that pitch over 50% of the time. early and often!

    Go go sox.

  5. Halesey definitely cannot play today.

Sheets must play today since he just flew in.

Sosa cannot play today since he just flew in.

Robert cannot play today since he's got tired legs.

Abreu can play today despite tired legs.

Moncada cannot play this week tired legs.

I'm starting to think that Tony is projecting his own old ailments upon these players. He wakes up with sore legs? Then Robert must be very sore. Vaughn played on astroturf? Well that's a lot of work for a 77 year old. Day off! Rest up!

  6. I thought i read somewhere that he was eligible to come back today ... and then that above blurb about maybe not doing a rehab stint (THANK GOD -- so tired of rehab starts ... let these guys play if they're healthy. that's a luxury ... this team is banged up. let them play)

Either way, I wouldn't be shocked to see Yaz activation be parlayed with Jose to the IL. Just my personal guess. He's looked awful gimpy over the past few games.

  7. I'm sure there were people like me staring to get negative after they blew that 2-0 lead ...

Focus on those positives! What a job by Anderson/Vaughn/Robert to keep it alive with 2 outs in the 9th. Harrison coming through twice in big situations and making this next roster move a real headache.

Going to take some guts today out of Gio. Even if he serves up 5 runs, you need 6ip with a tired bullpen and 5 games in a row ahead without an off day. You only have Banks, Kelly, Lambert ... and maybe Lopez today.

Also probably have Abreu sitting, so Vaughn at 1B and Burger at 3B? DH? Haseley? Going to have to be a gritty game. lets get that sweep! go go sox

  8. My take...

Jazz would be an absolute electric star with the White Sox and would be a great addition to this team. You're also probably buying at the absolute high so far, which is to say, is his ceiling/tools/profile there to be another level? Yes. I'd put him in the Tim Anderson grouping if he were to click on all cylinders.

Miami finally has a buzz and a star in the making and would be stupid to let him go. That team is so damn stubborn and is a managerial change and 2 trades away from being a World Series contender. Yes, World Series. Trading Jazz takes them away from that goal. Also there is nothing at all we can offer them for Jazz that lines up. They don't need pitching and our most tradeable pieces are not good enough to net Jazz or make the Marlins better short or long term.

  9. there have been many iterations of Gausman in his career. And many iterations of Harrison in his career. That said, in 11ab's Harrison is batting .273 against Gausman. Not too shabby. Given his uptick at the plate over the last 2-3 weeks, homer yesterday? Think you see him in the lineup. Vaughn also homered against him as did Haseley, so have a feeling you see both those guys in today too. Small smaples though...

    I'd go something like:

Anderson, Vaughn DH, Robert, Abreu, Haseley, Pollock, McGuire, Harrison 3b, Mendick.

sounds ugly, but gets Haseley an at bat and start ... and not that i care, but, a lefty ... again, not my exact lineup of choice, but my guess.

I'd like the 10th inning to start as normal then add the runner for the 11th.

I kind of like that idea as a compromise. I love the history of the game, but actually really enjoy the shorter extra innings. another compromise i thought might make sense is starting the runner on 1b instead of 2b. But then again, the idea is to artificially shorten the game with this rule, so whats really the difference between starting on 1st base or 2nd base if the crowd against is likely "baseball purists" and will dislike it either way.

Sorry, i didnt click the link - but the shift ends in 2022 right, or at least it's a modified shift? That could be huge for a guy like Yaz and his value.

  11. THIS WILL BE A FUN GAME for baseball nerds.

Gausman has served up only 2 homers. The adjusted wind is blowing 31% out for HR's tonight. Cease is in same boat. Just two great pitchers, great bats all around -- and that's including the Sox now that they've decided to wake up. Something has to give today ... weather .... bats .... pitchers ...

I'm just excited as a baseball nerd to watch all of it.

Gausman has actually struggled of late, but his road splits and night game splits are very solid.

Going to need to play a CLEAN game. can't have any errors or mistakes. wind and those bats will bite you if you don't take advantage of the small stuff ... clean defense, hitting cutoff men, sac hits, sac flys, understanding the situations. also very importan for cease to get ahead in the count. this is not a game i want to see sousa in... or any of our bullpen really. cease needs to be aggressive, no nibbling and get 6-7ip. I don't care if it's 4er, just needs to get late in game.

opposite side sox bats need to be patient, same thing. lets get to their bullpen. the quicker gausman gets the hook the better for the sox.

prediction -- whoever forces the bullpen to come in first wins.

    go go sox.

Sure Josh Harrison deserves to be released, but he had a good batting practice today, so let's send down Mendick and leave Moncada unavailable the next 3 days.

    haha.

also, like, why say that part out loud?  seems so bizarre to be 2-3 hours before the game, let harrison get there, get dressed, etc. and then cut him.

or mendick, or haesley... get dressed, and then MINORS!

i forget the rule this year, if we send down mendick or haesley (im not gonna bother to look up his spelling) and then put moncada on IL can we bring them back up or is there that 10 day rule?

  13. 2 hours ago, hankchifan said:

No way you send Mendick down. He has been  one of our hottest hitters and playing great defense.  Put him at 2 nd and get rid of Harrison.

It's just not that simple though. In a vacuum you may be able to say that. But in this case Harrison has had a few good weeks now, seems to be liked in the clubhouse, can play a few positions, is a veteran and you paid him $5mm. Mendick can easily be shifted to AAA with his options. I think even without a Moncada injury they'd likely choose sending down Mendick (who ... if we all remember has never had sustained success up in the majors ... he's done this hot start thing a few times and then been pretty brutal).

    Most likely to least likely:

    Moncada IL

    Mendick down

    Leury IL

    Harrison cut

  14. Ya, agree with above. roster size changes today. going to need to update on anderson, eloy ... moncada ...

would think Yoan to IL makes the most sense since it allows another fun week of leury, harrison and mendick to make their case!

If you are going to bench a RHP against RHP the logical choice to sit the most is Pollock. He's hot right now but maybe he won't be by the time we get Eloy back. Plus he's been a part time player for the Dodgers the last 3 years and he's done well in that time.

Vaughn has improved greatly against RHP and should be in the lineup 90% of the time . Robert still needs as many reps as possible against all pitching. Burger is murdering lefties and not so much righties so he could sit against righties but he's still a potent HR threat against RHP he may match up with well.

Hahn does need to make a trade or 2 to bring in some LHH . He screwed it up this off season probably because there's not a lot of LHH who actually fit the bill in the positions of need which means somebody like Eloy would have to be moved when their trade value is down. It's been impossible to count on him for anything.

Who would've thought Joc Pederson would be way more valuable to the Giants than Eloy is for the White Sox ?

I'd trade Eloy for Bryan Reynolds and the Sox would have to throw in more to get Reynolds.Unfortunately Reynolds arm is the weakest part of his game.

Other names , Cedric Mullins ,Anthony Santander, Ian Happ, Daulton Varsho (who I wanted in the off season but is likely to become a permanent fixture in the AZ . OF because) 34 yr. old David Peralta is a FA next yr. He would probably be fairly cheap to acquire but he never plays RF. Don't think he has much of an arm now from multiple surgeries on throwing shoulder.

Trent Grisham having a terrible year so far but a damn good defensive player. Maybe the Padres part with him.

Jesus Sanchez (Marlins) big physical tools undermined by his approach but big time power potential.

Taylor Trammel (Sea) Nice OBP and defense. Power not so much.

Odubel Herrera Plays CF & LF way more than RF. FA in 2023 might be an option. Having a nice yr for Phillies so far.

Robbie Grossman makes a lot of sense. Believe he's on the second and final year of his deal with Tigers. LHB, having a terrible year, but also had a strong year last year and is a great OBP guy which would slot in very well into that 4OF spot. Can play some D, steal some bases. Would cost almost nothing to acquire.

Also anybody who's going to complain he has been terrible this year needs to remember what Joc, Soler, and Rosario were doing last year before the Braves acquired them.

    TLR is a great manager

He's certainly built a nice track record. There's always something to learn from another individual. Good to have different perspectives, age groups and backgrounds across the clubhouse

  18. SWEEEEEEEEPPPPPP.

    KEEP THAT LINE MOVING.

Great effort by the boys. Like the piggy back, also should allow flexibility if needed for one of those guys to step in on their bullpen day and pitch 2-3 innings if need be.

Harrison batting .318 in June... making that decision Monday on him/Mendick tougher. Maybe a fake Leury injury?? Who knows. But glad it's at least a decision that takes pause. 2 weeks ago Harrison was dead in the water.

Let's cool the jets on "if they keep winning". They took 2 out of 3 from the Tigers, the 30th ranked team in total runs scored! Prior to that, they lost 2 of 3 from the Rangers and 2 of 3 from the Dodgers. Plus the Sox still have a ton of injuries and there is no guarantee this team will ever be 100 percent healthy. Although we all hope and pray for that, the track record doesn't give us any hope!

If this season gets uglier and we miss the playoffs, I assure you TLR does not return. Even the POS Reinsdorf won't be able to protect his buddy from the national and local screaming for his termination.

Positive thread sir. There's every single other thread for negativity. Thank you for your passion though! No buzz off to every other thread.

  20. My take is going to differ from most here.

I think there's value in Scout Seats if you get them for the right price. When the Sox sucked and I lived in the city, I'd just wait 2-3 hours before game time, and grab them for $100-150 a ticket. Now the lowest prices seem to be around $225 for mid-week games and like $275 for weekends. Lot tougher to justify that way. That said, if you want to be close to the action and batting circles you're probably paying $100-125 for the first 5 rows anyways. Scout Seats tend to iclude a parking pass, so factor that in too. Now the kicker turns into how much of a glutton do you wanna be? If it's a Saturday game and you're down to drink and eat until you feel like a fat pig? Then there's value, because it's all you can drink ... and if you're gonna throw back 8 tito's and sodas? Or 8 Gumballheads? Plus all the food ...? it really isn't that bad. if you were to be a pig and do that at regular seats you could easily rack up a $150-200 food bill. As I've gotten older though I don't find the patio pregame, scout seats, all you can eat experience to be as fun, but if you do? Then you can easily justify the ticket price.

I actually prefer to go to like 3-4 games a year in scout seats rather than 8-10 games in my diamond box seats.

But as some people have alluded to, the quality continues to go down hill. for a while there they were doing some really nice options of healthier foods, lighter foods, well-made ... now I find the staidum club, guaranteed rate club and scout seats to have just slightly better than the rest of the ballpark food.

It is great to have no line to bathrooms and nice bathrooms, but the walk to get there is probably 3-5 minutes. so really not saving a ton of time. as people mentioned you're tipping (or should) tip the inside and outside people which is another $20. Seats are wide and padded which is cool. if there's a giveaway you get it no matter what, and at least when they were bad you'd get more than one ... i think one game i walked away with like 6 t-shirts.

Overall I'd recommend if you can grab a seat for $200-250 all-in and you come thirsty/hungry.
