Eric Schneiderman, New York’s attorney general, has long been a liberal Democratic champion of women’s rights, and recently he has become an outspoken figure in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment. As New York State’s highest-ranking law-enforcement officer, Schneiderman, who is sixty-three, has used his authority to take legal action against the disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, and to demand greater compensation for the victims of Weinstein’s alleged sexual crimes. Last month, when the Times and this magazine were awarded a joint Pulitzer Prize for coverage of sexual harassment, Schneiderman issued a congratulatory tweet, praising “the brave women and men who spoke up about the sexual harassment they had endured at the hands of powerful men.” Without these women, he noted, “there would not be the critical national reckoning under way.”

Now Schneiderman is facing a reckoning of his own. As his prominence as a voice against sexual misconduct has risen, so, too, has the distress of four women with whom he has had romantic relationships or encounters. They accuse Schneiderman of having subjected them to nonconsensual physical violence. All have been reluctant to speak out, fearing reprisal. But two of the women, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, have talked to The New Yorker on the record, because they feel that doing so could protect other women. They allege that he repeatedly hit them, often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent. Manning Barish and Selvaratnam categorize the abuse he inflicted on them as “assault.” They did not report their allegations to the police at the time, but both say that they eventually sought medical attention after having been slapped hard across the ear and face, and also choked. Selvaratnam says that Schneiderman warned her he could have her followed and her phones tapped, and both say that he threatened to kill them if they broke up with him. (Schneiderman’s spokesperson said that he “never made any of these threats.”)

A third former romantic partner of Schneiderman’s told Manning Barish and Selvaratnam that he also repeatedly subjected her to nonconsensual physical violence, but she told them that she is too frightened of him to come forward. (The New Yorker has independently vetted the accounts that they gave of her allegations.) A fourth woman, an attorney who has held prominent positions in the New York legal community, says that Schneiderman made an advance toward her; when she rebuffed him, he slapped her across the face with such force that it left a mark that lingered the next day. She recalls screaming in surprise and pain, and beginning to cry, and says that she felt frightened. She has asked to remain unidentified, but shared a photograph of the injury with The New Yorker.

In a statement, Schneiderman said, “In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”

To the attorneys on here ... Cosby will be sentenced in July. What do you think his sentence will be? Remember he is old. He is not healthy. Now this is for one case, but will the judge pull an O.J./Vegas verdict and nail him for all the other alleged Cosby crimes that could not be tried? I personally think he will get a year in a country club jail/facility.

The judge pretty much has to give him jail time, lest the judge be attacked from all sides. However, the judge if the judge goes by her/his sworn oath has to sentence him for ONE CASE. In other words, probation could be possible IMO. Remember this is an old guy, not some young guy. His life is basically over. However, his crimes are heinous. This is a tough call, folks. I think all things considered, he gets a year in jail. If I'm out of line, sorry. I would not be against him getting 10 years no chance of probation. I'm just at a loss for words on this one. I submit to the attorneys on here to give us a Cosby sentence. Thank u.

this is absolutely ridiculous greg.   He goes to jail for a long fucking time, and if he dies in prison so be it.   he was DRUGGING AND RAPING women and using his influence to hush it up.   Who cares how old he is?   Should a murderer get one year if they catch him when he is 80 years old?   If your child was involved in any of this would you be like "well he is old, so give him only a year"?   And lets not pretend like this happened 40 years ago and was a one off.   he was doing this for a long damn time

Why are you acting so mean in response to my question? I said I had no problem with 10 years. I'm pointing out reasons I feel he'll get a year in a posh prison. Remember this is about one case. The other cases are not included. So I was wondering if he'd get OJ'ed. The Vegas sentence made up for the LA acquittal. I'm not for Cosby the creep. Just asking what he's gonna get.

I’m acting mean because you are sympathizing with this guy, pointing out he isn’t old and isn’t in good health.  Who gives a shit?  You mention it multiple times like it’s supposed to make a a difference.  Lock him up and throw away the key

“Women have contacted me in recent days to say that they did not feel that they could fully speak candidly to the NBC lawyers, and others have contacted me to say that they didn’t feel that they were properly interviewed,” Vester said to CNN’s Alisyn Camerota.

The investigation turned up no structural problems contributing to a culture of sexual misconduct. It was triggered after former Today host Matt Lauer was fired for sexual harassment last fall.

I think it's a couple of things.  First, people who spoke out about being harassed by CK have been harassed for speaking out (http://www.vulture.com/2018/05/louis-c-k-put-me-in-a-lose-lose-situation.html).  It's an odd world when the harasser is getting to make a "comeback" while the whistleblowers continue to suffer for speaking out.

Second, while CK has admitted to harassing women, he hasn't really apologized for it.  The guy used his power over the years to sexually harass women.  If that means that he loses his platform for awhile, then it stands to reason that he needs to do something to really get that platform back.

It's honestly a tough issue for me regarding how you deal with the careers of people like CK.  He shouldn't get a lifetime ban from comedy, obviously.  But CK getting his platform back needs to be more nuanced than "I stayed out of the limelight and lost some deals over the last 9 months, and now I'm back."
