White Sox have shown interest in Machado

The downside is it locks you into a roster that isnt good enough and prevents you from dealing either Abreu or Garcia possibly both. There is also the non-zero chance Machado gets injured or has another down year. There is risk plenty.

Of course there is upside too but all this is predicated on the Orioles accepting a bad offer. Why woudn't they keep him. Why wouldn't they see where they are at the deadline and either move him for prospects or take the pick?

They are already locked in. Other then Britton not much else on their roster has significant value.

Why?

LATEST: The #Orioles want to trade Manny Machado and will only not occur if Peter Angelos vetoes it. They won't trade directly with the Yankees and want confidence he doesn't end up on-traded there. Risky, and potentially messy. O's fans understandably nervous.

So, they want top prospects, won't let teams be given a 72 hour window to talk contract extension, and want teams not to trade him to the Yankees.

Price goes down if it were me.

Really seems like Cards are in good shape

Why do the O's care if he ends up there for one season, a season in which O's will be bad if they trade him?

Because they play them 18 or 19 times. It is very understandable. If the White Sox word isn't good enough, then it won't happen. Probably won't happen anyway. There has to be at least one top guy in the package or it makes no sense for Baltimore.

Many seem to have not read the article as Nightengale said there's no chance the Sox would actually give Manny a huge contract

And then he completely contradicts himself in the next sentence.

Oh, sure, they’d love to have Machado for the next 10 years, and would have exclusive negotiating rights next season, but the chance of them dishing out at least $350 million for one player is about the same as the White Sox hosting a ring ceremony party for the Cubs.

Simply, the White Sox say, they would love to have Machado to help make them a better team, giving them a chance to sign him. If they are out of the race by the trade deadline, and Machado isn’t interested in signing an extension, they could then trade him and try to recoup their investment.

Nightingale is a PR shill at this point. I don't know what the angle is on this whole thing, but to me, this isn't real until someone with a better rep says it is.

Nightengale is losing what little credibility he had. Seemingly every other hour, he comes out with a new report that contradicts his previous one.

From what I understand, not including Nightengale, it's between us and the Cardinals (with Philadelphia as a long shot), we didn't offer Kopech or anyone of his caliber, and Machado could very well be traded in the next 24 hours.

If you were trying to get the Cardinals to add to their offer, you would do exactly what the Orioles did the last 24 hours in terms of leaks

It makes zero sense for the White Sox if they don't plan to sign him. If the White Sox are truly interested trading for him, I don't buy that part. Even flipping him is a risk. What if he gets hurt or has a slow start?

So if he goes to the Sox, there should be no issue in dealing him there later on in the summer. You can justify it as "we traded for him and fully intended on extending him. Negotiations are far apart so we are making him available" in July completely avoiding the 18-19 games.

It makes sense if the Yankees went to Hahn and said "We want Machado but Orioles wont deal with us. Well give you A,B,C for him" and Hahn is now trying to get Machado cheaper than A,B,C.

Hahn’s ability to do deals with other teams would be greatly tarnished if he did something like that. No way he’d ever do something so shady.

Machado for Avi and/or Cease + org filler + promise we won't trade him to Yankees?

Screw the promise, no reason to lose a possible mid season trade partner

Won't trade him to Yankees before a certain date? Sure. I agree it would be s***ty if done immediately but there should be no issues if done at a later point.

Reading nightengale feed is like watching someone calling their own reflection in the mirror an idiot.

It's really a no win situation if he comes here next year without an extension. If he plays incredible, then he possibly prices himself even more out of Sox plans. If he struggles on a losing team, then he might want to go to a different organization

FWIW, he had a slow start last year and at the deadline his OPS was only .751. It was .829 over the final 2 months.

I think what Nightengale is saying now is probably truth as he mentioned earlier the Sox officials were surprised they had the best offer.

The thing is there isn't going to be an extension. I am pretty sure Baltimore knows that or they would be negotiating with him. Probably one reason they won't grant a 72 hour window, even though that would virtually guarantee he wouldn't be traded to the Yankees, is because they know it is pointless.
