Roughly what the Yankees gave up for Stanton should be the market to give someone $300 million.

Not at all. Marlins were handcuffed on that deal. All about getting rid of his contract and it was limited to 4 teams, and only 3 of those teams had interest.

I meant as in a premier hitter. I dont think hes proven that yet. Most everyone to get the money he will has hit on another level compared to him. Obviously his contract will become closer and closer to the norm for stars as the years go by, but man it just seems like everyon e is willing to fork over one of the biggest contracts in sports history no questions asked.

A free agent of his caliber at his age is rare. Look at what teams were offering Heyward because he was a 26-year old free agent. And Heyward was nowhere near the hitter Machado has been.

Nothing to see here. Hahn is just seeing what Machado wants on the open market.... or is he? Rick Hahn is a madman and has unpredictably huge stones when it comes to these things. He knows the onjective.

I think this is Kenny.

You never know these days. Both are bold, kind of tricky to pinpoint what is really true and what isn’t. This really should be the move we make a year from now, not at this point in time, unless he came at a stupidly low price, which he will not.

Why do people keeping throwing out Fulmers name like he is a tradeable asset? He has been terrible for over a year and has no value in a trade other than as a throw in.

The cost will at least be one of Giolito/Lopez/Kopech plus one of Dunning/Hansen/Cease.

Acquiring Machado gets you a guaranteed comp pick and a season long negotiating window. Maybe after a season of playing with Moncada up the middle everyday he considers staying to be part of the future.

After his debut, Fulmer was quite good in the Majors last year.

His peripherals in the bigs weren't that good, but I'll take him having some confidence for next year over anything.

But you wouldn't trade him and Dunning for Machado with an extension. Everything you're saying adds up.

I think the best thing the White Sox can do is just chill. Let the madness happen that is the Winter Meetings. Let the young guys develop and take their lumps this year. They need to figure out what prospects will pan out and where they will fit in the rotation and diamond. It is not as exciting as making the big move but it needs to happen. Look at the Yankees last winter meetings. They sat it out and waited for their young guys to develop.

I agree but the White Sox are not the Yankees. Certainly it made sense for NY and they have an entrenched fan base. So they might have taken a hit on attendance( even some advertising money) while they reloaded but their attendance numbers are still top 5 ish. The White Sox must be concerned on their numbers as the rebuild continues. Hopefully next year, the White Sox marketing can start to "advertise' the kids to get fans to start coming back and hope the advertisers do not wander North. But 2-3 years of struggling could set the Sox back especially if the Cubs continue as an attractive product.

Phils would seek negotiating window if they could forge deal w: O’s on machado. They love machado, he knows their execs (MacPhail drafted him for Balt) and they have $. But asked if MM, 1 year from free agency, would grant negotiating window, person involved said: “probably not”

So in theory would the deal depend on the team trading for Machado getting him to agree to an extension? That certainly would make things interesting if so

Sure, and what Robert got total, will be somewhere around $10 million a year short of what Machado will get.

That's fine, but doesn't change the fact that he was the hot commodity, the Sox were interested, and they won.

People using recent history as a citation for why the White Sox won't be involved in free agency and give out huge contracts are looking at a different time frame. I have absolutely no doubt that the Sox will be involved and will pony up to get their guy.

That's like saying your friend covered the table's bill at Chili's, so he definitely would do the same at Gibson's. The Sox spending $50 million on a very young international FA isn't all that comparable to a veteran FA who will cost $300+ million.

How many teams have spent $300 million on a free agent?

This, the Sox have never done it, so it won't happen has blown up a couple of times in poster's faces the last few years. There is a reason Olney mentioned them yesterday, and it wasn't because they are going to drain their farm system for a season of Machado.

If they aren't going to be players in free agency next year, and they don't realize how much it will cost, this rebuild will be all for naught. There is no guarantee they end up with Machado, but there is a reason they are showing interest in him now.

Which makes the Machado and Harper free agencies unprecedented

I feel with ARod's deals and Giancarlo's deal, that these aren't that unprecedented. The free agency period itself will be unprecedented, but the contracts themselves really won't be.
