It's not as good of an experience as you think. Worse if there's a "Dynasty" from another team in that timeframe. Even worse if that "Dynasty" is a bunch of proven cheaters who only were able to achieve their success by cheating.

No I'd still rather have the competitive seasons year after year like the Sox used to in the 2000s. It's better than we've seen in this decade.

They said they will re-examine in 3 weeks. I know nothing about ligaments, but he had a grade 1 in Japan. Now grade 2 with not a real heavy workload. Seems to me that ligament is going to pop eventually.

Thats more like it. A grade 2 should heal in 3-6 weeks

The more detailed versions make it sound a lot more serious than you do here pt, including lists of guys like Matt Harvey who had TJS after a grade 2 sprain.

They are correct where the definition of a grade 2 is a partial tear. Some pitchers do need surgery even with a partial tear. Most dont. The key is how stable the joint is after the healing period usually the 3-6 weeks. They will know at that time whether he will need to replace it.

Pedro Gomez reporting Ohtani will need TJ, and is out until 2020.

They obviously were under reporting the injury if they already know he needs UCL after a week. They didnt even wait the normal healing period to see if it tightens up.

This makes more sense. If it's truly a grade 2 as reported, they will allow for some healing time usually 3-6 weeks before determining if he needs surgery. However, the previous injury will complicate the decision.

Didn't realise there was that much left on Miggy's contract. Sad to see this happen to such a great hitter though.

"Between the herniated disks, last month’s hamstring strain and a minor groin strain earlier in the 2017 season, the long-durable Cabrera — he averaged 155 games per year from 2004-16 — has begun to show increasing signs of wear and tear. For a player who’ll turn 36 next April and is still owed an otherworldly $162MM from 2019-23 — his age-36 through age-40 seasons — that sudden decrease in durability and productivity is alarming. It’s not clear if the Tigers have insurance on Cabrera’s contract, though typically a team will take out a policy on a contract of this magnitude, in which case the Tigers could stand to be reimbursed for at least a portion of Cabrera’s $30MM salary in 2018."

Post PED era taking its toll on older players.

Am I wrong in understanding that this is an injury that very likely could be linked to steroid usage?

You are correct. Many of the classic PEDs weaken the tendon due to its effect on the collagen and its disproportionate increase in the muscle's ability to generate tension compared to the tendon. So athletes with multiple severe tendon injuries raise a few eyebrows.
