No love for Henzman?

I'm not a big believer in him as a major leaguer. I think his profile is the type that will dominate in A-ball, then hit a wall around AA. That said, he's been crushing it and I would be happy to be proven wrong.

It’s pick 30 but why Weaver over Delgado?

I like Delgado but he's a little high risk-high reward. I suppose so are guys like Curbelo and Sosa, but they're more advanced than Lency at this stage so I wanted to give a "safer" pick a spot. Sure, Weaver isn't exactly a low risk guy, but the dude can flat out run and I believe in his hit tool more than most. Of course this opinion is based on limited youtube scouting and draft reports so take it with a grain of salt

Was wondering the same thing.

Also McClure at 19 is interesting.

The injury obviously doesn't help him out but he was my favorite minor league pitching prospect aside from the obvious Kopech/Cease/Hansen/Dunning. But a huge, 6'7 arm who induces ground balls like crazy and rarely allows home runs is very intriguing to me. I'm sure his HR rate will increase as he advances, but I like his potential. Could see him as a good reliever too

Two trends I'm seeing consistently that make no sense to me, especially in concert with the other:

1) Alec Hansen dropped 4 spots essentially due to injury.

2) Jake Burger ahead of Seby Zavala despite progress by Zavala and Burger being injured.

Can someone explain? I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand the thought process. To me, Burger missing this year in High A puts him behind the development curve, where Hansen is IMO still basically on track. Neither player has done much of anything this year, but Burger essentially maintains his position (he was around 11 on preseason lists, and around 11 on every list on here) while Hansen drops 4 spots (Interestingly 8th on every list).

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me:

  • Collins hitting respectably greatly increases his value to me. I'm a believer he sticks at catcher. I think his potential is back to where it was when the Sox drafted him.
  • I'm not overly high on Zavala. I view him as an offensive-first backup at the major league level. I know there are some that say he has improved his defense, but there are still reports out there (leading into this season) that say otherwise. I'm a fan and rooting for him to succeed, I just don't think he's going to be as productive as some other people think he will be once he makes the majors.
  • I don't view Burger as having a high ceiling, but I think he will be a MLB starter even if it is ultimately at 1B. I think his hit tool is better than Zavala's. Regarding his injury in comparison to Hansen - it seems to me that Hansen's injury could cause a more severe derailment in his development than Burger's. If this persists and forces Hansen's ability to pitch his value is greatly diminished. Burger has no speed to lose, and if he gets shifted to 1B the bat still plays IMO.
  • Hansen worries me a little with the arm issue he had. I feel like most of the other top prospects, especially Cease and Dunning, have take a big step this year. Perhaps that is unfair for Hansen's position on my list, but he technically hasn't developed any further than last year at this time. If Hansen repeats last season for the rest of '18, he'll be back up at the top for me.

Our pitching depth is really amazing.  There were a ton of guys that didn’t make the cut on my list that easily could have made those last five slots or so.  The big names missing in the upper minors would be Puckett, Clarkin, & Guerrero.  Henzman could have easily made a case for a spot & Battenfield’s results at least make him someone to watch.  Plus we just drafted a ton of interesting college arms and I expect a few of them to shoot up the rankings next year.  None of these guys have TOR upside, but we should hopefully have a pipeline of back-end options for the foreseeable future.

I think Pilkington is going to explode in the Sox system personally. Sox will clean up his mechanics and he is going to shove.

That would be major...Not really a TOR guy like many in our system but definitely has starter potential, 3-4 type

Completely agree. Kid was such an enigma in college as I said back in the draft thread, but he has alot of talent.

For me, Hansen was at 8 rather than 4 because

1. I've always liked Cease better, and I thought Cease was great last year but was basically pitching without a defense behind him, causing him to have to pitch for strikeouts and preventing him from going deeper into games

2. Madrigal slotted above him but that's not Hansen "dropping", more just Madrigal being added

3. Just like with Cease, I've always loved Collins

4. I ranked Dunning higher just because there's a higher chance he'll be a solid MLB pitcher (lower ceiling than Hansen, but less risk). Maybe the injury did affect my ranking there. But of course now Dunning is injured too.

I had almost forgotten about Cordell.  When he went out at the end of April, the prognosis was eight weeks.  We are now almost exactly two months later, so I wonder what is going on with him?  If his window falls too much futher back, it will be gone with the amount of player flying through the system.

The Top 30 was very hard this time which is a good thing. We could almost go to 40 players pretty easily.

1. Eloy Jimenez OF

2. Michael Kopech RHP

3. Luis Robert OF

4. Nick Madrigal SS

5. Alec Hansen RHP

6. Zack Collins C

7. Dylan Cease RHP

8. Dane Dunning RHP

9. Micker Adolfo OF

10. Luis Alexander Basabe OF

11. Blake Rutherford OF

12. Steele Walker OF

13. Luis Gonzalez OF

14. Jake Burger 3B

15. Jordan Stephens RHP

16. Zack Burdi RHP

17. Seby Zavala C

18. Spencer Adams RHP

19. Gavin Sheets 1B

20. Konnor Pilkington LHP

21. Ian Hamilton RHP

22. Luis Curbelo SS

23. Tyler Johnson RHP

24. Lenyn Sosa RHP

25. Ryan Cordell OF

26. AJ Puckett RHP

27. Thyago Vieira RHP

28. Jonathan Stiever RHP

29. Laz Rivera SS

30. Bernardo Flores LHP

Just Missed: Joel Booker, Alex Call, Danny Mendick, Ian Clarkin, Jose Ruiz, Lincoln Henzman, Lency Delgado, Luis Mieses, Kade McClure, Ti'Quan Forbes

I was surprised to see so much love for Lency Delgado this early. He's super young and in the AZL. He wasn't really a 4th round draft prospect though even though that's where the Sox took him. He's definitely a guy to watch for sure though. As far as the draft picks are concerned, they the players went in the rounds that their talent actually justifies it would have looked something like this for Sox: 1. Madrigal 2. Walker 3. Pilkington 4. Stiever 5. Davis Martin 6. Jason Bilous RHP 7. Isaiah Carranza RHP 8. Lency Delgado SS 9. Ty Greene C Cal Berkley 10. Cabera Weaver.
