GFM always seems to provoke emotional arguments...over funeral expenses, funeral expenses for people who died in reckless fashion, homeless vets who receive “too much generosity that should be allocated more evenly,” then you have FBI’ers like McCabe and Strozk earning $500,000 and rising for anti-Trump reasons.

The biggest scam of all was $7.3 million going to Jill Stein for an election recount which obviously hasn’t occurred.

Kind of like the HSA. Many companies as going to those instead of insurance. The hospitals will often discount the bills up to 60% for cash. My wife who works for an insurance company isn't offered traditional insurance. The company offers an HSA and seeds it with 5000. Catastrophic does come with it.

Maybe that's the why to do universal health insurance. Everyone who signs up gets an HSA  of a certain amount. Then they can add as they want.

I've always believed that universal health care provides a basic health care package.  It helps prevents the bankruptcy cases and over usage of emergency rooms, etc.  But if you want better healthcare, lower deductibles, etc then you pay for a private or public plan that sits on top of your basic plan, like a tiered system or something.

Why have deductibles at all?

I think most countries allow private supplemental plans for concierge/luxury service, but almost any procedure or treatment anyone would ever need is covered.

Maybe your total bill for child birth is $50 including a few weeks in NICU. Here, it could be financially devastating even with insurance.

I definitely don't have all the details worked out, it's just an idea of having a tiered system.  I don't have the numbers but I would imagine it would be less of a price shock to Americans if we continue to use a deductible type system (or some alternative).

If we cap out of pocket expenses to a couple thousand per person like most insurance plans then we are getting to such a better spot.  Is it everything I would want to see?  No, but it's huge progress.

http://www.newser.com/story/263795/campaign-to-help-philly-homeless-man-gets-nasty.html

Bobbitt wonders how McClure, a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, paid for the new BMW she drives and for vacations to California, Florida, and Las Vegas, as well as a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. He also questions how much D’Amico, a carpenter, spent gambling.

In an interview last week, the couple said they used their own money to buy the BMW and to pay for vacations. D’Amico said he spent $500 of the GoFundMe money to gamble because he did not have his SugarHouse Casino card one night, but he said he quickly repaid it with his winnings.

As for Bobbitt, the couple said he once burned through $25,000 they gave him in less than two weeks. They said he stole from them and pawned some of their possessions for cash to feed his drug habit, allegations he denies.

With no formal accounting of the money and no financial statements, it is unclear how much is left. What is clear is that Bobbitt has little to show for it.

He insists that the couple didn’t shell out anywhere near the $200,000 they say they spent on his care. He said McClure and D’Amico controlled most of the spending and limited how much they gave him to live on. He said he had no direct access to the money donors contributed.

GoFundMe kept $30,000 of the money. No trust was ever set up. McClure and D’Amico said the rest is in a savings account. They declined to produce any financial statements for the newspaper.

They sold the camper for $10,000 and kicked him off their property where Bobbitt had parked it while living in it. He’s homeless again.

“Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” said D’Amico,

Bobbitt is currently living under a bridge and panhandling.

GFM has gone off the rails...you have this case, all the politicians asking for legal defense funds, Roger Stone/Strozk/McCabe...one even in the UK trying to fend off sexual harassment charges.

What next, the Catholic Church soliciting for money to settle all the PA cases?

I've read a little bit about this story and there are a whole lot of facts still missing. Apparently they've given him quite a bit of the money already and bought him a trailer to live in but somehow he's lost it all already. The guy even admitted that he's still addicted to drugs. So I'm not sure what good handing him another $200,000 will do.

Well, the girl has a new BMW despite being an admin assistant.  They’ve taken at least four long distance vacations during the last 6 months.  The guy borrowed money from the funds to pay for gambling, then supposedly paid it back.

Lots of people believe it was a set up from the beginning.

You do two things here...one is not buying a camper and putting him in the backyard without even a shower.  Set up as a trust with a bank/law firm, but they had no right to control the money once it started getting to be more money than they’d ever dreamed of raising.  Buy or rent him a house.  Get him set up through the VA or private clinic with drug/alcohol abuse counseling.   They bought him a 1999 Ranger and it quickly stopped running...apparently they sold that and the camper.

Only heard that he received $25,000...which went to pay off debts, to his family, to drugs (the allegation of the couple, but with no evidence to back it up, which also sounds like the perfect way to have an excuse not to disburse the funds.)

$400000 - $30000 off the top to GFM.  370,000 - 50000 (camper, 1999 Ranger, $25000 actually put in his hands).  No taxes even considered at this point.  That leaves $200,000 unaccounted for, which the forensic accountants will quickly determine was spent by the couple (car, vacations, gambling.)

Just a sadder version of the Duncan Hunter story in terms of greed and access to money/power/fame corrupting.
