Yeah I think, as chisoxfn pointed out, sox pitch will definitely include how they plan to market a harper or machado, and that effort will far surpass anything they've done since I've been alive.

But baseball has just been impossible to create stars in. Freakin david ross has been baseballs biggest success story recently to be honest, though Aaron Judge certainly had his moments.

David Ross?

Are we seriously defining stars by which guys perform in dancing competitions post retirement?

No, I'm defining them by how well they are recognized and liked to casual audiences.

Think of what Stanton went through in NY. He got booed plenty and worse for god knows what reason besides that he got off to a slow start and K'd a lot. Machado will be fair game for every rabid a-hole and there are many many of them. Machado will be vilified , crucified and ostracized in NY.

ARoid got all that for 10 years, got something like $400 million for the privilege, and now he's an MLB analyst.

Buster Olney just retweeted some baseball espn podcast saying they'd be stunned if Harper isn't a philly.

East coast stars definitely aligning behind phillies and yankees being the winners (which is probably the correct odds).

That is not unique to NY. Do you really think if Machado got off to a slow start with the White Sox the fans would be understanding? It wouldn't be as brutal because there are about a quarter of the people in the stands. But he is going to get killed anywhere he goes if he starts out slowly, except maybe LA.

I think most think it's a lock the Phillies get one of these guys, so if Machado goes to NY, the Sox are back to scrap heap. I would think their biggest competition would be the Nats, as they have always been one of Boras' fall back teams. Harper loved it there, and they have a lot to lose having him go elsewhere.

Well it's also that nobody would bother reporting on it if it was in chicago or san fran or la either.

It's not unique too NY it's just intensified by 100. NY is the baseball and media capital of the world. Every time I watch any show on MLB Network be it Hot Stove, MLB  Now , Baseball tonight or whatever their is always a story on the Yankees.Always. Then there's the NY based Christopher Russo show on MLB Network which also focuses a lot on the Yanks. The Sox are way down the list of teams who garner that kind of media spotlight. Sure it will happen in Chicago too but nowhere close to the extent that it will in NY.

Bah, we're going to hear that we're out of it at least 5 more times before either of them actually signs. At some point Bruce Levine will share that we're right in the mix with the strongest offer or something like that and we'll cover 20 pages of posts in about 30 minutes, then nothing will happen for another 3 days and we'll hear that they're both signing with the Yankees, then 3 more days will pass before anything official goes down.

I don't think that there is any question that failing in NYC is worse than failing anywhere else, except maybe Boston.  The Chicago press is a lot more in league with the teams for some reason.  Fans feed off of that to some extent.

It is widely known Machado would prefer playing for the Yankees. I don't really think it's a great sell, hey if you suck here, we're kind of incognito, so it won't be as brutal.

He was around before the whole a lot of the media explosion. Yes there was ESPN . But now there's MLB Network. Twitter and tons of social media. He also married J LO which helped who is  beloved from the Bronx .It's also closer to $300M than $400M if you are just counting salary about $317M, Arod was raised in Manhattan so maybe he just loved NY and just let it roll off his back like he did with the steroids controversy. He is certainly no worse for the wear. I'll give you that. Perhaps that will be the case for Machado too.

They aren't married and ARod is from Miami. With his contract, he didn't have many options. The first attempt was Boston, but the players association wouldn't approve the pay cut he would have had to take.

Not saying it's a selling point, He just better have his head on screwed on straight, if that's truly his dream to play for the Yankees and it  turns into a nightmare .

Does Harper have any kids? He was a LaRoche supporter, and loved the Drake. He said he wanted the same for his kids. Might want to keep KW away from him.

No but he still has a brother in the Nats system,Bryan Harper. He is a 28 year old pitcher who had TJ surgery . Maybe Sox could get him ala Eloy's brother and Jordan Danks.Give the Nats a better prospect than his brother and Bryce is in the bag .  ;)
