Why did he ever agree to this?

Because it's safer than going to free agency as a 34-year old pitcher. Dude is not young.

Such a good deal. I love Carrasco. Not consistently great, but always feels like someone who could get especially hot at the right time.

Just to recap, this peavy poster posted:

-Harper hates philly

-Sox offering largest contract

And he wants to live and be a part of the city of Chicago.

If the Sox do love their chances at signing him, then perhaps we have some sort of framework that Bryce/Boras have already expressed some interest in. Maybe it's the Albert Belle top 3 paid player no matter what thing

I like this idea. I still think the Sox have less than a 5% chance to actually sign Harper or Machado. Maybe thinking outside of the box makes sense here. Ideas:

  • clause to make top 5-10 paid player in mlb, or top 3 OF in the league for a duration in the contract
  • deferred revenue over a time period
  • HEAVILY front-loaded contract to the tune of something silly like $60mm in year one when we likely won't compete - then like $30mm for years 2-5 with opt-out.
  • ownership/equity stake in the sox
  • attendance clause/escalator - I think Encarncion had one of these in Cleveland
  • other?

Hahn again had a chance to temper the enthusiasm for Sox fans when it comes to the big guys, and he absolutely didn’t.  That’s a positive sign if you want them to get Bryce/Manny.  Oh, and every time I see him remark about you can’t control when players are available, it makes me think Manny is their main target

That last quote from Hahn is awfully cryptic. Not going to try and get mine or anyone elses hopes up, but it seems to me he wouldn't really say that unless he was told by another party that that was the case.

Two main reasons why I feel that way:

-Hahn has said he’d like to acquire a premium 3B in coming years

-We know they liked Manny last offseason

This is exactly what I have spent all winter saying.  Shoot for a whale, if that doesn't happen, don't waste your time on players who won't be on the next playoff team.

Positionally he makes the most sense.  I just don't know about him as a team leader.....

I think Harper is their guy because baseball aside Harper makes them a draw nationally in terms of marketing. Harper being the cover star of the MLB The Show 19 and playing on ESPN games in a White Sox uniform would help tremendously in gaining fans not just in Chicago.

I think Hahn said the right stuff today.

But that's typical. Hopefully he acts on it.
