Dunn was a dumb signing at the time or is this an act of revisionist history?

If signing Adam Dunn and then signing Adam LaRoche afterwards does not teach us a lesson then we will never learn. Adam Dunn and Adam LaRoche seemed like good signings at the time. They were not. Learn the lesson from this about how bad money spent at the DH spot can be, and stop wasting money at the DH spot when we can cover it decently and cheaply!

Sure, you can focus on the guys that didn’t work out and ignore a guy like Thome that made a huge impact.  I’m all for giving Palka another look next year, but let’s not pretend he’s a sure thing to provide decent production.  And if we were able to land a whale, I’d happily sign Nelson Cruz to one year deal as I’d expect him to be a significant upgrade.

I don't think Harper or Machado have any particular connection to this org that would suggest they are coming here. Corbin grew up a Yank fan so he actually would like to play there if given a good offer. The Sox might be players for the next tier of FAs or trade prospects. Somebody who wants to captain a rebuild might not see a lot of progress here either.

Lol...least surprising response ever.  I can’t believe there is an actual human being who thinks Daniel Palka will outproduce Nelson Cruz next year.

I think there's a reasonable chance, because former steroid abusers in their late 30s do have a habit of hitting cliffs or getting hurt. But even if Cruz doesn't drop off next year - Palka at DH and a $10 million reliever >> Cruz at DH.

I wish somebody on Soxtalk would write an essay on payroll and why fans care about it. It's not their money and all fans do is shell out their own money to support the team. Why does anybody care if the Sox have a 200 million dollar payroll someday? If teams released the monetary figures it'd be said all teams can afford 200 million dollar payrolls. Look at the projected sale prices for all these teams and the TV contract figures. My motto is: Spend, Jerry, spend. IMO from a fan perspective there is absolutely no upside to having a low payroll.

The same people that care about team payrolls care about Vegas casinos winning/losing money, and network TV ratings. It’ll always be a mystery.

Great post NCsoxfan. I never thought of it that way. I could give a bleep about Vegas casino profits. Let's beat em!!! p.s. Why is it I can play blackjack an hour and lose 150 bucks and can play roulette which is considered a chump's game and win 100 bucks in five minutes?

No, we aren’t arguing about it. A few people that don’t have a firm grasp of reality are discussing it, that’s about it.

Well who is going to write Greg an essay on why team payroll is important? 2 pages, single spaced.

I mean, even for the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Cubs...the days of payrolls well above the luxury tax threshold are a thing of the past.

The Yankees under George Steinbrenner were pretty much the only team in professional baseball where the unique concept of having payroll limitations didn't mean a thing.

Sounds like you're not very good at blackjack.

Not for you as much as for the people who actually will read this and learn something... NO one actually cares about the teams profit and loss in terms of how much money they lose or make.  They care about team payroll in terms of what is allows the team to add to the existing team.  Current and future payrolls are the #1 indicator of how much salary the team is going to be able to add to it at any point in time.  It tells if there is room to add a star, or if they are maxed out.  Literally no one outside of the board of directors and people who hold grudges over that kind of thing actually care how much profit the team makes.  They care about payroll simply in terms of what kind of team it is allowing the White Sox to put on to the field.  That's it.  Anything else is dishonest.

It supports my theory the Sox have bad luck with NL veteran talent.

Cruz has averaged 41 HRs per year and an OPS over .900 since the year he popped.
