The Sox just need to make the best offer if they are interested in Harper. Nothing cute. Offer highest AAV, most total, and opt out after 5 years. If Harper turns it down, Hahn can simply and factually state the Sox made the best offer and the player chose to play elsewhere.

The Sox have lots going for them that should be attractive to Harper. If he doesn't want to play for them, it almost doesn't matter what the offer is.

The Sox can't possibly fuck this up twice in one off-season, right?....Right?......RIGHT!?

If they ask "Is Pepsi okay?" in a restaurant, you say yes begrudgingly and forget about it 2 sips later.

False.  Pepsi (White Sox) is far superior when compared to Coke (Cubs). If fact. some people prefer the taste.    We could be in worse shape.  We be RC Cola (Marlins)  or Shasta (Rays)....Never would have thought I would use a pop metaphor for baseball.

RC Cola has so many titles in such a short time no wonder they are royalty.

I think the Sox chances here are way better than people want to admit and all the evidence is there for those willing to see it. Lots seem happy to just mire themselves in sadness and dread when it comes to the team even though this Harper situation seems very favorable to the Sox. Favorable enough that it adds a lot of context to letting Machado walk.

This is BS. None of us wanted to not sign Machado just so we could be sad, hence the anger from fans.

I don’t expect the Sox to push very hard for Harper or to sign him, which is very sad.

Afterall, just because you didn’t snag your primary target at a cheap price, why would you not jump at a chance to sign the other 26 year old stud that would change your organization completely on the field and off?

It will be mind-blowing if word comes out after Harper signs, that the Sox weren’t secretly pushing hard for Harper and talking to evil Scott Boras.  There are no better free agent options in the near future with Arenado off the board so Hahn no longer has a good excuse for hanging onto the salary instead of going hard for Harper.

It’s going to require a 3 or 4 year opt out...he won’t be tethered to the Sox five prime career years if the rebuild continues to founder on the rocks.

How do you guys rank Arenado, Harper and Machado?

There is a case to be made that Harper is 3/3 and Jerry will not break records for him if he should be valued lower than other two.

Arenado has never put up a 10 fWAR season, is older and has question marks about how high his offensive upside is outside of Coors.   Great player, but there are questions on how he would do in a huge market with the pressure to perform in the postseason ever year.  (Same can be said for Harper and Machado after this offseason as well.)

yeah. what the shame is before this Arenado setting the 32.5 price per year...10/315 may have been potentially available with an opt out plan since the offers have been underwhelming. Bryce might have told Boras I will take the 10-15 million less to play in Chicago over Philly (because no star wants to live there). Now the 33 AAV is the LOWEST Boras will ever accept.

I think players are pressured not to sign extensions in lieu of FA.

Machado, then Arenado, then Harper, as far as baseball talent goes. Harper, Machado, and then Arenado as far as cachet and putting this franchise on the map again.

Since you're trying to compare Arenado to Harper, it might be useful to look at Bryce's career stats, at Coors' Field: In 75 plate appearances (admittedly too small of a sample size):

AVG .387   OBP  .489   SLG  .627

Interesting, I just checked and Arenado has very similar numbers, hitting at Washington's Park.

Once Manny Machado signed with the Padres, it was believed the Phillies were the odds-on favorite to land Bryce Harper. As recently as Sunday, the word on the Phillies possibly landing Harper was optimism, but the Dodgers have entered the mix and we've been told not to forget about the Giants. Tuesday morning, MLB Network's Jon Heyman sent a handful of tweets saying others -- aside from the Phillies -- have offered over $300 million to Harper. He also pointed out that the Phillies have had their confidence in landing Harper dented, Harper is still seeking only long-term offers, and that perhaps the Dodgers were only granted a meeting with a short-term offer due to desired locale/stage.

A lot of that seems like informed speculation, but the biggest takeaway continues to be the Phillies have not closed down a deal yet. With the Dodgers jumping in the mix and Harper still not a Phillie, there has to be some serious doubt as to Harper's interest in playing in Philadelphia.

Did he really intend to create that impression, and why?

If they weren’t willing to go beyond $250 million guaranteed for Machado, why would they suddenly reverse course and guarantee $300-350 million for Harper?

We might have another option, Danielle Gibson after hitting for the 4 homer "cycle" for Univ. of Arkansas, haha...I think it even might have happened in the first 4-5 innings or consecutive innings, pretty cool feat at any level.

That money will be spent so relax. We will sign 5 players with WARS of 1 to 40 million dollar deals and other trash.

I was wondering if Hahn was including the $45 million he wasted this offseason into the $250 million intended for Machado that he promised the Sox would still spend.

Get Harper now, Rick.  No one wants Rendon next offseason as the consolation prize.
