Machado: Update - Manny, do you officially like us?

Would it make anyone feel better if someone who was signed by a team helped recruit another player who then actually signed with the same team ?

New second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who signed with the Twins on Dec. 6, knows Cruz from their one season together with Baltimore in 2014 — when Cruz led the American League with 40 home runs.

Schoop, like a savvy hitter, sold Cruz on joining the Twins, a team that went 78-84 last season but still has emerging talent. He also sold the Twins on Cruz, telling them about how the veteran slugger was a great influence on him and another young Orioles infielder, Manny Machado.

Sox can have a good offer and Manny takes less for the Yankees and it wouldn’t mean that the Sox were being cheap.  No one is saying he signs with Yankees for 15 mil a year.

It's possible Manny takes less to play for the Yankees but somehow I think their offer is going to top everyone's. The questions then would be what did the Sox offer? How much less? and were they given a chance to match or beat the Yankees offer in the negotiations.

So this Dick Clark guy may have just confused the “leaning toward the Yankees” report  to it actually going down? Perhaps that’s what Machados former teammate just reiterated back to Dick Clark? I think it might be a case of the ‘ol “leaning toward” and “actually signing” confusion. Because we all know, Machado first preference is NY, but let’s be real... it’s all about the $$$$.

No, sure seems like a teammate/friend told him Manny is signing with the Yankees next week.  Clark isn’t an idiot, as he even retweeted the story again in the last hour

Yeah he doubled down on it saying the rivalry between the yanks and red Sox are going to be even crazier now with Machado

Either way it sucks. If they didn’t make the high bid, that is so White Sox. If they offered $50 million more and he turned that down, that has to start the alarms as well.

Sox better have beaten the next highest offer by at least 20% or they aren't really serious about luring a top free agent to sign here.

That's just ridiculous. I agree that they should have the top offer, but by 20%? That's a lot.

Yeah. It would pretty much signal to never have hope in landing a huge free agent, unless one happens to be from the area and was a huge fan growing up.

Or have an incredibly inflated view of how players view the culture and prestige of the organization.

We've seen more than a few cases where there was no one close to within 20%. ARod, Zito, Hosmer immediately come to mind. If it takes an extra $20 million of bidding against ourselves to win one of these guys, f*** it that's what needs to happen.

If you think about it, it’s an extra 2-2.5 million a year. More than worth it for not being able to afford an incredible player like James McCann.

When the Bulls lost a coin flip and wound up with David Greenwood instead of Magic, that stung. But had they won that flip, they never would have been bad enough to draft Jordan

So maybe we will someday look back and think missing out on Manny opened a door to something better. But right now it feels like White Sox  business as usual.

That was the unlucky result of the James Shields' trade.
